What has happened to hiring out contractors to do household projects? I have had issues with a couple of them lately. I needed the toilet and the bathroom flooring changed. When I got estimates one guy asked me where I purchased the toilet. When I told him, he said it was a good thing I didn’t buy it at Lowe’s or Home Depot. He wouldn’t do the work if I had purchased from either of those two places. Needless to say, he didn’t get the job.
I needed to have some ceiling tiles replaced in our family room. The guy I hired sent out two workmen I had my doubts about. When they showed up, I went upstairs to stay out of the way. I didn’t hear anyone working for a long period. They finally came upstairs and said they couldn’t do the job. Alarm bells started going off. They left and I went out in my garage. I heard them opening the door to the garage. I thought they were throwing something out in the garbage can out there.
It turns out I was missing a couple items I use on a regular basis. I called the contractor and told him his guys didn’t do a thing and I though they stole some items of mine. He stopped out and we had a discussion. The next day he arrived back with the stolen items in question. He said the one worker was in jail now. He still wanted to send someone else out but I said thanks but no thanks.
I now feel I have to keep a close eye on anyone that works for me. It is a sad state of affairs that you can’t trust anyone who is contracted out to do some household repairs.
