Rhetorical questions deserve rhetorical answers.
There is nothing wrong with coal fired power generation as baseband power with gas turbine peaking.
It is much cheaper than renewables. Use of renewable energy makes every other connected generation source be operated intermittently which makes them less efficient and more costly since they aren't operated in the most mode - reducing efficiency, and at a lower capacity factor -which devastates ROI.
If renewable energy was not mandated renewable energy ROI would drop about 50% and the solar operators would close shop, there would be a wave of bankruptcies followed by new corporations buying and operating the assets. And there would be little new renewable installation - which is what should happen.
Renewables have about 1/3 the life of other generation assets and generate at about 1/3 of capacity - if the power grid is forced to buy their power at full price - and up to half of that if they aren't.

Wind assets availability drops 16% per decade.
In a free market they would seldom be competitive.
