Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Made Bold UFO Claim In His Final Interview

A retired Air Force official in charge of one of its most famous UFO research efforts said before his death last year that the effort may have been scuttled not because it was fruitless, but just the opposite.

In a clip from the new documentary “The Phenomenon,” Lt. Col. Robert Friend pointed to the sudden closure of Project Blue Book in 1969.

“Which would suggest what?” he asked before answering his own question: “That they knew what it was.”

James Fox, the film’s director added: “Or didn’t know what it was.” But Friend, who led Project Blue Book from 1958-1963, persisted. “Also the other way,” Friend replied with a telling grin. “That they did know what it was.”

Officially, the project was shuttered despite some 700 open cases because it “no longer can be justified either on the ground of national security or in the interest of science.” But Friend, who died last year at the age of 99, suggested in his last interview that the shutdown could have been for another reason:

Friend, who was one of the Tuskegee Airmen during WWII and the only Black leader of Project Blue Book, heading it during the civil rights movement, was originally skeptical of claims that aliens had ever made the long trip to Earth.

“Do I believe that we have been visited? No, I don’t believe that,” he told HuffPost in 2012. “And the reason I don’t believe it is because I can’t conceive of any of the ways in which we could overcome some of these things: How much food would you have to take with you on a trip for 22 years through space? How much fuel would you need? How much oxygen or other things to sustain life do you have to have?”

However, Friend also called for more study and said he believes there could be life elsewhere.

“I think that anytime there’s a possibility of scientific pay dirt from studying these phenomena, that yes, it would be much better if the government or some other agency was to take on these things and to pursue the scientific aspects of it,” he said.

More recent revelations indicate that the U.S. government’s interest in UFOs didn’t end with Project Blue Book but have continued in other forms, much of which is detailed in “The Phenomenon.”

Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said in the film that the federal government has been covering up UFOs and that most of the evidence “hasn’t seen the light of day.”

So is there any of this where they are not beating the same old horse? I have not seen it and don't plan too unless there is some kind of ground breaking shit in it.

You might be waiting a long time for a movie like that, however the phenomenon is well done and has some good new tidbits of information along with some cases we are familiar with...Its not a boring movie, unless perhaps you watch it five or six times lol...

I admit I didn’t watch the Phenomenon movie. I just keep thinking back to a couple of facts. Bill Clinton said he wanted to know two things when he got to the Presidency. Who killed JFK and he wanted the truth about UFOs. He was stonewalled on both topics.

Donald Trump, who has to have the loosest lips of any President has said he couldn’t say anything about the UFO subject. If those two can’t get to the bottom of things, how do we expect others in the government and outside of it to tell us the so-called “truth.”

When asked recently his instant response was how incredible our military is. Curious

Can I get an amen from the congregation on this one! Thats what has always stymied me.. A sitting US President is not told about UFOs/Aliens so what makes these people making these documentaries think they are going to change! Fact of the matter is until you get an overwhelming majority of the US public to start asking questions it will stay the way it is...

Most of these people screaming "disclosure" are conspiracy theorists with an axe to grind against the government using the "disclosure" issue, if you can call it that as a way to say the government lies about everything..Which I am sure they do....But change has not came in 70+ years and a few poorly made documentaries and a drug crazed rock star are not going to change anything........

No takers on this?

Don't want to hear what the man who made that cool documentary said about it? Nothing dramatically revelatory but i think I may give it a second go around. The film too.

I think perhaps that some presidents have seen information /evidence and some have not. Many are enthusiastic about getting to the bottom of it and then when they are in office they are stymied or do learn about it and will not talk about it; it seems to me that some have been traumatized by the knowledge. I think Carter and G.W. Bush were let in on the facts, while Clinton was not --just a guess. Trump (I'll avoid describing how I feel about the guy), made the staged interview with his grinning son, and said a lot of people would "like to see it" and "it's very interesting"... (Did that right after there was some talk of the military escorting him out of the White House at the end of his term). It was basically a threat to the military: I can expose your big secret. This after the Air Force spent so much time and energy coming up with "Case Closed". So... He is strongly implying that he knows more, the report is wrong or a lie, and there is a "Thing"...

I caught that too. Glad you heard it. The question was about UFOs and his instant response was about our amazing military and hardware. I don't really put anything into statements like that or the ones from Hillary, but it did make me stop what I was doing and look at it again. Very curious.

It seems like presidents in the know are not Democrats.. Perhaps because the evidence is in the hands of private companies working to create weapons... And don't want the secret out --that would be the only thing restraining the current president..

I can’t envision a scenario where the military or defense industry would ever tell Trump about possible technology gleaned from an alien race. If Trump blabbed about that information his life wouldn’t last 5 minutes.

That's what I would (used to) think --and that might be why he hasn't had a second Roswell press conference. Anything seems possible these days --perhaps he had to know because of recent events with military interactions. It was the knowing grin and expression on his son's face as he was taping it, that got to me.

No..Because with his mouth the entire globe would hear about it on Twitter! Trump is probably the only vampire on the Hill that is more mouth than bite.

I finally watched the “Phenomenon” documentary. It was a well done movie. The best sequence in my mind was towards the end. The incident with the children in Zimbabwe taking place in 1994. Their comments when they reunited after 20 years were quite telling. Definitely worth watching.
