Man Arrested for Crashing Truck into Easter Island Moai Statue - Coast to Coast AM
A Chilean man in considerable legal trouble after he crashed his truck into one of Easter Island's sacred Maoi statues. The shocking incident reportedly occurred this past Sunday when the unnamed driver plowed into a platform that held one of the iconic and mysterious monuments. As one can imagine, the unfortunate episode, which may have been intentional, has sparked an outcry on the island.

Camilo Rapu, who heads the Mau Henua community which oversees the care and conservation of the statues declared that "something like this isn’t just dreadful, it’s an offense against a living culture that has spent the last few years fighting to regain its historic and archaeological heritage." This sentiment was echoed by the mayor of Easter Island, Pedro Edmunds Paoa, who lamented that the damage caused by the crash is "incalculable."

He went on to call for stricter regulations when it comes to allowing vehicles near the sacred statues in order to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. As for the motorist who created the mess, he was arrested shortly after the crash and charged with damaging a national monument. One assumes that he will likely face a harsh punishment, especially if it can be confirmed that he committed the act deliberately.

Rolling in toilet paper - Australian family over-orders coveted commodity

Untitled1.png

An Australian family is rolling in a much-coveted commodity after mistakenly ordering 48 boxes instead of 48 rolls of toilet paper online.

That works out at 2,304 toilet paper rolls for Haidee Janetzki and her family at a time when panic buying due to the coronavirus outbreak has caused major grocers in Australia to restrict supplies to a pack a person.

Janetzki thought she had placed her regular order from online retailer Who Gives a Crap last month and failed to notice the massive credit card bill until the pallets were delivered to her home in southern Queensland state.

How did she feel about the accidental purchase?

“Gobsmacked, confused and like a bit of an idiot,” Janetzki said.

Janetzki’s husband Chris went on social media to detail both the “exciting day” the toilet paper arrived, and Janetzki sitting on a ‘throne’ made from the boxes and decorated with different rolls on Wednesday, holding a staff in one hand and with a crown on her head, both made with toilet paper rolls.

“I’m relieved my friends and family don’t have to worry about it,” said Janetzki, when asked how she felt about the toilet paper demand Australia was facing.

Chris said they had worked out that it would take their family 12 years to get through the huge order. Instead, they have decided to sell some boxes in a fundraiser, at the same price at which they bought them.

“We are flying high, we are sitting pretty, we are loaded with toilet paper,” Chris said in the Facebook post on Wednesday that has since gone viral.

For some reason I'm suspicious that it wasn't a mistake. They may be engaging in profiteering.

Hard Hat Lost in Mississippi River Found in Ireland Five Years Later

A hard hat that was lost in the Mississippi River back in 2005 is set to be reunited with its owner after the headgear was found thousands of miles away on a beach Ireland earlier this month. The strange saga began five years ago as Matthew Bonnette was working along the iconic river in the community of Belle Chasse and his protective gear, which sported a custom purple and gold paint job as well as a Louisiana State University decal, fell into the raging waters presumably never to be seen again.

However, by way of a remarkable series of events, the colorful hard hat will soon be back in his hands. That's because a beachcomber in Ireland named Liam McNamara stumbled upon the headgear sitting in the sand on a beach in the seaside village of Fanore. Intrigued by its eye-catching color scheme and decals, the man posted images of the discovery on a Facebook page devoted to such curious finds.

Amazingly, a member of the group noticed that the hard hat was emblazoned with a sticker for the International Union of Operating Engineers and a specific locality. They subsequently contacted the union, who put out a call to its members and, in turn, Bonnette was made aware that his hard hat had been found approximately 4,300 away from where he lost it. McNamara now plans to send the hard hat back to its owner in Louisiana.

Possum tail mystery leaves commuters baffled - again

YKKX6IUJ45GXRJ4FMD6MEO6PBA.jpg

An unsolved mystery that left commuters puzzled back in 2015 as come back to haunt them.

It's the mystery of the severed possum tail – hundreds of them – littered over roads in the central and far north of the North Island. Commuters have taken to Facebook to share photos and discuss possible explanations.

Sightings of tails have been reported in locations around the North Island, including Ohakune and Mangaweka, Te Awamutu, Dome Valley, Kaitaia and as far north as Te Kao and Pukenui.

On Facebook, some believe the tails were deliberately placed in regular intervals along the road and could be an act of protest. Others on Facebook think they could have just blown off the back of a truck.

Todd Maclaine, from Ahipara, says he spotted tails all the way from the Mangamuka Gorge in Kaitaia to Orewa in Auckland. "It was a very weird sight," he says. "We were very confused."

Narelle Dinsdale from Ruawai spotted piles of tails dotted through Ruawai township, while Lesley Blackmore followed a trail of tails from Ohakune to Mangaweka.

Blackmore says: "At first we thought they might have been some type of plant [. . .] and then we thought perhaps they were furry hedgehogs." Hamilton's Kelly Anne Spriggs spotted tails on the way to Hamilton Airport, and thought they were dead rats. "[They were] all over the road, hundreds of them."

The NZ Herald reported the same incident happening in 2015, with Labour Weekend commuters spotting thousands tails all the way from Auckland to Dargaville.

Theories at the time included a possum culler taking tails as proof for a large payment but losing them on the way or a form of elaborate protest.

Vicar catches on fire during online sermon

In a recently uploaded video clip, Reverend Stephen Beach of St Budeaux Parish Church had been recording an introduction to his sermon when, having leaned a little too close to an arrangement of candles on the table beside him, he inadvertantly set his clothes on fire.

"Well, welcome back to our last part of our online worship experience from St Budeaux Parish Church," he can be heard saying before uttering what is perhaps the most understated realization of being set on fire that you're ever likely to hear...

"Oh dear I've just caught fire. Oh my word. Ha."

Fortunately he noticed quickly enough to be able to pat out the flames with his hand and was not thought to have sustained any injuries during the incident.

"My uncle is the vicar of St Budeaux Parish," his niece, Laura Evans, wrote on Twitter.

"Last night he gave his online sermon and things got a bit hot under the (dog) collar."

If it were spontaneous human combustion that just might be enough to get me going back to church.

These 'alien eggs' are not what they seem

news-alien-eggs.jpg

Images showing a field full of objects resembling eggs from the 'Alien' movie franchise have recently gone viral.

The pictures, which were posted up on Twitter by a farm worker from Japan, show rows of 'eggs' sitting on the ground in a field with white tendrils protruding from the bottom of them.

It goes without saying that these weird objects bear more than a passing resemblance to the alien eggs first encountered by the crew of the Nostromo in Ridley Scott's iconic 1979 science-fiction horror movie Alien which starred Sigourney Weaver as protagonist Ellen Ripley.

Fortunately however, the 'eggs' are in no danger of spawning facehuggers - they are in fact Chinese cabbages growing in a field on a farm in Japan.

The reason they look the way they do is because they have been left to wither in the winter air.

"At this time, be careful with the 'alien eggs' in the field because they are Chinese cabbage," the uploader - @dAiTaI0524 - wrote alongside the images.

It didn't take long for his Tweet to rack up tens of thousands of views.

Arkansas woman murdered by same person who murdered her mother 23 years ago

Almost 23 years after an Arkansas mother was murdered by a 16-year-old, the convicted killer allegedly killed her daughter, police said. Deputies from the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office responded to a call on Wednesday at the historical Snowden House in Horseshoe Lake where they saw a possible suspect fleeing the property.

"He was observed going under the water and never came back up." Police located "a possible suspect who jumped from an upstairs window and ran to a vehicle that he drove across the yard and got stuck in the yard at the Snowden house, the suspect then jumped from the car and ran and jumped into the lake," according to a post from the sheriff office's Facebook page. "He was observed going under the water and never came back up."

Authorities found the body of 63-year-old Martha McKay inside the house and the alleged killer's body was recovered from the water. Both bodies were sent to the state's medical examiner's office to determine the cause and manner of death. Police identified the alleged killer as 39-year-old Travis Lewis who was on parole since 2018 for the September 1996 murder of McKay's mother and another relative.

Lewis, who was 16 at the time and tried as an adult for the murders, alleged killed McKay inside the same crime scene from 23 years ago, police said.
