Why women are angry about Sofitel hotel ad

A SIMPLE photo of a couple enjoying a luxurious breakfast in bed, but it’s the book the woman is reading that has people fired up.

522c3dd4cfdfbf60478bb91e9dfc995d

AT FIRST glance this photo looks innocent enough — a young couple relaxing in a hotel bed, both reading over breakfast in their fluffy white robes.

He’s reading a copy of the Australian Financial Review newspaper and she’s flicking through a Chanel coffee table book.

Laid out on the bed in front of them are a selection of breakfast items. There are pastries and pancakes for him, a healthy fruit platter for her.

To every woman who has read an actual newspaper in bed alongside her male partner, this photo looks like an ad “straight out of Mad Men’s Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce,” as one critic on Twitter put it.

Many female readers of Fairfax’s Good Weekend magazine spotted the ad in Saturday’s Sydney Morning Herald newspaper on the weekend and slammed its suggestion that women only read light, frivolous material about fashion.

“Yes, newsflash for @SofitelBrisbane — some women are in fact more interested in whether stocks and shares are going up and down than whether hemlines are,” one woman wrote on Twitter.

“Ah yes, those hotel mornings when you wake up, put your hair in a nice chignon and read a coffee-table book about Chanel,” joked one woman. Replied another: “Jesus, is that a Chanel coffee table book? This is … so disheartening.”

“No no, don’t be silly, you are a woman, you only read fashion books and cookbooks,” another said.

One woman commented, “I’m surprised she’s not in skimpy underwear while he’s holding a handful of spanners”, while another said, “Funnily enough I actually prefer reading @FinancialReview in the morning.”

Hi @SofitelBrisbane, your breakfast looks delicious! Hey and just wanted to let you know I’m a woman and I also read the @FinancialReview every day pic.twitter.com/qOg5J2vkqz

Ugh. @SofitelBrisbane this ad is seriously misguided. Believe it or not, we’re capable of a whole lot more than just looking at pretty pictures. I know what I’d prefer to read. Elizabeth Redman on Twitter

. @SofitelBrisbane thumbs down to your gendered ad in @GoodWeekendMag showing Him reading about business and finance and Her reading about fashion pic.twitter.com/ELLB4etg

Of course the fruit platter is on her side, she'd be loathed to touch the baked goods...

Stereotype alert @SofitelBrisbane really?? Elizabeth Redman on Twitter

A spokesman for the Sofitel Brisbane apologised for the ad and said it has now been pulled from any future publications.

“There was no intention of portraying a stereotype but we recognise it and apologise for any offence that it has caused,” the spokesman said.

“The creative has since been pulled from any future communications activity.”

It seems to me that people have forgotten that women can be feminine, It's not a crime. Everything is going wrong with society these days, people wonder why I'm a hermit.
It's not okay to think anything or have any opinion or culture or creed or bias on anything ever. w25

Uh oh... did you just imply that it is not feminine for women to read a financial report whilst munching on pastry?

It's not a crime to have an independent thought or idea and express that in a diverse, free, and open society either, but apparently it is in America...

That's actually very funny, Nivek. Does that include North America too? lol

Even worse here mate. PC brigade is in full force. You cannot say anything without it being deemed sexist, racist etc...

All you need to say is that you voted leave in the Brexit vote and you are pounced on for being "racist" or an idiot for voting leave.

At least you have the right to "Freedom of Speech" although no doubt if the Democrats get it that will be amended....

I normally don't like to make generalizations about men and women but I have to say it really does seem these days that men can still laugh at themselves while, more and more, women are taking everything too seriously.

When The Three Stooges are plumbers and they're trying to fix a pipe and it breaks and gushes in their face, we love it. It's hilarious! What man can't relate to attempting home repair work only to have it backfire badly on them? :giggle:

And there was the Seinfeld ep about wedgies. As Jerry and George are reminiscing over their junior high experiences with wedgies, Elaine expresses her revulsion at their adolescent behavior. "So what kinds of things did girls do to each other," one of them asks. "Oh, tease each other until we developed eating disorders," Elaine responds.

Everything society offers women now is somehow offensive.

It’s simply the dumbing down of America (or any country you wish to insert.) It’s been happening for sometime now. Schools no longer teach children to think for themselves. Students are supposed to accept whatever is taught and what is being taught is tightly controlled by those with an agenda.

The biggest problem I have with what's going on in the US today is that Hillary Clinton and her supporters are continuing to attack people who voted for Trump. As far as I'm concerned, she can say anything she wants about Trump and Republican politicians, but attacking people who did their duty by voting and calling them names is uncivilized.

Don't worry. This side being exposed was once hidden and laying in wait, the longer the wait the more power it would have carried.

Quality over quantity is better than the opposite and that was where we were heading. I like the fact we are still learning of ourselves.

White man built opportunity as well as the world we live in and is now further down the road in terms terms of equality than ever before. It's a great thing to resent, naturally.

Only us in this world have diverted from nature's intent. See where it gets us, all in a twist over right and wrong. To a point that it depends where you stand on how it is viewed. The observer effect.

There is a right way and a wrong way that is determined by the times and not by our hearts or minds. Diversity is the irresistible force and we are creating the immovable object to counter it through compassion, problem is that it has to be real and not an inflatable. Man made equality is a good substitute for the real thing. Too much too young.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, Now that everyone has a platform, Everyone has a way to express themselves and be heard, The reaction to that is, People can misuse their platforms to try to normalize or justify their own point of views while vilifying other viewpoints. The problem is, Now everyone has the ability to speak to everyone else on large platforms Large groups and organizations have found that they can abuse those platforms to not only influence others But control others with ridicule and fascism.

Its a product of a society that really has little control over it's people or it's creation, And those who do possess great power and influence use it to their own means, As I suppose anyone would who had that power though. The problem is, There is no one around to tell the oppressing party when they are overstepping their bounds and no longer respecting other peoples right to free thoughts and opinions.

The internet has a lot of power and influence over peoples lives, large organizations and political activists use it as a tool to force their views on others with agenda purpose. People simply think I'm too paranoid, Or taking this too far.

I signed up for a Lifelock trial period. then I decided I didn't need it, I was subjected to a customer service representative telling me how I was the problem with today's online world, That People who are unprotected from hackers are asking to be Victims, That we are all targets and it's not just irresponsible to not be properly protected in today's online world, That it's almost a criminal offense because it's people like me who motivate those hackers.

No, I'm not kidding. This happened, People manipulate other people It's a story much older than the internet. But the internet with its widespread availability and influence has is in mear decades allowed once much smaller nitch groups within society, To control the way entire societies think. It's a political war, A cyber battle, aimed directly at how we think and interact with each other, bullets made from political correction are being fired at everyone across the board.

I would say it's a scary time to be alive, But I'd be lying, The Black plagues of Europe, Now those where some scary times to be alive.

The freedom we live with is a placebo. We are part of a code that we fight against and blame what ever flavour is strongest.

It's a wonderful thing yet makes nature score an own goal. Things have to remain divided as difference rules the ages and as nature would have your mind's eye see it, we strive to be one. Who has it right, us or nature.

Maybe we are learning that division has to be respected throughout the spectrum of topics it covers. I for one have no clue which is to be trusted as i'm the product of its confusion but will say that seeing it how it is and not what we would like to see, seems honest and the right way.

See, I put the T.V on and there is a cake row. A family run baker has refused to make a same sex marriage wedding cake and is now going to suffer because of it.

Why can't it just be excepted that some are free not to, just as those have been granted freedom to so. I personally would understand why not and use an alternative outlet.

Not even angled toward fairness.

I'd make a big brown yuletide log for them if I were the offended/offensive baker.

Um, so...y’all are outraged by their outrage..?
I for one couldn’t care less. Unless I happen to have some dealings with SofitelBrisbane (whatever the f*$& that is).

It's a hotel in Brisbane that over stepped the mark and for sure not caring is the right sentiment. What does it matter but when the first to get offended use a voice, the second voice is not about the subject matter but all about there being a first in the first place. Never seen as this though. Just anti.

Lip up fatty, how discriminatory. To think fat people only eat pie and chips. Inner London violence will surely take a foothold and many will think wooly bully but me na, just walking in the sunshine.

The tendency to be overly emotional and/or romantic, or even to be overly influenced by the inputs from your senses rather than by reason.

So Elinor had sense and Marrianne exhibited sensibility.

Sense and sensibility.

The 'gay cake' row is four years old now. The event happened in 2014. They were taken to court and lost their case and appeal, but today won a major legal victory in the Supreme Court which recorded a unanimous verdict that they did not discriminate against the customer in refusing to put that message on a cake. This is actually good news for a change, and a victory for common sense.
