U.S. discount retailer Payless ShoeSource Inc plans to close all of its approximately 2,300 stores when it files for bankruptcy later this month for the second time in as many years, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

The move would make Payless one of the most high-profile victims of the string of bankruptcies that have hit the brick-and-mortar retail sector as more shopping is done online. Toys "R" Us and The Bon-Ton Stores are among the retailers that shut their stores in liquidations in the last 12 months.

Payless had been trying unsuccessfully to find a buyer. After no such deal could be clinched, the Topeka, Kansas-based company has decided to initiate preparations to liquidate, the sources said.

Family Dollar To Close Nearly 400 Stores
NEW YORK (CNN Business) — Family Dollar will close 390 stores this year and make big changes to the stores it is keeping open as the discount chain seeks a turnaround.

There currently are dozens of Family Dollar stores in Kentucky. It is not clear which sites might be targeted for closing.

Family Dollar sells a variety of items for under $10 at rural and urban locations. Dollar Tree bought the company in 2015. But Family Dollar has struggled, and Dollar Tree is under heavy pressure from an activist investor to sell or revitalize the ailing line.

Dollar Tree (DLTR), which sells everything for $1 and caters more to mid-income customers with suburban stores, has a plan for Family Dollar: Close stores, re-brand some locations as Dollar Tree, and renovate others with $1 Dollar Tree merchandise sections.

“We are confident we are taking the appropriate steps to reposition our Family Dollar brand,” Dollar Tree CEO Gary Philbin said in a news release Wednesday.

The second-to-last Blockbuster location in Perth, Australia announced it will close by the end of the month
  • That means a store location in Bend, Oregon is the last Blockbuster in business
  • The Oregon shop's been open for over 20 years and claims it's remained open thanks to the demand for old classic films - the 'bread and butter' of the shop
  • Blockbuster was popular in the 80s and 90s until going bankrupt in 2010
  • The company then shuttered most of its 9,000 locations
  • 'We're proud to still be open,' Bend location owner Sandi Harding said
  • The Australian location announced it will close due to competition from online video streaming websites like Netflix
