Oh sweet baby Jesus.

We're one of the families who are severely affected by the shutdown (husband is a USDA inspector, no paycheck, and my contract depends HEAVILY on bankruptcy filings, also affected), and I am watching EVERY. SINGLE. PENNY. and have been for the last FIVE WEEKS, because I could see the writing on the wall.

Yet all my bills are current till the end of the month, and while I don't have a lot of cash on hand, I do have a bit, and we're being very, very careful about our spending.

And I don't know about anybody else, but my debit cards don't work for gas unless there's a hundred bucks in the account. Just sayin'.

Sorry to hear that, SR. I hope things get back on track for you and your family quickly.

Thanks, Goblin. I appreciate your sympathy and everyone else's. It'll be fine once everything settles down. As I said, my bills are current till Feb. 1. Some people are apparently already putting up GoFundMes, and nobody missed a paycheck until today/tomorrow/Monday, depending on the department. (Ours would be tomorrow.) It's like, did you not realize this was coming? It's not like there weren't warnings as far back as December 5th. I didn't have a lot of time or resources, but what I had, I used as wisely as I could.

When I still worked, the employees of my company knew that they should set up a strike fund for themselves come the end of our contract. No strike ever went more than a month and everyone knew that there would be overtime once the new contract was signed.

The union my husband is a member of is legally unable to strike.
Unions in the United States have had their teeth yanked out, really, especially those unions connected to the Federal Government.

I wish with all my heart that that wasn't true, I am a strong believer in unions and I remember who Mother Jones actually was and who the Molly Maguires were, but...unfortunately, that's the way it is now.

Besides, this isn't a strike; this is the executive branch and the legislative branch playing a game of chicken.

I never cease to be amazed that nitwits can be surprised by toll booths - like they never saw one before and are amazed they are impeding their trip. Fortunately they are falling by the wayside.

No - no matter how much warning there are always peolpe caught off guard. I'd be willing to bet there was at least one idiot on the Titanic sitting on the can thinking of .... nothing ....

Well, it's not like it wasn't on every single news channel and all over the internet. I mean, just how willfully blind can you be? "Oh, they'd never do that at CHRISTMAS," or "President Trump would never do that!"

Well, he did. He is. And you're the one scrambling for your house payment. It doesn't affect THEM. Congress and the Senate are still getting THEIR paychecks, and this sure ain't hare-lippin' The Donald.

That's like people think government employees all make $100K a year -- no. Nope, nope, nope. My husband makes $48K annually BEFORE taxes. I make about 12. Just enough for the extras and the groceries, usually.

This week on the Paracast, the triumphant return of some guy from the forum who was also the guest a couple of weeks ago. Great start to the new year:

One of the Jackson Five, as I recall.

The former warriors coach now turned commentator, no doubt. It's about time Mark broadened his field of interest.

But apart from this - Gene was last reported to be overdrawn on Pay Pal with bills due and the motel expecting to be paid. He has been silent since then. Maybe the Paracast finally paid off . . . But the answer probably has more to do with the "really" addition to the title of the last general solicitation.

I suspect the fact that Gene has not begged in a couple of days is suggestive of the fact that he is either getting high off his drug of choice or on a gambling spree. As soon as it ends a new emergency will be declared.

I was a Paracast lurker until I started getting the begging emails. I didn't know about any of the shenanigans going on and figured it was spam, but a Google search eventually led me to this thread, so I joined this site instead. Silver lining for me, I guess.
