I think it's a common theme that people who have very old black & white photos of family long gone can't identify them. If left for the next generation they would be even further removed. What do you do with pictures or albums like that?

My grandfather took several hundred pics during his WWII service, my mom has them all. I'm just going to guess that one of her children (probably my sister) will keep them all together and make them accessible to other family members.

I have several boxes of stuff like that. Organized them all by size & shape - stories reassemble themselves sometimes when you do that. See who had what camera and where they got it developed. Then I wrote down as much as I knew and dug into Ancestry.com. There is far more very detailed info out there than I ever imagined.

Made a big spreadsheet and figured out almost everybody back to roughly 1885. My grandparents were born in 1908 and 1912 so we're not talking about going back too far and yet I'd need a Greyhound bus (or two) to put them all in. Amazing how many people came before you and how quickly the number of people adds up. Made for a busy spreadsheet.

Lot's of taciturn salt-of-the-earth types in there that worked the good soil and then just crawled into it without much ado.

My aunt gathered alot of family pics and put them on CD along txt describing how people are related, I think she traced it back to 1577 somehow
