Hurricane Maria

This hurricane is following Irma's path but more south as it looks to hit Puerto Rico straight on...It's a strong category 3 but quickly intensifying, should be a category 4 within 10 hours or less...

Where the hell do these come from??

Storms in and around the west coast of Africa are more frequent this year coming across the Atlantic...

They say Maria will probably not threaten the US mainland but it's still early and things could change.

Puerto Rico is going to get devastated -- the last thing they need with their already bad economy.

Maria has become the most powerful hurricane this season and in the top 10 most powerful ever. She's bombing out now before hitting PR. She's at 909MB and falling. Hurricane recon has just now reported SURFACE WINDS of 198mph.

Look at how small and compact the eye is. That's the best rule of thumb to be able to tell how intense a hurricane is.

Smaller eye - very intense and violent hurricane. Not as large of a storm but significantly more violent. Very strong violent catastrophic winds throughout the entire storm not just the center.

Larger eye - not as intense but still powerful. Larger eyes usually cause the storm to "elongate" making the storm cover more mileage. Due to that the energy is distributed in a larger area hence a "weaker" hurricane with the strongest winds being at the very center. We saw this with Irma.

I'm really keeping my eye on this one too. I have a really bad feeling this ol' girl has her sights on NYC. Jose may force it to the east coast if he doesn't decide to pack his shit and leave.

I heard the same thing on the news about the eye. It's only 11 miles in diameter and Irma was over 40. Strange, I couldn't recall the name Irma and had to look it up.

If you look at the computer model you can see Jose above Maria and a third system to the east that's preventing either system from moving out into the Atlantic.

Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, is about to emerge off the northwest coast of Puerto Rico after becoming the island's strongest hurricane landfall since before the Great Depression, continuing to lash the island and the nearby Virgin Islands with destructive winds, flooding rain and storm surge.
