Amazon workers look to unionize

A committee of employees at Amazon’s recently opened Staten Island fulfillment center is going public with a unionization campaign, a fresh challenge to the e-commerce giant in a city where it plans to build a major new campus.

Labor unrest is the latest complication in Amazon’s plan to invest $2.5 billion and hire 25,000 people in the city over the next 15 years. Several New York City politicians who were shut out of negotiations handled by the governor and mayor have raised objections to a new office park in Queens that threatens to overload mass transit and drive up rents in an already expensive housing market.

Now workers in a another borough are saying the company treats them like robots and should be focused on improving conditions there rather than raking in tax breaks to build a new headquarters.

The union they’re working with sees the up to $3 billion in incentives offered to bring an Amazon office campus to Long Island City as leverage to prevent the company from retaliating against them for organizing.

Employees backing the union effort said issues at the warehouse include safety concerns, inadequate pay, and 12-hour shifts with insufficient breaks and unreasonable hourly quotas, after which they lose more of their day waiting unpaid in long lines for security checks.

You use the word 'union' in a sentence and it's immediately polarizing. In this case I have to agree with the employees backing the union effort.

Amazon uses dummy parcels to catch thieves

Amazon has teamed up with police in the US in an effort to stop thieves who steal parcels left outside homes.

Officers in New Jersey are planting dummy boxes fitted with GPS trackers, coupled with hidden doorbell cameras, at homes around the city of Jersey.

The homes selected for the experiment were chosen using the city's own crime statistics combined with mapping data of theft locations supplied by Amazon.

One box was stolen three minutes after it was "delivered".

YouTube has some great videos of thieves trying to steal packages. Some were set up and the thieves took the bait.

Mark Rober, a NASA engineer, had a package stolen from his porch by an alleged thief and the police told him it wasn't worth investigating
  • He came up with an idea to create an epic revenge bait package made to look like an Apple HomePod delivered from Amazon
  • Inside is a high-tech contraption complete with a glitter bomb, a fart spray, and hidden cell phones to record the thief's reaction and utilize the GPS
  • Rober tested the package and caught people stealing it with hilarious results

Amazon's Creepy Facial Recognition Doorbell Will Surveil Entire Neighborhood From People's Front Doors

facial-recognition_0.jpg

At first glance of Amazon’s new patent application, one would be tempted to think it no more than a built-in “smart” security system.

But no, this facial recognition surveillance doorbell does a lot more than record would-be thieves.

According to a new report, the patent application, made available in late November, would pair facial surveillance such as Rekognition, the product that Amazon is aggressively marketing to law enforcement, with Ring – a doorbell camera company that Amazon acquired in 2018.

CNN writes, “Amazon’s application says the process leads to safer, more connected neighborhoods, as well as better informed homeowners and law enforcement.”

Yeah, that’s one way of putting it. Here’s another:

Amazon is dreaming of a dangerous future, with its technology at the center of a massive decentralized surveillance network, running real-time facial recognition on members of the public using cameras installed in people’s doorbells. Jacob Snow, ACLU

Wow. Do you feel safer yet?

My hands are like rhinoceros hide. I use a little rubbing alcohol to disinfect and then use crazy glue to close the cracks when they get really bad. Stings but works. I've done a little woodworking and absolutely nothing gets your hands velvety soft like linseed oil. Dunno that I could recommend it daily but when I get done with a project my hands are happy for several days.

Surprise, Surprise....

Its astounding to me, even though overall the rich are paying a healthy percentage of taxes, that some rich companies like Amazon get away with this...

Their reply would be that everything is lawful and they are taking tax breaks due them. It’s all corporate BS but that is how the game is played.
