I have been looking at the daily new case graphs for various western countries, after first noticing something in the British reporting of this on Public Health England's dashboard:
Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS
There was a pronounced dip in reported cases on the 22nd of March. It occurs to me that it was a Sunday. So I looked at graphs for other countries and noticed that many of them had Sunday dips (or Saturday dips, as in the US, or both days in the case of Germany), despite the fact that the overall trend is exponentially upwards in each case. So it looks like the authorities in many places are making less of an effort to report cases on Sundays, likely due to staffing issues. This is reminiscent of studies which have shown that there tend to be worse outcomes for those who have surgery on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
I don't wish to sound like I am whinging as I am not directly contributing to the fight against the spread of the virus, and people need time off, even if they are involved with it. It is just an interesting observation, and something to consider when reading reports of new case counts. If a news outlet reports a dip, you might first ask yourself whether it is weekend data, before getting your hopes up about the actual trajectory of the epidemic.
