This is a beautiful song...

Most of the time, the first five seasons of Supernatural are at best a fun diversion, and at worst a deeply flawed and uneven train wreck.

But once in awhile, they nail it. The ending of season 2 episode 17, "Heart" was one of those rare moments that the show suddenly transcended itself and became art (the entire season finale for season 5 was another stroke of genius all the way through).

And the choice of using the beginning of "Silent Lucidity" by Queensrÿche for this ending scene in "Heart" was sublime. After watching this right before bed last night, I've been haunted by this scene, and the lilting guitar melody playing in the background, all day long today.

If you haven't seen the whole episode, I recommend doing so, just so you can feel the full impact of the last four minutes. But if not, here it is. [Spoiler Alert] A little set-up for context first: Sam and Dean Winchester spend their lives killing vicious monsters and vengeful ghosts, and in this episode they've been hunting a werewolf that has left a trail of mutilated corpses. It seems to be after a beautiful woman, so Sam stays with her to keep her safe while Dean hunts the half-man half-beast. She's really cool and sensitive, and Sam falls for her hard. But then they realize that she's already been bitten, during what she thought was a mugging the month before, so the brothers try to save her by killing the werewolf that bit her, but the plan fails. She knows she has to die, or she'll kill when she turns. So she asks Sam to do it - it's the only way to "save her" from becoming a murderous monster...
