Mars

Fratty and out of touch.

Every time someone talks about life on Mars I always think about the Bowie song that, BTW, was covered by Barbra Streisand. I've always believed this is one of his most underrated songs.

Evidence of life on Mars may have been erased

NASA's Curiosity rover has discovered that evidence of ancient life on the Red Planet may have been scrubbed. There's nowhere beyond the Earth more tantalizing in the search for evidence of ancient alien life than Mars - a world that was once very much like our own planet with oceans, lakes and rivers.

While today it is an arid, desolate place, scientists have long hoped that evidence of its watery past - and the organisms that may have thrived during that time - can still be found there.

Now though, a new study has revealed that at least some of the potential evidence of past life on Mars may have been erased through geological processes that may be common across the planet.

Clay is often seen as a valuable material in the search for evidence of life - both because it forms when rocky minerals weather away after contact with water and because it is also good at preserving microbial fossils.

When Curiosity recently took samples from ancient mudstone at the site of a dried-up lakebed, however, some of it contained significantly fewer clay minerals that would be expected.

Scientists now believe that brine - which is essentially very salty water - may have leaked into the clay layers and destabilized them, wiping away potential signs of biological life.

"We used to think that once these layers of clay minerals formed at the bottom of the lake in Gale Crater, they stayed that way, preserving the moment in time they formed for billions of years," said study lead author Tom Bristow.

"But later brines broke down these clay minerals in some places - essentially resetting the rock record."

Ingenuity Helicopter Spots Perseverance Rover on Surface of Mars

A cool image snapped by NASA's Ingenuity helicopter as it flew over Mars shows the Perseverance Rover roaming around on the surface of the Red Planet. The picture was reportedly taken during the craft's eleventh flight as it unfolded last Wednesday, August 4th. Sharing the photo online, NASA noted that the helicopter was documenting "boulders, sand dunes, and rocky outcrops prevalent in the 'South Seitah' region of Jezero Crater" and, in the process, caught a glimpse of the rover that delivered it to the Red Planet. "Ingenuity’s aerial images are awesome," marveled JPL engineer Robert Hogg, "but even better when you get to play 'Where's Perseverance?' with them."

For those who have been scouring the photo wondering where, exactly, the rover is, NASA helpfully explained where it can be found. "Just beyond South Seitah's dune field near the top of the image and just to the right of center is a bright white speck," the space agency indicated, "that's what a Mars rover looks like from about 1,600 feet away and 39 feet up." For those still stumped, the image below should help solve the mystery. While it may appear as just a dot in the picture, NASA also provided an enhanced version of the image (which can also be seen below) that zooms in on Perseverance and reveals some of the rover's details such as its wheels and remote sensing mast.

I need to say this again and will continue to do so periodically.

We put a goddamned helicopter on Mars.

We do a lot of stupid stuff, especially lately. But we did that

Ohio University Emeritus Professor Says Images Show Evidence of Life on Mars

Ohio University Emeritus Professor William Romoser decided to study and analyze a series of photographs taken from the surface of Mars by various NASA rovers. After a careful analysis of the photographic material gathered from the surface, the researcher found the evidence could likely point to possible traces of life on the surface of Mars.

The Emeritus professor revealed that some of the images seem to show insect-like and reptile-like forms, appearing to verify that life exists on Mars, according to a statement from the University of Ohio.

The Ohio entomologist argues that we already have more than enough evidence to confirm that there is life on Mars, and we can thank NASA’s rovers on the red planet.

This–unexpected–revelation comes from a researcher who is a specialist in arbovirology and general/medical entomology.

Dr. Romoser has spent several years analyzing the images from Mars, freely available on NASA’s website.

He revealed that during his search, he encountered evidence of a number of insect-like lifeforms which appear to be similar to bees. He also claims to have found reptile-like forms, both as fossils and living creatures.

Astronomers have long thought that the dust is brought into the inner solar system by a few of the asteroid and comet families that venture in from afar. But now, a team of Juno scientists argues that the planet Mars may be the culprit. An instrument aboard the Juno spacecraft serendipitously detected dust particles slamming into the spacecraft during its journey from Earth to Jupiter. The impacts provided important clues to the origin and orbital evolution of the dust, resolving some mysterious variations of the zodiacal light.
