Fukushima’s nuclear signature found in California wine

The Japanese nuclear disaster bathed north America in a radioactive cloud. Now pharmacologists have found the telltale signature in California wine made at the time.
_________

The team began their study with the conventional measurement of cesium-137 levels in the unopened bottles. That showed levels to be indistinguishable from background noise.

But the team was able to carry out more-sensitive tests by opening the wine and reducing it to ash by evaporation. This involves heating the wine to 100 degrees Celsius for one hour and then increasing the temperature to 500 degrees Celsius for eight hours. In this way, a standard 750-milliliter bottle of wine produces around four grams of ashes. The ashes were then placed in a gamma ray detector to look for signs of cesium-137.

Using this method, Hubert and his colleagues found measurable amounts of cesium-137 above background levels in the wine produced after 2011. “It seems there is an increase in activity in 2011 by a factor of two,” conclude the team.

Color me dubious.

There is about 16.42 Zetta Becquerel (10**21) of natural radioactive elements in the ocean. 12300 Becquerel per cubic meter.

Very hard to make that a lot worse.

Further the vapor point of Cesium is 944K. And it is heavy. So it doesn't make a good aerosol.

About the only way radioactive Cesium from Fukushima could get into California grapes is if it swam across the ocean and walked about 30 miles mostly uphill.

Haven't seen a study of Cesium walking ability - but I'm dubious.

And given the ocean has about 2.83 Gigatonnes of Cesium in the ocean already - and a lot of CS 137 from atomic testing - the only way to identify Fukushima radioactivity is the CS 134 marker and that is almost all gone - Woods Hole testing showed little to no Fukushima Cesium reached the US.

That´s just about right,, didn't the plant leak huge amounts of Cesium due to ground water infiltration through and around the molten cores washing radioactive atoms out to sea `?

If that is so could the Cesium travel with rainwater evaporated from that ground water and made its way to California at some point in the future?...

The plant being on a slope just at the coast,, any ground water will pour straight into the ocean,,, I think they have frozen the ground around the plant artificially to stop the leaks..

And diverted small rainwater streams on the surrounding hills away from the plant.

The Fukishima 2011 earthquake in general is perhaps one of the most under reported news stories in recent history. Nearly 16,000 people have been confirmed dead and approximately 2500 are missing due to the earthquake and the ensuing tsunami yet most Americans know very little about it.

The world's governments don't want you to know about Fukushima. The aquatic life has been dying off and no reports. Japan doesn't say a peep because the Olympic Games are coming up in 2020. I believe some of the events will be staged not far from the nuclear plant. Right! That's where I want to be. Where radioactive water is bilging out into the ocean.

"The molten cores of those reactors melted down to a stage called corium, which is a lumpy hunk of irradiating radionuclides so deadly that robotic cameras are zapped! The radioactivity is powerful, deadly and possessed of frightening longevity, 100s of years. Again for those who missed class, TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company) has no idea where those masses of sizzling hot radioactive goo are today. Did they burrow into the ground? Nobody knows, but it is known that those blobs of radioactivity are extraordinarily dangerous, as in deathly, erratically spewing radioactivity “who knows where”?"

The largest quantities of plastic rubbish is in the Pacific ocean, I'm sure some of the plastic garbage coming from Japan is highly radioactive...

i hear in 50 years that the radiation will spread to Tokyo and continue. be like Chernobol but a lot larger area of radioactivity cause its spreading faster in water,we're killing the pacific ocean for good

When an article includes the phrase such as:
The CJR article, whether intentionally or not, is an indictment of right wing political control of media throughout the world.

You generally can just smell the bullshit in the rest of article and know it is a leftist/communist/warmunist/greenunist/globalist hack job.

TEPCO had 3 reactors slagged.

Kind of expensive way to make glow sticks.

A nuclear core really doesn't go to China. The residual heat from a scrammed reactor is problematic for a couple of days. But the short term actinides decay and the problem goes away exponentially.

If the fuel chews through the reactor - it alloys and lowers its nuclear crosssection. Chewing through concrete lowers the crosssection further. Without any capability to go critical it just gradually cools. It is less radioactive than used fuel. The TEPCO data indicates it is about 30% less radioactive than used fuel of an equivalent age.

It is thought that there is at least 30 centimeters of concrete between the fuel and the ground.

The problem is the containment was damaged by the earthquake, and water flows in and out of the buildings.

Yeah, the reactors toast commercial grade robots. A military grade robot doing inspection under the cores, might actually like it.
