I'm inclined to accept that a small number of abductions are real. They may be done by extraterrestrials, or possibly by military/intelligence operatives. Abductions that I tend to accept are Boas, Betty and Barney Hill, Travis Walton, and maybe the Linda Cortile abduction because of the witnessing by United Nations statesman, Javier Perez de Cuellar.

But proponents of alien abductions don't consider it a rare occurrence. They seem to believe that hundreds or thousands of people have been abducted over the years.

What do you think? First of all, do you believe any abductions are real? Or do you chalk the phenomenon up to sleep paralysis? Alternatively, you may accept that some abductions may be real, but that they are rare.

Alien Abduction, Part 1
"Alien abduction experiences are some of the most profound and potentially frightening or, perhaps, spiritually enlightening, experiences that a person can have. In my experience, these experiences are not something that is often discussed in psychotherapy, although there are people who have been traumatized by these experiences and seek professional help. People in psychotherapy may be afraid to disclose these experiences to a mental health professional for fear of being labeled “schizophrenic” or “psychotic”.

Alien Abduction Part II
"It is difficult to determine how many people have had these experiences. According to surveys cited by Appelle, Lynn, Neuman, & Malaktaris (2014), 36% of the population of the United States believes that unidentified flying objects are actually alien spacecraft. Another survey found that 3.7 million Americans have had some form of abduction experience but the survey items allowed for the inclusion of experiences such as sleep paralysis that may not have been intended by the survey participants to be considered actual abduction experiences. One figure that has been cited is that about 2.5% of the people in the United States believe that they have been abducted by space aliens."

Alien Abduction Part III
"The final and, for me, most compelling explanation for most abduction experiences is the phenomenon of sleep paralysis with hypnopompic imagery. I have discussed this before in the context of incubus attack and up to 60% of people experience at least one episode of this in their lives. During these events a partial awakening from REM sleep occurs. Vivid and often frightening imagery from the dream is mixed together with actual aspects of the sleep environment, while the person remains unable to move due to the paralysis that regularly occurs in REM sleep in order to prevent us from acting out our dreams. This state is often terrifying and in the past was often interpreted culturally as an attack by some supernatural being. In the west this was often thought of as some kind of demon such as an incubus. It seems likely that since the start of the atomic, space, and information ages that culturally we would begin to interpret these frightening experiences in a more modern way. Most often, the experience will be shaken off as a bad dream but sometimes it has such intensity and feeling of reality that it stays with the person and can be elaborated over time into a more complex experience with all the features of alien abduction. I have often wondered if alien abduction experiences are more common among patients with narcolepsy as sleep paralysis is a feature of the disorder and is often frequently experienced by these patients. As far as I am aware there are no data that address this question."

There have been too many reported cases and to be honest, Stories about the Gods that came from the sky, How old are stories like that? Yeah, I believe abductions happen, I also believe we have had first contact on at least several occasions in the past.

At Peace.
When you experience stuff while wide awake, and in daylight, you know it is not sleep paralysis.

I would not call my experiences abductions.... but rather, visits.

Both, Visits, and Abduction has happened to people, I have no doubt, but I do not think it occurs near is as frequently as sleep paralysis, and sleep paralysis is usually the first thing I would assume, as it explains many night time experiences, especially if they are brief.

I didn't vote for any of the choices, because those are not all the possibilities. If there is a core abduction mystery, then that well has been well and truly poisoned by the abduction industry.

I am firmly in the camp that regards Hopkins and Jacobs as deluded pseudoscientists. With our witnesses, we try to steer the away from the amateur hypnotists and other charlatans.

What's another possibility?

Too much black and white in that list, and we haven't talked about the difference between raw reports (guaranteed to be mostly spurious), properly investigated reports (rare), and cases grossly inflated by "researchers" to fit their predetermined narrative.

Sleep paralysis surely accounts for many, if not most abduction reports, but not all.
False memories account for some, but not all.
And so on.

I still don't hear another option. Just complaints about the given options.

How about Visits, instead of abductions?
That would fall under the heading of "contactees," or something similar.

Alleged abductions are far more common; or if not, the experiencers are more vocal. The abductions are usually perceived as unpleasant.

I agree with Jr that positive encounters deserve their own thread.

I believe physical abductions are very real. Just how common they are is difficult to say. There is more than one way to encounter the paranormal, remember that people have been experiencing it through visions, dreams, and out of body travel for millennia. If we sum up all alien experiences of whatever sort as "encounters", I think the phenomenon is very common.

I can't be sure Kirk. I had an experience that took some time from me, not long.

I know the difference between a memory and a prime recall that should have been a memory. A reaction to pain that was the same as I displayed during my encounter, which was painless by the way, was my trigger. It has given me peace to think that these beings are greater than we. Humbling.

Since your experience was not negative, do you consider yourself a contactee?
Also, can you remember what they looked like?
