Deadly Wuhan Coronavirus

The media outlets are really ramping up the fear of this covid variant as if we're starting all over again...They should get more facts first and stop hyping up what is known and fear-mongering the population, Fauci is doing the same crap, a man in his position should know better...Be vigilant in case it is a deadly variant but not hysterical, because there is a good chance it is not deadly, just more contagious...

Blessing in disguise: Omicron variant may be 'very positive' news for the world if new Covid mutation kills off more lethal Delta coronavirus

Hospitals and GPs across Southern Africa are increasingly reporting that the symptoms of the aggressive new Covid strain Omicron are “unusual but very mild,” according to various media in South Africa this weekend.

Around 90 per cent of all new infections in the Johannesburg region are now caused by the Omicron strain but, so far, the Covid death rate and even hospital admissions appear not to be increasing significantly, local media report.

Some experts are therefore cautiously optimistic that – if Omicron turns out to be less lethal but more contagious and dominant than the Delta variant – the new mutation may actually be a blessing in the sky.

Where did I hear this before? Was it a year ago January when 'they' said for most people the symptoms are mild, even symptomless - for the original Covid19 - And wasn't it DT who was recorded on tape conversations saying he wanted to
'play it down' to avoid a panic?

So you can not worry - On the other hand maybe we should worry?
-They just said on the news testing positivity rates in South Africa are way up !

That doesn't necessarily equate hospitalization and deaths are way up, in fact South Africa claims there have been virtually no hospitalizations and no deaths from this new variant...Time will tell...

Sorry but I'm a bit sceptical of reports like this, a few days ago lots of people getting omicron covid but very mild, no hospitalizations, now suddenly western style reporting, singing the hysteria tunes of the West...

Has the Omicron wave begun? Covid cases in South Africa SOAR 403% in a week after scientists raised the alarm about variant as top doctor calls the TEN PERCENT positivity rate 'scary' - but 87% of those hospitalised are unvaccinated

Coronavirus cases in South Africa have soared by 403 per cent in a week, after the country's scientists sounded the alarm about the Omicron variant. Leading virologist Tulio de Oliveira described the surge in infections as 'scary' as he urged the public to get vaccinated and use face masks.

In the space of two weeks, the Omicron variant has sent South Africa from a period of low transmission to rapid growth of new confirmed cases. More than ten per cent of those tested for Covid across South Africa have tested positive, official data showed, as 4,473 cases were recorded on Tuesday - an increase of 92 per cent compared to the day before.

But scientists in the country have warned that the vast majority of people who end up being hospitalised with the Omicron variant are unvaccinated. De Oliveira said on Twitter: 'Goodness me! Scary increase of cases and positivity rate in South Africa. Please keep safe, use a mask and go for vaccination as 1000s of scientists in the world try to understand better.'

A total of 42,664 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, with 4,373 new cases reported, data from The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in South Africa revealed. That is a 92 per cent increase compared to the 2,273 cases recorded on Monday and a massive 403 per cent week-on-week increase, with 868 cases recorded last Tuesday. The number infections represents a 10.2 per cent positivity rate, which is the percentage of those tested who are infected with the virus.

While numbers of confirmed cases are still relatively low, they have been increasing at a high rate. The new spike started after some student parties in Pretoria. Numbers quickly jumped from a few hundred cases a day to thousands.

Biden administration is considering forcing all travelers returning to the US to quarantine for SEVEN DAYS to curb spread of COVID omicron variant - and may FINE people who flout it

The Biden administration is considering whether to force all travelers returning to the U.S. to quarantine for seven days to curb the spread of the potentially dangerous omicron variant - and may fine those who refuse, three federal health officials told the Washington Post. The potential quarantine mandate, which travelers would not be able to forgo even with a negative Covid test, comes as Biden deliberates his winter Covid strategy and would be the first time federal fines are linked to quarantine and testing measures for U.S. travelers.

Apparently in Austria, coming in feb covid vaccinations will become mandatory and they will fine people who will not take the vaccine, unless there is a health reason. For 7200 euros( 8,154 dollars) in max and repeatedly twice in year for that sum until taken. Pretty harsh.

What's all the fuss about? Most Omicron cases are 'mild' or show no symptoms at all and existing jabs should provide high protection against hospitalization and death, World Health Organization claims

Most Omicron cases are 'mild' and there is no evidence the new variant has any impact on vaccine effectiveness on serious illness, a World Health Organization official has claimed. A spokesperson for the global health agency said early data suggests the mutant strain is better at infecting people than Delta, even the fully vaccinated.

But there is no signal that existing vaccines will be any less effective at preventing hospitalisations and deaths.

It is the first official hint that the Omicron super-strain may not wreak as much havoc as initially feared.

Botswana today revealed that 85 per cent of its Omicron cases so far were asymptomatic and South African doctors say patients are presenting with milder symptoms.

Hospitalisations have surged in the South African epicentre of Gauteng in the last week, but only a quarter of its population is vaccinated.

For comparison, 70 per cent of people in the UK are double-jabbed and the figure is as high as 80 per cent in some European nations.

Last night, Israeli officials claimed that a booster dose of Pfizer’s vaccine provides up to 90 per cent protection against severe illness from Omicron.

But experts warn it will be at least two weeks until they have a better understanding of what impact the variant could have.

And SAGE, No10's scientific advisors, warned Britain should brace for a 'potentially very significant wave with associated hospitalisations' this winter if the worst estimates about Omicron turn out to be true

The trouble is there do not, as yet, appear to be any systematic scientific studies about Omicron, its symptomatology, or disease severity relative to Delta. There is a lot being written on the basis of what, at the moment, seem to be the subjective observations of a single South African medic. The suggestion that it is relatively mild would be welcome news if it turned out to be true, but we need to wait for reliable data before reaching that conclusion, and not an anecdote. For all we know at present, it may turn out to be as bad as, or worse than, Delta.

It seems to me on site observations can be a very accurate tell of the severity of omicron, if people are dropping dead then its deadly, if not then its likely not deadly...How many people have died from omicron specifically?...How many are hospitalized with serious issues from omicron?...

Germany locks down the unvaccinated: Angela Merkel says parliament will debate making shots MANDATORY as she bars the un-jabbed from non-essential shops and leisure facilities

Germany will lock down its unvaccinated citizens while parliament debates making jabs mandatory, Angela Merkel said as she threw her weight behind the move today.

The outgoing Chancellor said that un-jabbed people will soon be barred from non-essential shops and all cultural and leisure facilities, with only those who have got their shots or been infected with Covid allowed to enter.

The Bundestag will also begin debating a vaccine mandate as soon as possible with a view to making it law by February next year, Merkel added.

Speaking alongside incoming Chancellor Olaf Scholz who has also signalled his support for the move, she said: 'If I were in the Bundestag, I would vote for it.

'We all hoped that volunteering would be better accepted. [But] there is a vaccination gap that means... the health system is coming to the brink of overload.'

Covid has had an infection fatality rate of around 1% in most industrialized nations (who tend to suffer the worst due to the age distribution of their populations). In such a nation, you would need a random sample of around 100 infected before you would expect to witness a single death. I believe that the sample of infected witnessed by the South African medic who discovered the Omicron variant was a) very small and b) not random. Using South Africa as an indicator of the likely effect of the variant on our countries is probably not valid, due to the fact that South Africa's population is on the average very young.
