Gene Steinberg's Financial Shenanigans @ Paracast forums

So, as other people have already posted similar stories in this thread, I started receiving Gene's messages about a month ago (I've been listening to the paracast for a couple of years). I've heard about his begging for money before (in passing), but the emails sounded desperate. Nevertheless I started searching and ended up at UFOtrail and here. Now it is especially funny to read those emails in my geographical location - as my salary is probably lower than Gene's social security.

I'm not trying to get any sympathy for him, but here's the question: was he that desperate in his stories before (like one step away from living on the streets)? If not, could this be the poetic justice of "the boy who cried wolf" karma?

Hello and Welcome to AE...q37

Since Gene updated his empty forum to Xenforo 2.0 I have started receiving his pathetic e-begging mail...

Welcome!

My understanding is that his emails have become more frequent recently, but over the years have been periodically dire.

If you read the two to three blog posts Jeremy Vaeni has on the topic, and the comment threads, you can see Gene was proclaiming imminent ruin repeatedly years ago, even while leasing a nice Kia.

Is Gene Steinberg A Fraud?
Is It Time To Kickstart Mrs. Steinberg’s Puckered Starfish?

That's a lot I know, and there are other threads here and there around the web if you really wish to go full on down the rabbit hole (not really worth it imho, but I will admit I've been there myself). Anyway you probably already saw those, and the thread on the USofE forum about Biedny leaving the Paracast.

My impression is that asking others for money is a way of life for him and unfortunately that hyperbole and lying is a regular part of his approach.

That he has apparently been living in motel rooms for over three months now does suggest things have genuinely become more dire (and one can imagine as he both gets older, and exhausts his 'donor base' things will only become more difficult for him), but it's always tough to know what's the truth where Gene is concerned. I believe he will say whatever he thinks he needs to say in order to spur 'donations'. I also believe he will never stop asking for donations for whatever reason (it could be compulsive behavior, even, who knows).

I read somewhere that there hasn't been a post on Paracast forum since Monday. Is the forum finally dead? It's been in the process of dying for some time now but this seems extreme even for that place.

Deadlines and More Deadlines

Hi,

The financial pressures are mounting.

Today, I have to pay the storage facility or they will tack on a 20% penalty. In a few more days, they can dispose of my furniture, all of it, if I don’t pay.

The motel needs another payment so we can keep a roof over our heads.

I am putting aside some money to cover the car, so I can resume ride sharing. But it’ll be a while longer, and every day means lost money.

The PayPal problem is close to being resolved.

For now, here’s how you can help me today:

You can send an instant payment to me via Facebook Messenger, which provides for instant money transfers to my bank debit card.

Here’s my Facebook page:

Gene Steinberg

Another way to help is Venmo, a peer-to-peer app to transfer money. My username is @Gene-Steinberg-2.

I can also receive payments via Skrill. My username there is: gene@technightowl.com. I don’t know yet whether payment transfers to my debit card are instant.

If you don’t want to use any of the above payment methods, you may use Western Union or Moneygram. Walmart has a deal with Moneygram that offers a lower rate. You can send payments at your nearest Walmart store, or use the following link:

https://walmart.moneygram.com/walmart/us/en/

For me to pick up the money, I’ll need a tracking number.

Please write me if you have questions about these payment methods.

If you’re not able to send a donation, feel free to forward this message to someone who might assist.

As all this is going on, the show must also go on, and I continue to produce and host The Paracast and The Tech Night Owl LIVE. I just finished a major upgrade to The Paracast Forums, and I hope to resolve the remaining issues with the new site soon.

If you have any questions about my living situation, please let me know.

Peace,
Gene

When are they not? It's been 12 years - 12 bloody years man!

The motel needs another payment so we can keep a roof over our heads.

So in addition to the daily lesson about how motels work we now get an explanation for how storage works. He is an elderly man who lives in a motel with a tiny dog and a skeletal malnourished wife (I bet he doesn't even feed her) - he doesn't even need furniture. Someone needs to explain him that he is using the motel's furniture for free (maybe the furniture in storage is actually items he stole from the last motel because he doesn't know how motels work).

Hopefully he won't pay the storage and they will dispose of his useless furniture once and for all. That seems to be the only way to rid him of this "burden". Of course even if they did that being a Schemey Gene he would still pretend he had storage fees to pay in order to beg. Schemey never changes.

I am putting aside some money to cover the car, so I can resume ride sharing. But it’ll be a while longer, and every day means lost money.
Lost revenue for something he NEVER did. Losing zero dollars is not a loss.

The PayPal problem is close to being resolved.
He often says this. He has NO new information. Nothing further has happened with it and yet he has to make something up because he is Schemey. When it does eventually get resolved (probably in favour of the client who complained) he will never mention it again and claim some other disaster as a form of misdirection - a hack, a giant unexpected bill etc.

For now, here’s how you can help me today:
Actually the best way to help is to never send him anything and warn others.

I wonder if those few remaining members like Constance and Marduk even know or care that the Paracast is nearly dead? Who do they think they are talking to?

They probably like talking to themselves and don't care too much about engaging with others. Take that Squatchygirl character for example - she just posts random images and never speaks to anyone.

If things are as dire as he portrays (IF), I don't get the resistance to letting go of the furniture. I wonder if he has a budget at all. Something tells me he does not. He does already know about late fees though. I am not surprised.

And then it has to be said, even if he manages to hang onto a pile of cash earmarked 'new apartment', it's probably going to have to be quite a large pile indeed to get anyone to risk him as a tenant. Unless he lucks into a softhearted / clueless small landlord who doesn't bother with a credit check etc. If such exist any longer. Anyway something tells me saving money is not Gene's strong suit so, good luck. As others have said many times, motels may be the best place for him.

And yes, I also love how he is grim about not being able to drive for Uber or Lyft now - "every day means lost money" - when it seems quite unlikely he was driving even close to every day previously.

Well there are a few possibilities here:

The first is that he may well just be lying, there is nothing in storage. It is actually just another begging ploy.

Gene doesn't have any imagination so it is hard for him to come up with new things to beg for. He has probably used storage at some point in his life and just resorts to it as a begging crutch.

The second one is that despite trying to portray himself as being someone with very little possessions Gene has a lot of things that aren't furniture and he just can't bear to let go of.

We know how materialistic he is - he may well have a lot of gadgets, tech, computer equipment and things which he really doesn't need but he will never ever let go of and can't keep in a motel (because he is paranoid they will confiscate it in lieu of his motel bills when he tries not to pay or he might get robbed).

He probably has an inflated idea of how much it is worth (even though tech loses value super fast) but can't be bothered to sell it.

So as a result we end up with a classic Schemey stalemate where nothing changes and he wastes money on something which to any other person would be worthless junk and the first thing to go.

If you expect someone else to pay all your bills why would you budget at all?

I feel like if I were in Gene's shoes (terrible, terrible thought), I'd try to get an idea of how much money I need for an apartment, then figure out how much I can realistically save in a typical month, to see how long it will take me to get there. If I raise money from donations beyond my expectations then great, I'm in the motel sooner, maybe in 2019 even.

Again just my take but I would think in that situation you could determine how many months, approximately, it will take you to amass the money. If you get there faster, great, but you could likely commit to a motel for months after you see the numbers and shop for a better rate based on being a longer term resident.

But then I guess you couldn't send email approximately daily talking about needing to pay for the motel room. I saw someone comment on a blog post at the UFO Trail not long ago that they sent Gene $250 around October 1st; amazing to me he can still hook new donors, even after proclaiming "utterly urgent" emergencies for literally years.
