Where did you get that 90% from? The numbers I have seen are just over 60% no matter which vaccine it is. And really, the vaccines have not been used long enough to even have an accurate estimation of effectiveness.
I said "up to around", meaning "not more than". This document produced by Public Health England (our equivalent of the US CDC) indicates that the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has an estimated real-world effectiveness of 85-89% from 14 days after the second dose (pg 10).

Relative to the higher baseline risk seen during days 4-9, the odds ratio reaches 0.30 (95% CI 0.22 -0.41 ) equivalent to a vaccine effectiveness of 70%. From 7 days after a second dose of BNT162b2 the odds ratio was 0.21 (95 % CI 0.14-0.32) and then 0.15 (9 5% CI 0.11 -0.21 ) from 14 days after the second dose, indicating vaccine effectiveness of 85%. Relative to the higher baseline risk seen during days 4-9, the odds ratio reaches 0.11 (95% C I 0.07 -0.1 5 ) equivalent to a vaccine effectiveness o f 89 %.

My friend said she is scheduled for a Johnson & Johnson vaccine today. It makes me glad to know those are available in Albuquerque.

I found it curious that the well known Flu seemed to have plummeted to near zero numbers..with many suspecting they were diagnosed as covid..and now we have reports that prior flu vaccinated folx become resistant to covid..
Study finds link between flu shots and protection from Covid-19 infection, but scientists don’t understand why

A new study by researchers in Michigan found a strange and somewhat inexplicable link between flu vaccination and the reduced risk and severity of Covid-19 infection.
The scientists pored over medical records from more than 27,000 patients tested for Covid-19 up to and including July 2020.
Of the 27,201 participants in the study, those who had received their influenza vaccine in the previous year were less likely to test positive for the coronavirus than their flu-jab-free counterparts, with 1,218, or 4.5%, testing positive, in line with national averages.
After controlling for demographic variables such as ethnicity, race, gender, age, and underlying medical conditions, only 4% of flu vaccine recipients tested positive for Covid-19, but that number rose to 4.9% positive cases in the unvaccinated cohort.
While the difference between the two groups may appear to be rather modest, it accounts for a 24% reduction in the odds of testing positive for coronavirus, which is not to be sniffed at.
The reason for this statistically significant discrepancy is still something of a mystery, and may not be because of any medical reason, but instead, the result of more responsible lifestyle choices on the part of the individuals concerned, though this has yet to be definitively proven.
“It is possible that patients who receive their flu vaccine are also people who are practicing more social distancing and following CDC guidelines,” says cardiologist Marion Hofmann Bowman of the University of Michigan.
“However, it is also plausible that there could be a direct biological effect of the flu vaccine on the immune system relevant for the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.”
One possible explanation may be something called ‘trained immunity,’ via which patients who have previously been exposed to unrelated pathogens have a more ‘primed’ immune system that is ready and able to fight off a new pathogen, with varying degrees of success. The cross-reactivity of vaccines is an area of great interest, but will require years of research before any definitive causal links can be proven.
Similar results have been borne out in previous studies from around the world, but within the Michigan cohort at least, Covid-19 patients who had received their flu vaccine in the previous year were less likely to require hospitalization and ventilation.

That was an interesting read about flu shot protection against covid, never heard of that before...

The flu is way less contagious than covid so its not surprising that there are little to no flu cases this past winter with all the mask wearing and social distancing...My mother was concerned about getting the flu shot after getting the covid vaccine recently...I mentioned to her that she is still staying home all the time and wearing masks that personally I wouldn't worry about getting the flu shot, I didn't think she needed it but thats just my opinion, she should decide for herself or talk to her doctor first...

Europe warns hospitals at ‘breaking point’ as third Covid wave hits

European governments have warned that their hospitals are at risk of being overwhelmed by Covid-19 cases as leaders struggle to get a grip on the pandemic after a week of ill-conceived lockdown measures and recriminations over the EU’s slow vaccine rollout. German health authorities on Friday warned that the third wave of coronavirus infections could be the worst, pushing intensive care units to “breaking point”. Lothar Wieler, head of the Robert Koch Institute, the government agency leading the fight against the pandemic, said stopping the wave was impossible but he called on people to reduce contacts to prevent spiralling infection rates.

Mexican government admits country's true COVID death toll is 321,059 - almost 60% higher than previously reported

Mexico's government acknowledged Saturday that the country's true death toll from the coronavirus pandemic now stands at 321,059, almost 60 per cent more than the official test-confirmed number of 201,429. Mexico does little testing, and because hospitals were overwhelmed, many Mexicans died at home without getting a test. The only way to get a clear picture is to review 'excess deaths' and review death certificates.

On Saturday, the government quietly published such a report, which found there were 294,287 deaths linked to COVID-19 from the start of the pandemic through February 14. Since February 15 there have been an additional 26,772 test-confirmed deaths.

The higher toll would rival that of Brazil, which currently has the world's second-highest number of deaths. But Mexico's population of 126 million is far smaller than Brazil's 211 million. The new report also confirms just how deadly Mexico's second wave in January was.

As of the end of December, excess death estimates suggested a total of about 220,000 deaths related to COVID-19 in Mexico. That number jumped by around 75,000 in just a month and a half.

Also suggestive were the overall number of 'excess deaths' since the pandemic began, around 417,000. Excess deaths are determined by comparing the deaths in a given year to those that would be expected based on data from previous years.

A review of death certificates found about 70.5 per cent of the excess deaths were COVID-19 related, often because it was listed on the certificates as a suspected or contributing cause of death. But some experts say COVID-19 may have contributed to many of the other excess deaths because many people couldn't get treatment for other diseases because hospitals were overwhelmed.

Former President Felipe Calderón wrote in his Twitter account Saturday that 'more than 400,000 Mexicans have died, above the average for previous years ... probably the highest figure in the world'.

The United States leads the world with more than 548,000 deaths from the virus and more than 30 million cases.

Worldwide, more than 2 million people have died of COVID-19.

That is so weird that they are having problems since the "Pfizer" vaccine is actually designed and produced by a german company called BionTech. What is the deal with that?
