I'm on hour 18 at work, probably an all nighter tonight, having some problems on 3rd shift I have to straighten out...Stopped by my house on a late 30 minute lunch to feed kobi and let him outside, will probably stop back by he house again in about 6 hours from now to let him back outside...

...

Hour 24 and counting, still at work with my 3rd shift people...

I've done too many of those myself, Capitan. Just remember that days like these make your life shorter, so you want to make damn sure that they're worth it.

Some causes are worth dying for - I'm at peace with the sacrifices that I've made in order to do what needed to be done. And I hope that you are too.

Agreed. Sleep deprivation and stress burn up things that don't get replaced.

I really wasn't a regular visitor to the family grave site, but the fact they never went back to check that the job was completed speaks for itself. All along they considered it someone else's problem and I guess it was.

The idea of being embalmed, painted, displayed, entombed and planted is disturbing to me. My mom and aunt share that plot and were chucked in the hole still in the cardboard box from the crematorium. That's my personal desire, less the plot and stone. Ashes to ashes.

But my aunt used to tend that grave site and after she became debilitated I reassured her I would. A handful of trips per year and it isn't too far. So I guess I do it now out of respect for my family. Eventually nobody will or even remember who's buried there.

While there I have asked questions and listened for EVPs :)

That's what they do, these types who have no problem letting someone carry the can until they no longer feel the weight of it. Well i'm not doing it any longer and as with many of these shister like characters he can't look at me now, to be fair he has looked side ways at me for a while as he knows he and his mother put it on others to sort their shit out. I can't honestly think of one occasion I have asked for or been offered any help from them and it's not just me, other people come and take her here and there all the time.

I would like to die in the wild for some strange reason and will take things into my own hands if I find myself polishing the floor of the local infirmary with my slippers. I've got a way to go yet but it seems the closer you get the clearer it becomes and I intend on slipping out the side door will laughing. I did an awful thing in the home where my dad was, this old guy who had his marbles was giving my dad some stick and going for him, bad alzheimers case my dad was. I walked in on it and lost my shit in a second, dear me, I threatened to throw him out the window while my dad was cheering me on. I said to him if hear any thing else has gone on I would fuck him up. Terrible isn't it but I was under a duress not felt before, it worked a treat though and I went and told the manager I had just threatened Micheal and no staff were present if he hears anything about it. The staff were there but they split as soon as I lost it, I think they thought he deserved it as he was a shit to everyone but looking backI feel bad and I guess that's the last belch my spleen has.

I've done more of these work 'marathons' in my younger years, especially in the Navy but now being a little older it can be more difficult...I'm finally home for the day, went 26 hours straight, then went to my office and slept at my desk for 2 hours and went back into the Plant for another 10 hours...Ever hear the expression, 'boy my dogs are tired', I can relate to that right now lol...

I'll have Sunday off most likely but not Saturday, but I'll take a couple days sometime soon, maybe tie those two days with a weekend to get 4 straight days off, I've done it before lol...I haven't went to sleep yet since that 2 hour cat nap, I'll be up a few more hours tonight before going to sleep...

You have to watch yourself doing all these hours.

We say barking but I know what you mean about putting your feet up after it. It's the one thing that gets nicer with age, not the barking but putting a muzzle on themmand taking the weight off. If I go for twenty plus line marking my gait changes with time until I'm doing the penguin.

My two cousins I literally cut off, as in 'never speak to me again' and so far that's worked. My wife helped a young girl out who worked in her office and that became a 'feed the stray cat' mistake. She needed to be hospitalized and medicated, and eventually was. But her family was on my wife like a stink asking outrageous favors from her - outsourcing their problem. That didn't work. Mrs.Pigfarmer is no one to F with.

Nursing homes. My aunt collapsed in my arms at the supermarket checkout one day and never went home again. She went absolutely apeshit, as in, roll around in the hospital hallway cowboy saloon type fist fights. Couldn't help it. and had to be restrained. She was sent to a geriatric psychiatric facility about 50 miles away and got the Chief Bromden treatment. Well, not that severe but medicated and calmed down. She eventually got to a local nursing home that was a decent place as those things go. One week there and they have you running with the pack.

Her son then found the wherewithal to relocate from another state to her home, starting talking Jesus and then found himself a woman. As if he just nailed a circular to the town hardware store advertising for one. He got himself a real doozy too - there's a lid for every pot. Couldn't seem to do much while his mother was in her own home but had no problem slipping right into her sheets the second she was out.

We don't get to pick and choose the method of our own deaths, generally speaking. But I agree, better to burn out than fade away. In a diaper.

As Above So Below
So after getting around 9 hours of sleep last night I worked another 14 hours, home now and with Saturday being another work day I'm looking forward to Sunday, and doing some work around the house which is much different...Tomorrow though is a day I am not looking forward to at all, 16 to 18 hours minimum to replace hydraulic seals in large hydraulic valves which are located on top of extremely large hydraulic cylinders, 14 valves on 14 cylinders while still inside this massive machine about 18 to 20 feet up...We have to use a scissor lift to get up on top of the machinery, then climb inside sitting on the cylinders and i-beam framework to perform this task with another engineer who is an expert on this equipment along side of me showing me how this must be done and two technicians below us giving us support work, handing up materials and draining out the hydraulic fluid from the valves and cylinders ahead of us...We have calculated this work to take a minimum of 30 hours to complete and we have been given two days to do it, Tomorrow and Monday next week...I have never performed this exact type of work before although I have worked with many hydraulic systems, just nothing this large in size...I've reviewed the schematics of this machine extensively, its really a no-brainer looking at the drawings but given the extremely large size of the machine, its bigger than my home, and being about 20 feet up in it for an extended period, its going to be very physically demanding and also a messy job, hydraulic work usually is...The engineer who is going to be working with me flew in from Arkansas to show me how this is done, he said he never looks forward to doing these type of seal replacements either but I'm sure he is getting the big bucks to fly out here and work with me on this project, and he said he understands how difficult this job will be and said that he will be working right with me until its finished and not just instructing with me do all the work...Oh yeah and I almost forgot to mention, that machine is running production tonight until midnight and its getting shutdown to prepare it for our work which starts at 0600 am tomorrow morning...That's 6 hours for it to cool down, the 20 inch thick platen those 14 large hydraulic cylinders are connected to has a normal operating temperature of 500 degrees Celsius or 932 degrees Fahrenheit, they are giving us only 6 hours to cool down that temperature for us to work about 12 feet above that platen...So they are leaving the press open and putting fans around it but leaving the hydraulic pumps running until the fluid temperature cools down to 185 degrees Celsius or 365 degrees Fahrenheit, then the pumps get shut off...Yay...

Reading that it sounds cool and I totally understand getting into it. Makes me almost miss stuff like that too - deadlines, working at strange hours doing doing difficult tasks. Addictive and well, addictive ...... :)

I am looking into an opportunity that came up and my memories of life on the front lines are flooding in. An organization that has several thousand users with a modern VoIP system that's stuck half way over the fence trying to shed the vestiges of a legacy PBX leftover the the late '80s. I've done more of those than I can count on networks several times their size, all over the place in all sorts of environments for all sorts of businesses, government agencies, school systems, colleges etc. Thing is, this place has recognizable idiosyncrasies and that's why they're stuck with the old dinosaur in the basement. While I can absolutely guarantee that I have a much better handle on the technology involved I'm not sure I can deal with the environment and personalities at work there. In fact, I am starting to actually feel something I've known for a while - my time is done with all that.

Interview stories.

World weary admin type and two young men recently out of college. I answer the technical questions from the lads and they are satisfied. The admin looks like she'd be happy to just throw me the keys to the switchroom and be done with it - the analogy might be 'the damned toilet's never working right and this guy's a plumber ....'

And then we have the minuscule Asian lady who is in charge.

I am close to a foot an a half taller than her and (barely) sitting at one of those chairs with a little desk attached to it like in high school. She's sitting in front of me like a fairy or elf or something and literally squirming around in her seat. I dunno, maybe she had to go to the bathroom or needed some Desitin. Then she whips out a partially eaten and brown apple and is munching it thoughtfully while looking at the ceiling as I answed questions, occasionally making a sour 'who farted face.' People reveal themselves in small details. This is someone used to holding court.

I see what the admin already knows and am mentally backing out of the room slowly. I may be back for another interview, who knows. I'm arrogant enough to look at this bunch and say 'you people live in a bubble' and suggest they maybe Google up how to conduct a professional interview. I am always respectful but don't know if I can feign being obsequious to the degree necessary. Still interested in the technology but deadly sick of the rest that goes along with it.

I already put the snowthrower down in the shed. I might have just called down an Ice Age upon New York by doing that, but I think winter is over

Today was quite an experience and turned into a 14 hour day, I knew it was going to be a long one too, I was estimating it would be 10 pm before I left the Plant but at 8 pm I was heading to the car...By the end of the day parts of me were either saturated with hydraulic fluid or grease or a mixture, but my overalls and the rag wrapped around my head were quite clean when I first went up on the scissor lift at 10 after 6 am...Carl, the engineer from Arkansas, was going up the lift with me, talking to me about the coronavirus lol...We got up on the framework of this machinery my first time up on top of it since I started working in this building, its a massive press indeed over 30 feet up to be able to climb 10 feet back down into it to reach the massive hydraulic cylinders...We can only get to 2 of them at a time, each pair divided by a 3 inch thick solid steel wall, we have to climb down between these walls with all our tools and stand on top of the hydraulic cylinders in order to replace the seals we were tasked to do, after completing 2 of them we climb back up to the top with all our tools and go over a dividing wall and climb back down to reach the next pair of cylinders...

Well, the engineer estimated a time of about 2 hours per cylinder for us to complete the job, the first 2 cylinders took us 8 hours...Unforeseen problems arose early on, damaged supports were discovered we had to fix, and the lifting mechanism he brought with him for lifting some of the piping did not fit correctly on the machine we have, so we spent an hour in our fabrication shop cutting up so steel and welding together a different lifting frame to fit and help lift the piping of the cylinders...The second pair of cylinders took us 5 hours to finish and we called it a day after that, I was very tired and my head is sore, lifting my head too fast and busted it on a hydraulic valve above me, kept bleeding slightly for a couple hours and have a big knot on the top of my head now...The fellow working with me was just as dirty and oily as me, we worked together great today, I followed his lead, he's quite a smart guy and was not shy to work and get dirty...We had 3 guys down at the base of the machinery waiting our instructions, getting us tools we needed and worked the hydraulic pumps draining down the cylinders...We must have pumped over a 900 gallons of hydraulic fluid out of the machine and into clean steel drums to reuse and re-pump back into it when our work is done...I'm glad I have tomorrow off work to sleep in, and I am need of some rest...The owner of the company didn't want to pay our helpers double time on Sunday to continue doing this repair work and we only finished 4 out of 14 today, so we will be resuming this task on Monday early in the morning about 4 or 5 am...I'm salary pay not hourly so I don't get paid for overtime...
