The flu epidemic has struck the entire mainland US at the same time and in similar levels for the first time ever as health officials warn the season could get worse.

Influenza activity is now widespread in all states except Hawaii with the deadly virus already claiming the lives of more than 85 adults and 20 children this flu season.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that two strains of influenza viruses are being reported across the country, including H3N2 and H1N1.

'This is a bad flu season,' said Dr Dan Jernigan, the director of the CDC's influenza branch. Flu is everywhere in the US right now. There's lots of flu in lots of places.

'This is the first year we had the entire continental US be the same color on the graph meaning there's widespread activity in all of the continental US at this point.'

WHAT ARE THE FLU STRAINS HITTING THE US THIS YEAR?

There are many different types of flu circulating around the world, but four main types are being seen, or are set to emerge, in America this winter.

H3N2 - Dubbed 'Aussie flu' after it struck Australia hard last winter, this strain is more likely to affect the elderly, who do not respond well to the current vaccine. This is one of the most common strains seen so far this winter.

H1N1 - This strain – known as 'swine flu' - is generally more likely to hit children, who respond well to vaccination. This has been seen nearly as often as H3N2 so far this year. In the past it was only commonly caught from pigs, but that changed in 2009 when it started spreading rapidly among humans in a major global pandemic.

B / Yamagata - This is known as 'Japanese flu'. Only people who received the 'four strain' vaccine - which is being slowly rolled out after it was introduced for the first time this winter - are protected against the Yamagata strain. Those who received the normal 'three strain' vaccine are not protected.

B / Victoria - This strain is vaccinated against in the normal 'three strain' vaccine, but has hardly appeared so far this winter, with just four confirmed cases.

They need to wash their hands more instead of blaming Oz...I won't grab a grocery buggy without wiping it down with sanitary wipes lol...Too many sickies in my area...

Here also , they supply us with a free antiseptic hand wipe to wipe of the germs from the shopping trolleys. I use 3 each time and I still get the flu at Xmas. Filthy peasants .

Yes there are dispensers of alcohol wipes at the entrance of the grocery shop, I try to go to the store early in the morning or late at night when most people aren't there...The sickies seem to come out during the daytime...Filthy sickies are all around in town, it's times like this I'm glad I live in the country away from that lot...

Many colds, flus and stomach bugs seem to be traveling around the UK. I don't blame the Aussies, though :D it's something about this time of year, really. I just hope people with immune systems that are in a state of disrepair can get the medical help they may need.

This outbreak is probably a test run for something deadlier.

Could be, there are sickies all around me in the cities, even at work it's going around, one of my staff was home for a week coughing blood...We have clean rooms that are sanitised and contamination free but someone can bring it from the outside...

They are blaming the British flu outbreak on the Australians.

Killer Oz flu blamed for UK outbreak

also the Irish flu outbreak blamed on Australia.

At least they aren't blaming Tasmanians so you are in the clear.

It should be noted that the OP map of the US is not correct. Guam is barely visible normal size, Alaska is much bigger than Texas, neither Guam nor Alaska are tucked under California, etc.

And Hawaii is the width of the CONUS out in Pacific ocean away from the CONUS.

It is the "it is way out in the ocean" that explains the lack of flu.

That's true we didn't do it. Even though I had the flu myself at Xmas ( never had that before in Summer ) , lasted 2 weeks, I have not seen an English person to give it to.

You don't have to settle for English, French, German, Kiwis, Italians, or South Americans will work just as well, just avoid Americans.

Hospital emergency rooms in California are putting up tents in their parking lots to handle the overflow of patients.
California marathon runner dies from flu | Daily Mail Online
  • Several hospitals across California are setting up giant tents in their parking lots to deal with the massive flu outbreak
  • Health officials said more than 40 people under the age of 65 in California have died. Last year at this time, it was nine
  • Hospitals have also been bringing in nurses from out of state and turning away ambulances because they have too many patients
  • Some facilities have been treating ill patients in the hallways while another hospital in San Jose emptied a storage area to make room for more beds
  • Pharmacies are selling out of medications used to treat symptoms of the virus
  • Experts have warned that this could be a historically bad flu season due in part to the H3N2 virus

These strains of flu are widespread and beginning to kill more and more people, i think its only just begun, the worst may yet come, 30 percent of kids in schools across 13 States were sick with a flu strain.

Now this:

The rare brain infection caused by the FLU:

Autistic Texas boy, 8, lost his speech and mobility after contracting the virus - which killed a 5-year-old boy in Georgia

  • For Witten Ramirez, 8, the flu suddenly turned into a debilitating brain infection called cerebrellitis
  • The previously active, social autistic boy lost his motor control, making it impossible for him to stand, walk or talk, due to the brain inflammation
  • Nearly a month after his flu was diagnosed, he still has the virus, and is in a rehab facility to relearn skills that once took him no thought
  • Three young boys lost their lives to the flu in the past week, including one that succumbed to a similar brain infection
