Breathing support methods for Covid patients, such as CPAP machines, does not increase the risk of air or surface contamination with virus particles, two studies find

Non-invasive breathing support for COVID-19 patients does not increase the risk of air or surface contamination with virus particles, two new studies find. Researchers looked at patients who needed to use high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines to help them breathe. They found that, while the nose and throats of COVID-19 patients had high amounts of viral RNA, the air and surfaces around them did not.

Additionally, coughing played a much bigger role in the number of liquid droplets in the air - or aerosols - than either of the breathing methods did. The teams, both from the UK, say the findings provide evidence that neither of the methods should be categorized as 'aerosol generating procedures' and they should be more widely used for Covid patients struggling to breathe.

Researchers from the UK found that 21 of the 30 patients had detectable amounts of viral RNA in their noses and throats (far left) compared to just four out of 90 air samples (center left, center right and far right)

Additionally, compared to the amount of viral RNA in noses and throats far left), six out of 90 surface samples (center left, center right and far right) were found to be be contaminated

The studies looked at two methods of breathing used for Covid patients who don't need mechanical ventilation: HFNO and CPAP machines. HFNO uses nasal tubes or a mask to deliver oxygen at a high-flow rate to a patient in need of respiratory support. CPAP machines are most commonly used to treat sleep apnea. A hose connected to a mask or nosepiece delivers constant air pressure to the user to help him or her breathe.

Both are considered non-invasive procedures because they don't require intubation or sedation to deliver oxygen. Anecdotal reports have suggested that HFNO and CPAP machines generate high amounts of virus particles that contaminate the air and surfaces. But very few studies have specifically evaluated the effect of either breathing method on contamination.

Because of this, the two research teams set to out to look at the amount of air and surface contamination caused by HFNO and CPAP machines.

For the first study, published in The BMJ's Thorax, researchers from Queen's University Belfast, in Northern Ireland, and the University of Birmingham in England, looked at 30 hospitalized patients with COVID-19. All needed support to keep oxygen saturation levels, or the percentage of oxygen in the blood, at or above 94 percent. They were divided into three groups of 10 - HFNO, CPAP and supplemental oxygen therapy - and each had three air and surface samples collected from immediately around them.

Researchers found that 21 of the 30 patients had detectable amounts of viral RNA in their noses and throats, By comparison, just four out of 90 air samples, the equivalent of four percent, were contaminated with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid.

The second study found a single cough produced at least 10 times more aerosol than speaking or breathing as well as any of the machines

upload_2021-11-4_20-9-46.png

Meanwhile, just six out of 90 surface samples, or seven percent, were found to be be contaminated. The team says it knows its sample size of 30 was small and that larger studies are need to confirm the findings.

But the researchers conclude: 'The use of CPAP and HFNO to treat moderate/severe COVID-19 did not appear to be associated with substantially higher levels of air or surface viral contamination in the immediate care environment, compared with the use of supplemental oxygen.'

In a second study, also published in The BMJ's Thorax, a team at the University of Bristol looked at 30 patients. Eight of the patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 while the remaining 25 were healthy volunteers. Researchers measured aerosol emissions while breathing, speaking and coughing in a normal room and again while receiving CPAP and HFNO in an ultra-clean operating room.

Coughing generated the highest amount of aerosol with a single cough producing at least 10 times more aerosol than speaking or breathing. Additionally, the highest aerosol emissions came from a COVID-19 patient coughing compared to a healthy volunteer.

'In healthy volunteers, standard non-humidified CPAP is associated with less aerosol emission than breathing, speaking or coughing,' the authors wrote. 'Aerosol emission from the respiratory tract does not appear to be increased by HFNO.

'Although direct comparisons are complex, cough appears to be the main aerosol generating risk out of all measured activities.'

So then, what are the long term effects of this drug?...They don't know because they "stopped early" during the trial...Don't worry, it will be fine, what could go wrong?...

Can it be proven, or at least shown, that any action by any country including China, Russia, the UK, France, the US, etc., etc. - Including lockdowns, masks, social distancing, and now the vaccines - Has in fact stopped, or even slowed down the spread of Covid ???

Is there solid evidence that, as they say, most deaths and serious Covid infections are of unvaccinated people?

All I keep hearing on the news is about 'breakthrough infections'
and the uptick of infections in Russia, even though Russia had an early vaccine.

So the basic question is still - Is this virus really under control? Is the worst over? Or is it yet to come?

During the Spanish flu of a hundred years ago they say that cities that took some precautions were not as badly hit as those that didn't -- Still the second version that rose up a year after the first was much deadlier and was responsible for most of the deaths.

Back then they had no antiviral vaccines - But how much safer is the World today even with these vaccines that are already showing weakness in protective effects ???

England imposed its first lockdown the 23rd of March, 2020. One week earlier it had urged people to limit socialization and the attendance of mass gatherings, or visit restaurants, cinemas, and the like, and to work from home if possible. Prior to this lockdown, and this advice, there were multiple epidemics throughout the country, each in different stages. It had got started in some parts of the country earlier than in others. If left to transmit without outside influence, one would expect these epidemics to have peaked at different times. However, the peak in hospitalizations and deaths from all of the various regional epidemics were very nearly coincident, in early April. This suggests that the rate of transmission was arrested by a simultaneous change in people's behaviour. Whether that was from the lockdown, or from the early advice to change behaviour, we don't know. But there was clearly some imposed influence on the epidemics.

Subsequently, England has had a few more lockdowns. The most recent lockdown began in early January of this year. And then phases lifting of lockdown restrictions began in March and finished in July. The case rate in the population began increasing as the restrictions were lifted:

upload_2021-11-6_16-23-49.png

It peaked in July, and abruptly started to fall, this was coincident with the end of the school year. The new cases started to rise again before peaking in October of last month. This coincided with schools breaking up for the half-term holiday. So there does appear to one thing that can somewhat control the spread of the Delta variant: stopping kids going to school.

Deaths are certainly down, given the rate of spread, thanks to the rate of vaccination. It is untenable that we would have such a low death rate with such a high infection rate if not for the vaccines.

All I keep hearing on the news is about 'breakthrough infections'
and the uptick of infections in Russia, even though Russia had an early vaccine.
Russia was the first to release a Covid vaccine. However, it released the vaccine to the public before the completion of human trials in a bid to be the first (reminiscent of the early Soviet space programme, where they used to cut many corners with safety in a bid to achieve space 'firsts'). This led the Russian public to distrust the vaccine, and consequently Russia has a very low vaccination uptake.

Back then they had no antiviral vaccines
The very first vaccines were against the small pox virus, more than two hundred years ago.

I hope the worst is over for us in the US, but covid is wrecking havoc in other countries still, like China where the Delta variant is getting out of control fast, even with China's strict lockdowns and rules...There's been some conspiracy rumours that covid-19 was a test run for a more deadlier virus to emerge sooner rather than later and now with delta covid spreading like wildfire in China we may see a deadlier version of covid to rise...Rumours of course, but as they say, hope for the best and prepare for the worst...

I don't think these vaccines are working well at all, it seems the best immunity is through natural immunity, but I'd rather not suffer through being sick with Covid just to get immunity...I got the J&J shot, no booster and don't plan on getting a booster unless this pandemic turns much deadlier and so far it hasn't...I'm done with the shots, and still avoid large crowds and congested shops, I also haven't been wearing a mask either, for about 3 or 4 weeks now, no mask...

Gen. George Washington Ordered Smallpox Inoculations for All Troops

"
n late 1776, as Gen. George Washington led his troops through the opening battles of the American Revolution, it was not necessarily the enemy fighters who posed the biggest risk to the fledgling U.S. Army.

An estimated 90% of deaths in the Continental Army were caused by disease, and the most vicious were variants of smallpox, according to the U.S. Library of Congress.

That's why Gen. Washington made the controversial decision to order the mass inoculation of his soldiers, an effort to combat spread of the disease that was at the time a major deterrent to enlistments and posed the risk of debilitating his army and tipping the balance of power against America's first warfighters.

According to the U.S. Library of Congress's Science, Technology, and Business Division, the smallpox inoculations began Jan. 6, 1777, for all of Washington's forces who came through the then-capital of Philadelphia, and through Morristown, New Jersey, following the Battle of Princeton.

Smallpox is a potentially fatal disease that starts with fever and vomiting and an outbreak of ulcers in the mouth and a skin rash. The skin rash turns into highly contagious fluid-filled blisters. The fatality rate was very high.

Inoculations were far more primitive - and dangerous - than today's vaccinations. The most common method was to cut a person's skin and rub the minor incision with a thread or cloth contaminated with a less-virulent version of smallpox, which in this case was a strain known as "variola."........."

Highly-vaccinated Vermont has more COVID-19 cases than ever.

As Vermont reports higher than ever COVID-19 case rates, state health officials have been trying to understand why. How can a state that did so well during the first part of the pandemic — even garnering national recognition — be doing so much worse now?

"There is not one simple answer," said Vermont Health Commissioner Dr. Mark Levine during a news conference Tuesday. "But, there are clearly factors that have come together to create the situation that we're in now."

Slowing the spread is critical right now to prevent Vermont's hospitals from being overwhelmed with people sick with the virus, Levine said. He encouraged Vermonters to take the same preventative steps that have been preached throughout the pandemic: wearing masks, practicing physical distancing, staying home when sick and getting vaccinated.

"There's not one single solution to stop it," Levine said. "We do need to live with it, taking the simple and common sense actions for protecting one another as much as we can."

Don't eat the venison...

Over 80% Of Iowa Deer Sampled In Study Found To Have COVID-19

The coronavirus is widespread among white-tailed deer in Iowa, according to new research. Penn State University researchers and wildlife officials in Iowa found that over 80% of deer in their samples tested positive for the virus, showing that it’s spreading very rapidly. That’s for samples taken from April 2020 through January 2021.

There’s no evidence to suggest deer-to-human transmission, researchers said. According to the study, which has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, the COVID-19 transmissions amongst deer in Iowa “likely resulted from multiple human-to-deer spillover events and deer-to-deer transmission.”

Researchers said the findings show the need for a “robust and proactive” approach to understand the ecology and evolution of the virus. “In principle, SARS-CoV-2 infection of an animal host could result in it becoming a reservoir that drives the emergence of new variants with risk of spillback to humans,” the study said.

The findings come just days before Minnesota’s deer hunting season opener.

These kind of headlines like this one below are more or less fear-mongering to me, okay so the vaccines aren't as good as thought, in fact they appear to be causing many other non-covid related problems, some serious...Have you noticed how many sudden heart attacks have been in the news lately, coincidence?...Masks appear not to be 100% reliable for protection or else that would be all we needed, so a combination of things and wish me luck eh?...lol

I think at this point in the pandemic, is it a bad thing to suggest that we need to let herd immunity happen, let everyone do things each their own way,, quit forcing things on people and let natural immunity rise from all this mess....

...

‘Now is not the time for happy talk’: Experts warn the pandemic is far from over and urge people to combine vaccines with face masks and other measures

The big problem is with Covid directives and the government. I can’t believe much of what is being put forth by talking heads of the government. I am a firm believer that everyone should get the shots, if just to protect others. Some of the theories being put forth against Covid shots are pure nonsense.

One pro basketball player has put forth the theory that taking Covid shots is a Nazi scheme to make blacks slaves again!! People actually listen to this guy. When you have that kind of mentality how do you fight the stupidity of this nature?
