UFOs and a Highly Classified Group

Within the UFO files of the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations that are held at the National Archives, there is a USAF document which is dated July 23, 1952. It briefly describes an event that occurred in Maryland, only twenty-four hours earlier. The document reads like this:
On 22 July 1952, Colonel Smith, Executive Officer, Directorate of Intelligence, USAF, advised that his office had just received a call from the above captioned individual, and that he was concerned over some object that had apparently fallen in a wooded area behind his home. According to Colonel Smith, Mr. [Deleted] resides on Layhill Road, Silver Springs, Maryland, and is employed by some Buick Company in the Silver Springs area. Colonel Smith further stated that Mr. [Deleted] reported this incident to the local police on 19 July 1952, the date the incident occurred, but having received no satisfaction decided to call the Air Force on 22 July 1952. I telephonically communicated the above information to Colonel White, District Commander, DO #4.

While the matter was not resolved, there is one issue that is worth noting when it comes to this particular account. That issue is the time-frame. July 1952 was also when a UFO “invasion” occurred in Washington, D.C. It was an affair that disturbed elements of the military and caught the deep attention of the CIA. UFOs were not just seen: they were also tracked on radar. It was a major development in the UFO phenomenon.

Keeping in mind the D.C. wave of July 1952, and the “object that had apparently fallen in a wooded area” in Maryland in the same time-frame, it’s worth noting the words of a Canadian engineer named Wilbert Smith. According to Smith – who shared the story with U.S. Navy Rear Admiral H.B. Knowles – he knew of the recovery of a piece of a flying saucer that had “…been shot from a small flying saucer near Washington in July [1952].” Not only that, Smith claimed possession of that same “piece.”

Smith said, in an interview with UFO researcher C.W. Fitch in November 1961:

I showed it to the Admiral. It was a piece of metal about twice the size of your thumb which had been loaned to me for a very short time by [the United States] Air Force. As a general thing they differ only in that they are much harder than our materials. In reality a matrix of magnesium orthosilicate. The matrix had great numbers – thousands – of 15-micron spheres scattered through it.
According to Smith, he handed the material over to an agency that he would only describe as being “much higher” than the Air Force. When asked if the agency might have been the CIA, Smith refused to say anything more, except that the debris was in “…the hands of a highly classified group.”

It’s important to note that much of what has been said about Smith has been distorted (see Paul Kimball’s on-target article “Oh Canada – Wilbert Smith & UFOs”), and particularly so certain issues relative to controversial tales of dead aliens and crashed UFOs. Kimball suggests that what Smith learned about crashed UFOs may actually have been disinformation, “aimed at the Soviets,” and possibly “designed to convince Stalin that the United States had access to advanced alien technology.”

Whatever the truth, it might be worth someone’s time to look further into the matter of the incident at Silver Springs, Maryland in July 1952, the UFO wave of the summer of 1952 in D.C., and the words of Smith.

Maybe, somewhere, there’s a connection. Maybe.

Perhaps the Wright-Patterson under ground installation, that is not suppose to exist.

I'd rather not take that on faith. Who has a copy of this document? Does it have a catalog number?

For me it's not a matter of faith but I do have some trust that the author of that article is writing credible information...I cannot answer your questions but perhaps Nick Redfern could if you emailed him...

Yes, well I do want to know more. Layhill Road is a modest bike ride from here.

Yeowch - it looks like Nick Redfern basically lifted that article from Ryan S. Wood's 2005 book MAJIC EYES ONLY: Earth's Encounters with Extraterrestrial Technology. Note the similarities:

I believe the group works internationally...but keeps most recovered items in either the US, Russia or China.
I had a thread on AU about all the reported crashes and another on lost and confiscated evidence.
There was one where a boy was given a strange flashlight by a UFO occupant and within minutes of the UFO leaving the military moved in and took the item from the boy. This occurred in the 1950s I believe.

Wow!

I have never understood Redfern's popularity, especially with people who should know better.

I like Brent Swancer's writing style more so than Redfern these days on MU and I'm quite surprised by the revelation Thomas posted, Redfern doesn't need to do that...

In the book Encounter in Rendlesham Forest, Nick Pope States his opinion that there is an informal working group of personnel on this topic within the U.S. Government and probably British as well. It has been around for a long time and all involved have official non-UFO positions and/or work in private industry. He also mentions that in both countries, the most effective way to keep something out of the reach of FOIA is to let a trusted contractor do it.

As far as the existence of a highly classified group that deals with UFOs and related matters, of course there has to be at least one. MJ12 was an obvious ruse that has unfortunately taken on a life of its own. Maybe the fictional MJ12 is a lot like the real group, or groups; maybe it's not like it at all. The decision to act on the recommendations of the Robertson Panel and such things has made a hopeless mess of trying to sort out the real stuff from the bullshit. Add in about a million volunteer obfuscators (truth seekers in their own minds, but in reality nuisances at best) and you have the present situation. I'm talking about the clueless people who believe whatever they hear, as long as it reinforces their established opinions.

The de-facto program of obscuring and denying has been going on so long, none of the original players are involved even if they may still be alive, so it's likely that no one anywhere knows anything like the whole story.

As Stanton Friedman and others have shown, the creation of the MJ-12 documents was extremely well done and whoever created them had ready access to original records which they could be checked against. They came to light at a time when AFOSI was particularly active in hoaxes and disinformation. So, I think the most likely story is that they are authentic USAF documents containing a mixture of fact and fiction, an idea well supported by both Friedman's painstaking research and the known (mis)behavior of AFOSI.

It has been a long time since I paid them any attention, but most of that stuff was apparently produced by that one guy with the eccentric date format that he thought the military used, and even the same typewriter. But yeah, he had help. He could spill the whole story in detail, and lots of people would insist on continuing to bleeve.

From Michael Salla:
New Investigation Shows Disputed MJ-12 Document Exposing Extraterrestrial Contact is Authentic
Excerpt:

In the newly released December edition of the MUFON Journal, the first detailed analysis of a leaked 47 page Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) document is published, offering the startling conclusion that it is authentic. The DIA document provides a broad overview of the official history of extraterrestrial contact with Earth, and credits the beginning of the modern UFO era with the Colorado Springs radio transmissions of Nikola Tesla, which led to extraterrestrials sending interstellar craft to investigate. This culminated in flying saucer crash incidents such as Roswell (1947) and Aztec (1948), and the establishment of formal diplomatic relations with a human looking group of extraterrestrials during the Eisenhower administration.

The MUFON Journal article’s author, Dr. Robert Wood, is the world’s foremost authenticator when it comes to the controversial Majestic Documents. These are leaked documents concerning the activities of Operation Majestic 12, which was formally set up in September 1947 to manage the UFO/extraterrestrial issue. A former aerospace engineer with McDonnell Douglas whose career spanned 43 years, Dr. Wood began his investigation and authentication of the Majestic Documents in 1995 with his son, Ryan.

In his article, which is titled “Forty-Seven Pages From the DIA: Why Should We Care?”, Dr. Wood gives a succinct overview of the 47 pages of the leaked DIA document:

Basically, there are five parts of intellectual content: (1) objective, history and organization of MJ-12; (2) details of the 1947 Roswell crash recovery; (3) details of the 1948 Aztec crash recovery; (4) condensed conversations with the Aztec EBE; and (5) issue of the national security or the risk of cultural upheaval, together with diplomatic and cultural exchanges during the 70s and 80s visiting some of EBE’s worlds.
