The Divided State of Europe

The only aim that unites the peoples of most middle eastern nations is the destruction of Israel.

Actually that should be rephrased, the only aim that will unite Shiites and Sunnis of most middle east countries is the destruction of Israel, but even then that would be short-lived in my opinion, they would eventually fall back into fighting between each other...If Shiites and Sunnis cannot even live in peace how the hell does the Christian nations of the EU think they can integrate them?...

as I understand, Yellow Wests don't have very strong central leadership, but are spontaneously self-organising through social media.

That's quite a new phenomena.

It is the issues facing the country that keeps them in cohesion in my opinion...I do not like Macron at all, I do not think he cares for his own country, I think he sees France as a commodity and that is a dangerous leader...

I don't suppose they have a source for this allegation, or care to back it up with any evidence that they themselves can provide?

I think that was a wild accusation of the writer, I searched a fair bit and could finding nothing about it nor anything to back it up...

Democracy does not give a country an ordered liberty like what exists in the West. Instead it is an ordered liberty that makes a democracy viable.

Indeed true, if the conditions of a country and its people are ripe for democracy it would become a stable country, continuing liberty for all, etc...,I used the word 'continuing' because there must be liberty for the people and personal freedoms already thriving in that country for it to become a stable democracy...Its probably impossible to install a democratic government from the outside and change the rest later...

instead of waging Jihads

I think most islamic terrorism is not because of a nationalistic or patriotic act performed out of duty to country, it is performed as a duty to their god, which makes them even more dangerous than patriots to a country would be to its opposition...

May cannot simply withhold the £39billion from the EU, or at least not all of it. Paying the full amount in the event of reaching a withdrawal agreement will be a bargain compared to what the cost will be without such an agreement.

The £13bn in foreign aid is a questionable indulgence, and there would also be massive savings from scrapping the HS2 rail project and the replacement of the Trident nuclear missile system (Britain could manage with nuclear cruise missiles and gravity bombs, instead of a staggeringly expensive ballistic missile system that we lease from the USA, and who maintains ultimate control of it).

Italy and Poland in talks on anti-EU league

The meeting, between Polish ruling party chief, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, and Italian interior minister and deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini, on Wednesday (9 January) is to discuss Poland's membership in Salvini's new EP group, according to Italian daily La Repubblica.

"It's a meeting at the highest level. If [party] president Kaczynski meets another politician, it's a sign of a certain special relationship, which is how we're treating it," Polish foreign minister Jacek Czaputowicz also told Polish radio station RMF on Saturday.

"We have to discuss matters related to the European Parliament," Czaputowicz added.

Jacek Sasin, an MP from Kaczynski's ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, said it was "uncertain" whether the meeting would "deliver a certain objective, an agreement".

But Salvini and Kaczynski would "exchange ideas ... on how the European Union should function", he said.

"There are definitely different points of view between us and Mr Matteo Salvini ... but that doesn't mean we don't have some ideas in common on how the [European] project should be modified," he added.

Kaczynski's party currently sits in the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, which has 73 deputies.

But the ECR is likely to collapse when its British Conservative party members leave after Brexit, leaving PiS homeless in Brussels.

The main group, the centre-right European People's Party (EPP), already has a Kaczynski-type member, Hungary's nationalist leader Viktor Orban, whom it has kept in its club to try to contain him.

But the EPP is also home to Poland's main opposition party, the Civic Platform, ruling out PiS membership.

That leaves the new Salvini-led group as an option, whether to gain power in the EP, or to gain leverage in Warsaw's fight against EU sanctions on PiS' abuse of rule of law at home.

"The message [of Wednesday's meeting] is: The Polish government is shifting its position to the anti-European fringe," Slawomir Nitras, a Civic Platform MP, said.

"It [the Polish government] is not just sceptical [of the EU], it's joining up with forces who are thinking of how to dismantle the European Union," he added.

Corbyn is another dangerous fellow, he sees his country as a commodity but in a more diabolical way than Macron...Don't give that man any real power...IMO

The Economist - Jeremy Corbyn is having a bad Brexit

Mr Corbyn is much farther away from his party’s centre of gravity than Theresa May is from hers. He is a long-standing Eurosceptic who believes that the EU is a capitalist club that stands in the way of building his socialist Jerusalem. He voted against Britain’s membership in 1975, opposed the single market in the 1980s and only pretended to campaign for Remain in the referendum of 2016. He is surrounded by an inner circle of Eurosceptic advisers who do their best to steer a Europhile party in a Eurosceptic direction.

Mr Corbyn has tried to manage these contradictions by resorting to grand banalities. He has claimed that Labour supports a “jobs-first Brexit” that will magically provide all the benefits of Brexit with none of the costs. He has headed off calls for a second referendum by saying that he wants a general election instead. That strategy is wearing thin.

Yellow Vest activist's HAND is torn off amid horrific scenes of violence between police and protesters in Paris - after France's President of the National Assembly's country home is firebombed

Violence broke out on the streets of Paris today as anti riot police confronted a mass of French yellow vest protesters on the 13th consecutive weekend of demonstrations.

Tear gas and baton charges were used around the Champs Elysee, after demonstrators threw stones at officers and vandals tried to smash shop windows.

Shocking footage shows protesters gathering around a man whose hand appears to have been ripped off which spurts blood as he cries in pain.

Other grisly scenes show demonstrators trying to topple boards, throwing planks of wood and cornering police as more tear gas is thrown.

For the Dutch, Brexit Is a Furry Blue Muppet Monster

The Dutch foreign minister, Stef Bloks, appeared with “the Brexit monster” in a photograph that has been widely shared on social media.

The mascot was immediately christened the “Brexit Muppet” by social media users.

The label also drew a wry collective sniff from Britons for whom the term “muppet” is a mild insult.

The blue Brexit monster is apparently the distillation of Dutch fears of the unknown as Britain has spent more than two years negotiating the minutiae of its departure from the European Union and a no-deal exit seems more likely.

The prospect of Britain crashing out of the bloc has alarmed many member states, including the Netherlands.

The monster is part of the Dutch government’s “Brexit Loket,” which roughly translates to Brexit information desk, a hub of business resources to avoid having “Brexit get in your way,” according to the campaign’s tagline.

The Netherlands concluded that the furry monster was the best way to warn its businesses that operate in the United Kingdom about the potential impact of Britain’s departure from the customs union.

“Brexit is not only on the desk of the Dutch minister, but it is something that everybody has to deal with,” said Dirk-Jan Vermeij, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “It is essential that entrepreneurs prepare for all Brexit scenarios, including no-deal.”

The Netherlands is clearly trying to allay any concern about how its companies will be affected by Britain’s divorce from the trading bloc: The country is one of Britain’s top trading partners, and the Dutch economy could lose out on 10 billion euros, or $11.3 billion, worth of trade because of Brexit, according to the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis.

“In terms of the countries exposed to Brexit, the Netherlands is one of the biggest,” John Springford, deputy director of the Center for European Reform in London, said on Thursday by phone.

“No-deal Brexit would be the largest hit, but all of the different scenarios are going to entail some sort of economic cost,” he added.

In spite of the warnings the Netherlands issued to its businesses over the possible negative impact of Britain’s departure from the European Union, the Dutch are also positioning themselves to benefit from it.

The Dutch government has been selling itself as an alternative for firms based in Britain that are looking to keep their operations in the trading bloc, and it recently boasted that it was in talks with 250 companies about moving.

Britain, for its part, is steeling itself for the loss of some international business as one consequence of Brexit.

Memes 'will be banned' under new EU copyright law, warn campaigners

A new copyright law from the European Union would lead to the banning of memes on the internet, campaigners are warning.

The EU Copyright Directive intends to protect the intellectual property rights of people who upload their material to the internet.

However, campaigners are warning the law will require "all content uploaded to the internet to be monitored and potentially deleted if a likeness to existing copyright is protected".

The campaign against a particular provision of the directive, Article 13, warns that online platforms would be economically damaged if they were forced to comply with its expensive obligations.

The law would "destroy the internet as we know it" warn the campaigners, who add it would "allow big companies to control what we see and do online".
