A statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the famed Indian independence leader, has been removed from a university campus in Ghana's capital, Accra.

University of Ghana lecturers began a petition for its removal shortly after it was unveiled in 2016 by India's former President Pranab Mukherjee.

The petition said Gandhi was "racist" and African heroes should be put first.

In the wake of the row, Ghana's government at the time said the statue would be relocated.

Lecturers and students told the BBC that the statue, originally located at the university's recreational quadrangle, had been removed on Wednesday.

The university confirmed this, saying that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration was responsible.

Law student Nana Adoma Asare Adei told the BBC: "Having his statue means that we stand for everything he stands for and if he stands for these things [his alleged racism], I don't think we should have his statue on campus."

Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most celebrated figures of the 20th Century. He is best known for leading non-violent resistance to British colonial rule in India.

However, as a young man he lived and worked in South Africa, and although he has inspired people throughout the world his comments on black Africans have been controversial.

In his early writings he referred to black South Africans as "kaffirs" - a highly offensive racist slur. He also said that Indians were "infinitely superior" to black people.

.

I kind of wonder why he was there in the first place.....so I am not surprised.

That was my point. These old statues are being bought up and displayed on the buyer's property. There isn't a damn thing that anyone can do then. It's just relocating them from one place to another.

The statues were not banned.......but it doesn't matter where they are or even if they are. Whatever the case history hasn't changed.

History cannot change, but people's knowledge of history can which can lead to repeating the same mistakes...Of course a thousand years from now if we're still living on this planet these statues and the history they represent will probably mean little to those future people lol...

If people are relying on statues for their history then we are domed to repeat it......it is written down in far more places where is isn't forgotten.

I do agree that in 1,000 years it will matter little......but like 1,000 years ago we'll still remember the history of both sides in the civil war. All be it a bit more fragmented.

Obvious on both points, which is why I said they are representative, statues teach nothing, they are reminders...

Sure things are written down but we also have many revisionists these days who would ignore history in favour of their flavour in its stead..

Yes .....I saw them discussing the monument removals in New Orleans......and then there are also the apologists.

It's astonishing the sources some people will sometimes use or rely on for accurate information...

These people aren't happy at all with this statue removal...

Descendants of former Confederate General and KKK leader Nathan Bedford Forrest sue the City of Memphis for $30 million for 'desecrating his grave' after they removed his statue
  • The descendants of a Confederate general filed a lawsuit in a Memphis court seeking the return of a statue that was removed last year
  • In removing the statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest from Forrest Park, the City of Memphis desecrated the graves of the general and his wife Mary Ann Forrest
  • Both were moved from Elmwood Cemetery and interred in Forrest Park in November 1904
  • The statue was then placed on top of the sites several months later in 1905
  • The descendants argue that the site has always been a grave site and therefore is protected as such under state law
  • The family is seeking for a judge to order the return of the statue to the site.

yes they were upset......they could always move them back to Elmwood Cemetery. Its actually called disinterring not desecrating. Forrest had already spent 27 years there. I don't recall what year his wife died.

Who else is buried in that plot before 1904? Minus the statue it still looks like a rather imposing and respectful monument. I don't see why there is a US flag over his grave eventhough he did become a more loyal US citizen than most after he disbanded his "kkk" group because it became a hate group. Its his grandson that deserves a US flag.

Most people never take the time to learn the real history.

That is quite true........they think everything they needed to know they'd be taught in high school or college history classes. Its very easy to see why they think history is being erased because they never did anymore reading.......or like so many who expect it to be given to them.
