Distracted nurse gives woman 6 doses of COVID vaccine in a single shot

A 23-year-old Italian woman who was mistakenly given six doses of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine all at once was released from a hospital on Monday without having suffered any apparent adverse reactions, local health authorities said. The incident occurred on Sunday morning at the Noa Hospital in Massa, in Tuscany.

The patient was kept under observation for approximately 24 hours in the hospital's emergency room. Doctors said she was given fluids, and anti-inflammatory and fever medications as preventative measures.

"This person at this time will certainly not have side effects," said Dr. Antonella Vicenti, director of infectious diseases at Noa Hospital. She said Pfizer studies had shown that people who receive up to 5-times the normal dosage did not suffer any consequences. She also said that patients in Israel and Germany who had accidentally been given 5-times the usual dosage also showed no adverse reactions.

"The patient did not have fever and did not have any pain except for pain at the inoculation site, nor any other manifestations," said Vincenti. "She was a bit frightened, thus we preferred to keep her here until this morning."

Vincenti said it remained to be seen what long-term effects, if any, the overdose might have on the young woman's antibody levels, and thus her immune response to the coronavirus. She said the hospital would test her blood regularly to monitor her immune response and determine whether she should still get the scheduled second dose after a number of weeks.

Dr. Tommaso Bellandi, director of patient security for the northwest Tuscany health authority, said the accident occurred because the nurse had an attention lapse. "This is something that should never happen," he said. "Unfortunately, due to our limits as human beings, as well as organizational limits, these things can happen."

He said the hospital had launched an investigation to review safety procedures.

Bellandi explained that each vial of the Pfizer vaccine contains six doses, which must be individually extracted and placed in separate vials, where they are then diluted. The nurse administering the vaccine on Sunday mistakenly injected all of the liquid from an undiluted vial.

"She thought that the dilution had taken place," said Bellandi. "They are both transparent liquids of the same density. Unfortunately, this contributed to the error," he said.

The nurse immediately realized her error and alerted the patient as well as the attending physician, who at once began monitoring the young woman for adverse reactions. Local health authorities and the patient's family were immediately notified, too. Bellandi said the incident occurred on an extremely busy day, during a period in which health workers were trying to administer as many vaccine doses as possible.

"I'm not trying to justify something that we hoped would never happen," he said. "We are extremely regretful, especially towards the young woman." Bellandi said the nurse and the attending doctor were "heartbroken" at what had occurred, and a psychologist described them as "traumatized" by the event.

Indian doctors warn against cow dung as COVID cure

Indian doctors warn against cow dung as COVID cure

Doctors in India are warning against the practice of using cow dung in the belief it will ward off COVID-19, saying there is no scientific evidence for its effectiveness and that it risks spreading other diseases.

The coronavirus pandemic has wrought devastation on India, with 22.66 million cases and 246,116 deaths reported so far. Experts say actual numbers could be five to 10 times higher, and citizens across the country are struggling to find hospital beds, oxygen, or medicines, leaving many to die for lack of treatment.

In the state of Gujarat in western India, some believers have been going to cow shelters once a week to cover their bodies in cow dung and urine in the hit will boost their immunity against, or help them recover from, the coronavirus.

In Hinduism, the cow is a sacred symbol of life and the earth, and for centuries Hindus have used cow dung to clean their homes and for prayer rituals, believing it has therapeutic and antiseptic properties.

"We see ... even doctors come here. Their belief is that this therapy improves their immunity and they can go and tend to patients with no fear," said Gautam Manilal Borisa, an associate manager at a pharmaceuticals company, who said the practice helped him recover from COVID-19 last year.

He has since been a regular at the Shree Swaminarayan Gurukul Vishwavidya Pratishthanam, a school run by Hindu monks that lies just across the road from the Indian headquarters of Zydus Cadila (CADI.NS), which is developing its own COVID-19 vaccine.

As participants wait for the dung and urine mixture on their bodies to dry, they hug or honour the cows at the shelter, and practice yoga to boost energy levels. The packs are then washed off with milk or buttermilk.

Doctors and scientists in India and across the world have repeatedly warned against practising alternative treatments for COVID-19, saying they can lead to a false sense of security and complicate health problems.

"There is no concrete scientific evidence that cow dung or urine work to boost immunity against COVID-19, it is based entirely on belief," said Dr JA Jayalal, national president at the Indian Medical Association.

"There are also health risks involved in smearing or consuming these products - other diseases can spread from the animal to humans."

There are also concerns the practice could contribute to the spread of the virus as it involved people gathering in groups. Madhucharan Das, in charge of another cow shelter in Ahmedabad, said they were limiting the number of participants.

Assuming people have contracted the virus after being vaccinated, how many of them have had serious medical problems? I've received the Phizer vaccination and I still feel confident I made the right choice.

I don't blame Australia, it's a good decision...Over here in the US we are ready to get back to some normality whilst the government CDC seems to want to keep the country locked down and everyone in face diapers...Half the country are fully vaccinated and there's a large percentage of the unvaccinated who don't want the vaccine...So I say leave them be and return everything to normal, can't force someone to get a shot if they refuse, so put restrictions in place for the unvaccinated and move forward with opening things back to normal...I still wear a mask everywhere indoors in public but growing tired of wearing one...

Exactly! People have been vaccinated so we need to reopen the nation. There's no point in the face masks and the restrictions. I will be fully vaccinated in 2 weeks and I'm not in a high risk group. Most of the people I know have been fully vaccinated.

I don't think we have had enough time to know whether the vaccines are working or not. The governor of my state has opened business almost to capacity, however the state is not open. And any state or federal workers who travel out of the state still have to be quarantined after they return. I don't think that is a bad thing. It should be true for everyone in the state. Australia has the right idea. I agree with them even though it means we can't see our cousins in Perth until after 2022. They both have health issues and I want them to stay healthy. There is a lot to be learned from the flu pandemic of the early 20th century and the first versions of the flu vaccines in the 1970's. You can't count on the vaccine being fully effective yet. There is not enough data or time to know anything about any of them.

I work for the state gov in Virginia. It has recently become a blue state. Politicians go out of their way to pander to every possible liberal issue and voice. We will not return to the office for at least another couple of months and, even then, it will be a hybrid work schedule where we only go into the office once or twice a week. Everyone on my immediate team has had the vaccine. This whole thing is becoming a fiasco. The liberals have milked it for everything it's worth.

Never wore a mask in 56 years to guard against the flu and never have been vaccinated for the flu either and I've had the flu a total of 1 time in 56 years...If covid hits me like the flu now that I'm fully vaccinated then so be it, I'm fine with that but I'm growing increasingly not fine with continual mask wearing and lock downs...There's already been three times recently I simply forgot to put on the mask when going to the grocery store...No one gave me crap about it although I did feel bad about that because the people working in those stores have to wear one all day whilst working...I'm going back to work full time very soon now and I don't want to be wearing a mask all day...

My perspective is different and maybe because I was raised by germaphobes. My mother's dad died of a viral meningitis and my dad lost a relative to a bad infection so both my grandmothers were at war with germs. They both could have been rich if they had bought stock in the Clorox company they used so much of it. We are all compulsive hand washers and it makes sense to me that the mask is key to helping keep people healthy for a lot of reasons. It is not good to wear the same mask for 8 hours at work, they should be switched out every 3 or so hours but if you have to deal with the public you should be wearing a mask and washing your hands and anything anyone else touches often.

Now because of the Trump administration we have more pollution than we did before and that just makes things worse for everyone's respiratory system so the mask has another use, to keep your respiratory system clear of some of the pollution in the air. That is why people in China have been wearing masks for decades, because their government does not care if the air is breathable.

I was at Wal-Mart yesterday and walking through the parking lot towards the store entrance an older woman was pushing the grocery cart she was using towards the holding racks outside...I was crossing her path and saw she had a smaller cart which I prefer to use over the full size carts so I spoke up and said to her that I would take her cart from her if she didn't mind...Her eyes got as big as grapefruit lol, we were both wearing masks too but I guess she was freaked out because I wasn't worried about the cart being wiped down first lol...She handed me the cart and we both went on about our business...I think at this point being worried about handling something directly from others is overkill, it's the way things were before the pandemic and we need to get back to normal...If some people want to take extra precautions for themselves that's their choice but the entire country shouldn't be shackled to these restrictions any longer, IMO...

Forget all the pollution over the past decades, forget that China and India are the worst polluters in the world and continue to do so, let's blame Trump for it all...

I am not blaming Trump for it all, I am blaming the Trump administration for caving to the oil and chemical companies allowing the loosening and ignoring the anti pollution mandates. There is proof that pollution is worse in the last 4 years than it was before Trump took office. It is backsliding, and now the Biden administration and Congress, which allowed this crap, has to step up and reset all the rules that were trampled. Trump is a puppet, but things were allowed during his presidency that should not have been so he gets the blame like all presidents do.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not defending Trump, but using him as a scapegoat to blame all our woes on is no different than when Obama got blamed for everything when Trump was elected...People need to get out of this right vs left thinking and deal with our troubles together as Americans...

America’s Air Quality Worsens, Ending Years of Gains, Study Says
New data reveals that damaging air pollution has increased nationally since 2016, reversing a decades-long trend toward cleaner air.

U.S. air pollution is worsening after improving for years

The researchers say three factors could explain the increase in air pollution: stronger economic growth in recent years, an increase in wildfires and weakened federal "clean air" rules.
