I noticed it's on Netflix now. So I watched it this morning for the first time in a while. I don't think it says what edition of the film it is though. Does anybody know? What a great film though - it's what got me hooked on flying saucers :)

That movie was a wild ride when it came out. I haven't seen it in quite a while, so I may have to watch it while it's on Netflix. As I recall, it has held up well. The special effects may seem pretty tame now, but the story telling is still sharp and the acting is solid.

All I can remember about the director's cut or v2.0 was scenes of Roy Neary looking around in awe at the interior of the mothership.

Fantastic movie though. Had to laugh at having to break into that office to swipe the giant metal globe. Different times.

I think it's the theatrical cut. Out of all three (theatrical, special edition & directors cut) the directors cut is the best. There's a website that compares all three. I guess Spielberg felt pressured (this is his words) to finish the film & get it out. So being he was rushed, there was things he wanted to add/change. The studio said they'd give him the money to do it ONLY if he filmed a scene that shows inside the UFO - which is really anti climactic since you don't see much. So to get what he wanted, he agreed. That's when they filmed the desert scene with the big boat in it - almost 2 years later. Which is a great use of the "forced perspective" technique. Maybe Spielberg got some tips from Billy Meier on that? ;)

Also love the service truck scene where he's burned and sucked up onto the ceiling.

As I've mentioned before I always wondered if that would be my fate. Spent many hours in many odd places at odd hours in service trucks. Somehow that never happened.

I liked when the cops drove off the cliff chasing the lights.

One of the things that has bugged me since I've been a child is at the end when the craft opens up and a gigantic alien comes out with spindly, thin limbs & raised his arms in joy. Then that's the last we ever see of him. Spielberg said he purposely showed at least 3 different types of aliens; the tall spindly guy, the short ones & then the one that does the hand signals and smiles - to show that there was a diverse race of aliens working together. I just wish they would have showed the spindly guy more.

I did like that diversity.....

But like van danekens book chariots of the gods......it was more believable before I did research at a later date.

I watched an interview with Steven Spielberg. He said back in the 70's he knew "for sure" there aliens out there & that they've visited the Earth. But he says now that we live in the era of everybody owning a camcorder (I believe the interview was the pre cell phone era) there should be more pics/videos of flying saucers/aliens.....but instead, there's less. So now he's not so sure. (kinda sounds like my thinking).

I think we scared 'em off.
Sometimes I think maybe it was a situation like us and the moon? Like for a while we were going to the moon all the time and then suddenly stopped. Maybe for same races of aliens - they were coming here for whatever reason - and then suddenly stopped? I'm skeptical but that's a possibility I think.

Ha - I was watching CE3K again & noticed a mistake or two that I never noticed. Watch immediately before that one scientist guy goes up to Roy (at the end just as the little aliens are coming down the ramp) & starts asking him questions like does he have any history of liver disease, type of blood, etc.....right before he starts asking those questions, look to the left and you'll see one of the little girls that was in the alien costumes slip coming down the ramp & she slides all the way down like on her butt/side. Then right before that when the little aliens start to come down the ramp you'll see another girl also to the left slip & fall & right after that you'll see another one slip & fall. I see a total of 3 little aliens slipping & sliding their way down the ramp :)

I've wondered about that. I don't think we would be on AE at all if we honestly didn't think that we were being visited, but I think that the real cases are exceedingly rare. Fair to say that our level of technology has made us more aware of our surroundings - more capable of detecting visitations - and maybe that's it. But I can't imagine why a visitor would want to show up in our sky just to weave, dart and wobble. If observation were the goal you'd think there would be a better way to go about it.

Agreed. Like I said, back in the 70's & 80's I was a true believer & would spout out "flying saucer facts/cases" to the non believers & force family members & friends to watch documentaries. One of the things I would show is the intro to "UFO's Are Real" (there are several docs w/ this same title & with Stanton F. which is confusing) - there is the daylight Catalina Island footage shot from a helicopter. The narrator goes on to say "...it has no wings, no tail section & no visible means of propulsion." So when I would show that to people I'd say something like "See? This documentary just started & within the first two minutes they show a real flying saucer flying through the air! Just wait until you see the rest of the 'evidence'!" Then come to find out years later the flying saucer was a Cessna - as proven by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory analysis. Then the rest of the cases in the doc are all bunk (to me at least). B&B Hill, Rex Heflin, Paul Trent, etc. Then the last case I've held on to that I thought was a real encounter was the Coyne case which in my mind - is explained. For their grand finale they spend quite a while on the Meier case - which I don't need to go into. Anyway.....I'd be stupid to think that there is no life out there - but I don't think there is any proof that any of that life or their space vehicles has visited the Earth. Yes, there are lots of stories that sound pretty darn convincing but proof? Not in my mind. I have to admit it sucks learning all my cases that I thought were solid turned out to be garbage. I guess it's kinda like when a kid finally figures out there is no Santa Claus :/

I'll look up the Carl Higdon case (I've never heard of it). Catalina Island got debunked a long time ago. With their analysis you can see the fuselage, wing & wing strut of the Cessna. Now the questions is; did that guy that was filming it say "Wow! A flying saucer!" or did he know he was filming an airplane?

knowing the distance and blurryness of the film, i think it was a legit accident
