Interesting, but how is one's rank of value determined ? ....

There are variables.
We kill animals for food.
Rank and guide lines is something not totally known.
One guide line would be intelligence capable to tool and machine making.
Another might be an intelligence that no longer preys on itself...as we humans do

Reportedly some of our otherworldly visitors see us as little more than animals.

Karma sounds like Newton's Third Law as applied to the soul. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Some people seem to get more than their fair share of s**t so either they're paying for a whopper past life sin or maybe it isn't really much like the third law at all, maybe more like a Corbomite Maneuver.

It is a balance thing.
Karma insures balance and meaning to life.
Yes, one who has always done good could still get a shaft in life. Pass life actions do carry over if they have not been fully satisfied.

My own take on this is that each one of us can create that 'haunting' of bad choices, along with any baggage carried along through life, no matter what that baggage is filled with, it is each of their own doing, karma has nothing to do with it, it shifting blame and not seeing what actually is, seeing hough filters of belief systems and conditioning through life and filling up the baggage accordingly on our own...Hope that helps clarify what I meant as well...

Karma doesn't work like this to me, it's a force and helps facilitate our endeavours, no matter right or wrong, and using karma as it really is then the outcome of those endeavours is also revealed early on, with it being our choice to continue on or make changes then and there...All the cards can be shown if we choose to see them instead of letting the dealer (karma) lay a few of them face down, it's our choice...

Maybe not the best analogy but it's off the top of my head lol...

I'm still reading and listening to programs about the afterlife. Mostly the accounts of people who have had Near Death Experiences, as these are the most common first-hand sources I find. There are alot of commonalities in these accounts, and I am pleased to see that all of them discover that they are very much loved and appreciated on the other side, even if they are confronted with their sins and mistakes.

My desire to learn about the afterlife only gets sharper as more people and animals in my life cross over and I know I will not see them again in this life. Yesterday, my last great-aunt on my mom's side died. Also, one of my cats is terminally ill. I know that death is normal and no one is exempted from it. At the same time, damn, it scares the shit out of me. My own death not so much, especially if I live a reasonably long life. I do feel really bad for those who will mourn my death, but I have to say I am excited to find out what is on the other side. I just really wish I could not fear death so much for other people and animals. I'm sure billions of other folks have felt these same things and asked the same questions before, and will do so in the future.

Last words - like Steve Jobs saying something like 'oh wow' while staring off.

Stonewall Jackson supposedly said 'Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees'
A lot of talk from a traumatic amputee dying of pneumonia loaded with morphine and whiskey.

Anyone think they 'see it coming' or are most of these apocryphal ?

Hey friends. These days, I spend most of my free brain capacity thinking about what happens to us when we physically die. I am a fairly devout Christian, however our Bible isn't really detailed about this topic. Pretty much, if you believe in Jesus you go to a better place. If you don't, you go to a worse place. I have been reading alot of books and articles on the topic. From what I can tell, there are likely to be levels of Heaven and Hell. Reincarnation is possible but not guaranteed, and we may be reincarnated somewhere other than Planet Earth. Our beliefs and behavior in this life (or others we have lived) determines which Heaven or Hell we go to. It seems quite possible that we can graduate from one level to another, or go backwards to a worse level. Also, some spirits of deceased people can stay here for various reasons.

This is what I have come up with so far. My Christian faith doesn't demand that I proclaim one particular explanation of the afterlife as 100% true and all others are false. So, I am willing to learn and revise my expectations. What does everyone here think about the afterlife? How did you arrive at your beliefs? Any books/articles/lectures or other resources that you found particularly enlightening?

OK. Let's try something different.

If you could choose your last words what would they be?

"DUCK !!" or 'exact change, really ?' or 'I didn't save the receipt ....'

Just do like Homer Simpson and place a bet on every horse in the race:

"Jesus, Allah, Buddha I love you all!!"

On the evening of May 9th, General John Sedgwick was inspecting his line and directing artillery placements at Spotsylvania. Confederate sharpshooters were firing shots at the Union army from around 1,000 meters [I think it was more like 800 yards but still impressive] away, causing them to duck for cover which prompted General Sedgwick to say “What? Men dodging this way for single bullets? What will you do when they open fire along the whole line?”

Trying to shore up his men’s spirits, he assured them
“They couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance.” Just moments after he uttered those words, a Confederate sharpshooter struck and killed him.

I sure don't blame those soldiers! In the Civil War, if you didn't die quickly from a bullet wound you were probably going to die slowly from infection or receive an amputation- and then die from infection anyway.

Civil War Battlefield Surgery | eHISTORY

Walter Reed Hospital has a museum about battlefield surgery that's cool if you're ever in the DC area. Got Dan Sickle's legbone in there. Horrifying and fascinating at the same time. https://www.medicalmuseum.mil/index.cfm?p=exhibits.past.nationswounds.page_02

Those big soft lead bullets do a lot of damage - which is what makes things like shotgun slugs good bear and cryptid medicine. The Geneva convention requires full metal jacketed bullets because they're clearly much more humane and civilized and cause different types of damage to the human body. ?!?

Uncle John was probably hit by a hexagonal bullet from a Whitworth rifle. Interesting historical dead end. Much more so for the General .....

So, does anyone have ideas or beliefs about the afterlife for pets? My oldest cat is terminally ill and has good days and bad days. I just keep wondering where she is going to go, and if I will ever see her again. This experience has sharpened my desire to receive some sort of communication from people and animals who have crossed over. At night before I go to sleep, I practice breath control and meditation. In my mind, I ask my loved ones simple questions like:

Are you there?

Am I living my life in a way that makes you proud?

Are you reunited with your own loved ones?

Will I see you again?

In my mind I receive simple yes or no answers. Of course, I have no idea whether that is my imagination, I am hearing what I want to hear, or if the spirits are actually trying to reach me.

I cringe when a pet dies and someone mentions 'the rainbow bridge'. My dogs go over it and poop on the other side, dig holes and bark at everything.

Hard to say. Some pets I was closer to and remember better. Unfortunately some have faded over time. Once in a while I think I hear a collar jingle or smell something and it's as if I can turn around and my old friend will be there. Maybe that's how I'll know I'm really dead - it'll be my old boy (young again) waiting for me asking to go for a ride .....

Very dog-o-centric. I've had a few memorable feline friends including a whopper of a big grey tomcat. So could be him
sitting there with that half amused yet imperious look.

So I guess if I have to choose I'd say yes, in some fashion we'll encounter them again. They were living, breathing creatures and it would be arrogant to exclude non-humans. It's all part of the Big Picture, down to every blade of grass and bit of coronavirus.

Reincarnation means that whatever life we led is only a part of what we are so if we encounter loved ones I'd expect the familiar along with the WTF.

At least I'd like to think all this. We all have our doubts, and all that is probably part of our wiring for a reason.
