I would have to drive almost an hour to reach a Home Depot from my house, but Lowe's Home Improvement is only 10 minutes away so that's my choice between those two competitors...lol

I have been driving over 40 minutes to get dog food but a Tractor Supply recently opened near Lowe's so it's only 10 minute drive for my canine's viddles now...Damn city keeps inching along every year closer and closer to me, I don't like it...

I always bought my dogs food from the feed store here, our flour mill makes several brands, but the goofy dog i have now likes the cheap family dollar stuff. If it wasn`t for my wife`s health i`d like living in the country, this place is grown fast and the drivers here suck.

Cool but it sounded like you needed a 3/4" drive - or go to Sears during a different shift when that guy wasn't working :)
i think we had planned on a 3/4 but we had to stop a snapon truck just to find the socket and the 1/2 is all we could afford

My wife and I went to Home Depot looking for a Bagster as we were cleaning out our washroom filled with clutter. We asked where the Bagster was located. We were sent to 5 different locations and basically crossed the entire store until we finally blundered across it. My wife was PO’d and vowed not to return to Home Depot again.

Yeah, they can be challenging. Not like they are paying a group of skilled professionals to help you so it's luck of the draw. I am fortunate that the one near me has some pretty cool people in it - several of which are well into their 70s which probably makes the difference. They either give a s*** or fake it very well.

In the Sears I was referring to the salesperson had the personality of a three-toed sloth and obviously had zero idea of the product I was asking about. That I can take in stride. It was the crappy website that made me buy the item elsewhere and in 2018 that is a harbinger of doom. As for Home Depot - their app or website would tell you exactly where the thing you were looking for was and how many they had in each local store, and is generally (but not perfectly) accurate. I use it to bypass the nitwits - and in 2018 that is s.o.p.

And another thing .... in the vein of keep up or dry up:

I have an old Auto Parts store near me that I've used for decades. At one time they were the thousand pound gorilla in the area - they had or could get anything and the price was almost always right. They are a franchise and the chain is like AutoValue or some vaguely generic sounding thing. Zero useful online presence.

Now when I go in there I see a business that hasn't changed it's model and is ossifying. Essentially the same three guys behind the counter except by now two of them alone probably weigh over half a ton put together. They are generally nice and knowledgeable about what they sell up to a point. I do still get a few things there but they are basically small stuff like filters & oil. No way to know the price in advance. No way to see if there might be some other part or manufacturer available. You ask, you wait while a two-fingered-typer cranks away, and you pay - and hopefully not with a credit card because that requires them to have to get up and it's painful to watch. Then come back in a day or two to pick up whatever it was you ordered because the chances of it sitting on a shelf are less than 50/50.

Contrast that to an Autozone, Advance Auto or other chain. Nice clean glitzy places almost always overpriced as hell. You might get a somewhat knowledgeable person but more often than not it's some kid (who maybe just got fired from Home Depot ......). But, their websites and apps allow me to bypass that, they offer coupons and free store pickup and God Forbid, actually have some odd old things in stock. You can occasionally 'get a good deal there'

Sign of the times. Our expectations have changed and it's all about technology enabling self service. Hell, you can even order your Dunkin Donuts coffee on the run and maybe a Dominoes pizza from your stupid phone now. I think that may be carrying it a bit too far but they are at least in the game

Honestly, It would be the best possible thing to ever happen economically to the U.S if WalMart did go out of business. The presence of Walmart has completely destroyed the economy in small towns across the united states as mass.

Of course, everyone shops there, because they have unbeatable prices. So, No one ever shops at these local businesses. It's almost criminally offensive what the Wal-Mart brand has done to America, They buy their stock from overseas and sell the same items at a lower price, It sounds fair until you realize how much business they have taken from the smaller struggling business owners. It's completely ruined smaller towns across the country.

I watched a documentary that explained how it all started with Mr. Coffee being manufactured overseas.
Mr. Coffee story illustrates how and why jobs here often end up overseas

Lowe's is closing 20 underperforming stores in the US and 31 in Canada.
Lowe’s closing underperforming stores, including 1 in Massachusetts
QUINCY, MASS. (WHDH) - Lowe’s is closing more than 50 underperforming stores – including one in Massachusetts – by February of 2019.

The closures are a part of the company’s ongoing reassessment of their stores.

“While decisions that impact our associates are never easy, the store closures are a necessary step in our strategic reassessment as we focus on building a stronger business,” said Marvin R. Ellison, Lowe’s president and CEO. “We believe our people are the foundation of our business and essential to our future growth, and we are making every effort to transition impacted associates to nearby Lowe’s stores.”

Twenty stores in the United States and 31 in Canada will no longer be in service.

Lowe’s on Thomas Burgin Parkway in Quincy is the only store in Massachusetts impacted by the closures.

A store in Orange, Connecticut is also shutting its doors for good.

Walmart is NOT the place with all the best prices.
Stores like Family Dollar or Dollar General can have deals that beat Walmart and because they are small and pop up in many places and small communities/towns they fill a niche Walmart cannot.

I also dislike the atmosphere at Walmart. I avoid the place as much as possible.
We still have SEARS in the Appleton Grand Chute Mall and K-Mart in Waupaca...but for how long is the question.

I have never shopped at a dollar store before lol...I live near a small town and they have a Walmart which seems to be the gathering place for many in that town on the weekend...There will be crowds of people at that store on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, congregating in groups saying hellos and talking a while...its kind of annoying when I go there to get a few things and these groups of locals are all in the way cluttering the isles and they don't like to move for someone…
