Deadly Wuhan Coronavirus

Well... I see this as inevitable. As global population rises, it gives rise to the things that can destroy us.

Viruses are just one of the shitty things that are increased as over population occurs.

Population is growing way faster right now than the things that cull it down, so we have not reached critical population yet, but eventually, the population will crash.

Hmm, I like your optimism, I do, But I tend to see it as this was completely avoidable if China wasn't so damned nasty.. They Knew how Dangerous those wet markets were, They were even shut down once before this coronavirus For the same damned thing, They spread Sars to Singapore in 02-04. killing 146 people, This happened once before, but it was contained before it spread globally. That's why so many people are so upset. And so many others are calling them racist. Because, Short And Sweet, This is Chinas Fault. They, Knowing the dangers, Did this. And I tell you what. People can scream racist all they want. It will be a long damned time before the rest of the world is copacetic with China again. They disregarded public health and safety regulations so a very small 1 percent of China who can afford to eat Shark fins and Batwings could eat exotic foods.

This is unquestionably Chinas bad. And they will have a lot to answer for when this is all said and done.

As the number of coronavirus cases rises, why is Italy being hit so hard?

The country of Italy is on lockdown as the number of cases of COVID-19, the official name for the novel coronavirus, soars.

With more than 10,000 cases and counting, Italy has the second-highest reported death toll and number of confirmed infected cases, behind only China.

With 630 deaths, Italy’s death toll is significantly higher than the next three hardest-hit nations combined, with deaths in Iran, France and South Korea totaling under 380.

So what has put Italy and its people at higher risk for severe disease? The answer is multifaceted.

To start, part of the answer may lie in the age distribution of Italy's population. Italy has an older population with a greater percentage of adults over the age of 65 than the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control cautions that older adults may be at risk for more serious COVID-19 illness.

Data from China, where the majority of COVID-19 deaths have occurred, shows that about 80% of adults that have died were over the age of 60.

"We do know that the mortality rate associated with coronavirus infection is increased in those aged 60 years and older, and increased each decade thereafter," said Dr. Sarah Banks, an infectious disease physician at The Hospital of Central Connecticut. "We also know that underlying medical conditions also play a role in morbidity and mortality -- however to what degree is still being looked at."

Another risk factor may relate to smoking. COVID-19 is a respiratory disease that can lead to pneumonia, respiratory failure and, in the worst cases, death. Smoking is known to impair lung function and the immune system, contributing to more severe respiratory illnesses. A recent study suggests that more than 21% of Italians are smokers, compared to less than 14% in the U.S.

An additional risk factor could be related to local customs. The CDC has urged the use of social distancing as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19 -- but prior to this outbreak, the common custom in Italy was to greet friends and loved ones with a kiss on both cheeks.

"We do know that the virus is transmitted from person to person through droplets and possibly through contaminated surfaces," said Banks. "Social isolation is certainly being advocated by many experts around the globe in an effort to curb the spread of the virus."

Dr. Banks said that a final reason the mortality rate in Italy appears to be so high could be statistical.

"If asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic patients are not being tested, this will also skew the numbers we are seeing and increase the rates of adverse outcomes," she said.

Experts say it's difficult to predict if the U.S. will fare better than Italy as the virus runs its course.

"Based on the numbers that we are seeing from various countries, it does appear that the U.S. is behind several other countries in the number of cases that are being tested here," Banks said.

"If we are unable to make an accurate diagnosis due to limited testing availability, this will certainly skew the numbers that we are seeing. As commercialized testing is being rolled out currently, I think we will see a shift in these numbers."

Finland is closing down in the coming week for at least a month, all schools, universities, libraries, meetings etc. Borders will be closed, there will be no one coming into the country without escort into the quarantine or leaving. Ive not seen anything like this.

What are they not saying?

Not sure it is worth shutting the whole world economy down, especially when this is going to inevitably spread again as soon as things pick back up.

Ahhhh... ok... I understand the issue now...
Most ICU beds with respirators are already in use by Patients with other health issues.

In NY, there are only 600 of those available...

Yeah... hospitals can easily be overwhelmed at this rate.

We simply are not prepared for this virus.

Just listened to the press conference. I think I spontaneously learned to speak Klingon in the beginning of it. The Donald had a few keynotes he banged away on and I couldn't help howling at the TV and rolling around on the floor in fits. In that setting he sucks.

But it ended much better. A few apparently credible people on hand to speak also, Thank God. They say to hunker down 15 days. Self-isolate.

Sounds like there is an incredible amount of intestinal detail to get the federal system to react quickly to a crisis, but once it does it can bring quite a lot to bear. What I got was that the emergency measures allow what's needed to come through normal supply chains whether it's equipment, tests, ventilators etc. If a state or other local official can get what they need faster through their own suppliers then go ahead. We'll see.

Don't know what the hell we'll do. Probably hunker down. We'll see about that too.

Colorized images illustrate how doctors and nurses fought to save Spanish Flu sufferers in 1918... as the world relies on medical heroes to save it from coronavirus a century later

The haunting photos depict life during the Spanish flu outbreak after the First World War, which killed 20million to 50million people. It shows a child standing in front of a theatre (top left) shuttered due to the virus, two women wearing face masks to protect themselves in America (bottom right) and community halls turned into makeshift hospitals at Camp Funston, Kansas (bottom left) and San Francisco, California (top right). They may serve as a warning for today's coronavirus outbreak, which has rapidly spread across the world.

Number of corona cases in Finland may be 20-30 times higher than official count

The only people being tested in Finland now are the seriously ill and those in risk groups, as well as social and healthcare workers.

The number of people with coronavirus infections in Finland may be 20-30 times higher than has so far been confirmed, according to the Director-General of the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) Markku Tervahauta. He was interviewed on Yle Radio 1’s current affairs programme Ykkösaamu on Monday morning.

As of Monday morning, 241 cases of the Covid-19 disease caused by the new coronavirus had been confirmed in Finland. However not all suspected cases are being tested any longer, so the actual number of infections is likely to be much higher.

The only people being tested in Finland now are the seriously ill and those in risk groups, as well as social and healthcare workers.

“Testing is focused on the kinds of symptoms and individuals where it is important to know whether it is in fact corona,” Tervahauta said.

Projected infection numbers have been modelled through computer simulations based on data from other countries. Tervahauta said that these estimates vary greatly due to national variations in how infections are being tracked.

Tervahauta said it is also becoming difficult to trace possible chains of exposure. Most cases confirmed in Finland have still been linked to travel.

“It’s likely that there will be confirmed cases where these chains can no longer be identified. At that point there will be far more infection within society than has been confirmed by testing,” Tervahauta said.

Britain shuts down: Boris Johnson tells people to work from home, keep out of pubs and clubs and to stop ALL 'non-essential' social contact for 12 weeks after being warned deaths 'could hit 260,000' without action - as number of dead leaps 20 to 55

Boris Johnson warned that the coronavirus was now in a phase of rapid spread across the UK, with London seeing a particular surge, and it was time to take radical action to stop the NHS being swamped (pictured: the PM, centre; the latest guidance, left; and the soaring virus numbers, right). Everyone should avoid contact that is not absolutely necessary - with restaurants, bars and cinemas and travel off limits, and an end to large gatherings. Admitting that the squeeze could last 12 weeks or even longer, Mr Johnson acknowledged he was 'asking a lot'.

Entire households should self-isolate for two weeks if one person has been showing symptoms, and older people should prepare to stay away from risks for months to come. He said that meant 'you should not go out, even to buy food or essentials'. But unlike New York - where all bars and restaurants have been compelled to close by 8pm local time tonight - Mr Johnson said he would rely on businesses and Britons to follow guidance. Mr Johnson also said he was not yet ordering schools to be closed, saying he still believed it could make matters worse.

At a dramatic press conference in Downing Street, as the UK coronavirus death toll spiked to 55, the PM said: 'If necessary, you should ask for help from others for your daily necessities. If that is not possible, you should do what you can to limit your social contact when you leave the house to get supplies.'
