Dr.Kevin Knuth and aerial photos

Thought this might deserve a new thread.
So after actually trying for a while to take an iPhone photo of an overhead plane today I heard a hellish thunder an knew that a big military transport plane was overhead. If you can't take a pic of one of these big mofofs then good luck. I yanked that phone off my belt as quick as I could, finger fiddled it to open that photo app and here's what it actually looked like unedited:

Normally I'd edit and reduce these for size but not in this case for clarity. Here is a comparison shot I took standing in the same spot. 60-70n yards and I took the time to tap, hold & focus - and whistle to catch her attention.

C-5 Galaxy or a C-17 Globemaster. The latter is smaller and meant to land on slightly-less improved runways. Saw one at Oshkosh, WI years ago and when it hits the ground it hits full reverse and even from 3/4 of a mile away it'll suck your lunch back out through your nose.

I got an extended grand tour of a C-5 on a service call to a local ANG base and when you're sitting in the cockpit you're three stories in the air. It can fit six Greyhound buses inside at once. You really have to re-calibrate your Goddamned-Big-O-Mometer for that one.

Thing is, regardless of how prepared I was these frequently visible gigantic aircraft are hard to capture on an iPhone, and you can see the relative quality of Bambi from within easy range. I zoomed the shot and the pic wasn't all that great even at 100%. I've rung that orange cow bell many, many times and know how far away it is - 60, 70 yards tops.

So much for 21st Century commercial gadgetry.

And just now then out in the driveway I dropped the %$%%#@ iPhone and shattered the screen for my efforts!

F**K soup!!!!

I can't understand why the damn things are so expensive, do they really cost a lot to produce or are they price gouging?...:swearing:

or both?...:wht:

Apple has to realize that there is a certain segment of the population that would buy a brown turd if it had "Apple" stenciled on it. Thus they can name any price they choose.

They charge that much because they can and we pay. Can't really say why I started using them but have had a bunch of my own and at work and they are nice phones. Never broke one before. Had an S7 for a while and it just didn't appeal to me.

Back to the thread - I heard Ray Stanford say that he carried some special camera with him all the time just for immediate high quality shots. Heard him say a lot of things .... but that made sense.

I still have my 35mm camera with 200x zoom lens attachment that I bought when I was younger before the introduction of digital cameras, it was a damn good camera back in those times...I should set it up on my tripod and take some pictures with it and with my digital camera and compare the difference...Well I have to get the 35mm film developed first...(grumble) lol

It doesn't know it's old - still a good camera

I wonder how the C-5 compares to the old C-124? Those things are friggin' humongous too.

I can hear a c-5 (or c-17) out there right now but it's pouring rain. Never saw a c-124 but from the photos I'd say you would need an extra couple of doses of humongous to it to approach the size of a c-5. As I said, I was on a service call at an ANG base and the guys there were more than happy to show me around the whole thing. I think they said the two auxiliary power units they use while on the ground were also jet engines of the size that were used on dc-9s. The whole plane can squat down for loading. There's a passenger compartment upstairs the size found in a standard commercial plane. We crawled up into the root of the vertical stabilizer - looks like the Hindenburg in there - and popped the exterior hatch. You're definitely up in the air quite a ways. I think he also said that the cargo capacity was either six Greyhounds or two Abrams tanks. Damn. Don't mind seeing the tax dollars at work there.

I walked around inside a C-5 at an air show long ago. You could play basketball in there. It does mess with your sense of scale. I'd love to go poking around in the odd places like that.

Seems like I heard the C-5 was the loudest airplane in the world about 20 years ago. I believe it, after living near an old SAC base that was still active since a National Guard outfit was stationed there. One year there was a hurricane headed for a base in the Carolinas (I think) so they all loaded up and flew west. I figured they must have loaded up their families and cars for the trip, since I saw lots of Carolina plates in the 'hood. They hung around for a week or so and then blasted off for home. That was a noisy week.

Here is a photo I took a few months ago, with this thread in mind. Ever since I started carrying a phone with a camera, I thought I should take photos of planes in unusual circumstances for comparison to alleged UFO images. We all hear that there should be more great photos of weird shit since we are all toting cameras around with us everywhere we go. I've had a few sightings of weird shit, some of which still defy explanation. Between the time I got my first camera phone and the day I took this shot, I had missed some good opportunities as planes flew over. By the time I thought to get the phone out of my pocket, the "craft" were long gone.

On January 9, my phone informs me, I walked out the door to go home from work. I heard a roar, looked up, and saw a C130 approaching at very low altitude. I think that's what it was. I'm too lazy to check. We see them around here a lot, flying over our little town at what I believe is an illegally low altitude. It was only a short time since the last opportunity that I blew to get a quick shot, so my first thought was There's a picture, quick get the phone. I carry a fairly high end Motorola in a side pocket, where it is very easy to get to. It has a cool feature where you can activate the camera by giving it two quick rotations of the wrist. It can go from riding in my pocket to ready to shoot in about two or three seconds. I didn't waste time trying to compose the shot, just tried to get the thing in the frame before it went behind the building I had just exited. I got one shot and here it is.

So it's not as easy as it sounds. If this were, say, a flying saucer instead of a military plane, I'd surely have spent some time in the whatthefuckisthat zone before reaching for the camera.
