I see what you're saying and ideally and morally you are correct but in reality we simply cannot expect such things, to expect it is to have an entitlement mentality which is not constructive nor helpful, one must accept the reality of the situation and move forward...

...
I dont want to look at it as entitlement.

When an employer takes on a person he is not just hiring a skill set. He is hiring a human being, and that human needs to be cared for like family. That seems to be missing more and more.

Employers need to understand, it isnt just a job, it is peoples lives, it is a community.

It is not just a resource, but a real, living, brother or sister.

Agreed, but "no" you already have without saying a word. No harm is asking as long as it's polite. Over the years I took Kchoo's approach and it worked out very well for me.

As long as the federal government provides unemployment compensation many if not most companies will not provide severance pay...Whilst Kchoo's ideas are morally correct and for the most part I also agree with, its just not the reality of the situation and when in this situation of losing a long term job one must look at the reality of things, not what ifs and wishful thinking...It often turns out, at least in my past experience that losing one job opens opportunity to get a much better job with better wages...

True enough. Didn't exactly work out that way for me but there are extenuating circumstances. I did at least find some peace. Stress is a killer

In professional positions (at least in my experience), it is not considered taboo to negotiate a severance up front. One or two included it as part of their employee handbook so it did not require me asking. I said yes to both.

Depending on your value, contract it so that you recieve 4 weeks per year of service upon termination regardless of reason.

If you can do this, then you have some piece of mind that you won't be suddenly blind sided when a company has a bad quarter and decides to reduce human resorces to save a buck.
It encourages long term thinking on both parties vs short term knee jerk reactions.

If employers will not agree to something like this in writing, it can be a deal breaker. I have turned down good offers before because I expect a long term arrangement that is mutually beneficial. And I require that peace of mind to concentrate on helping both of us along the path to long term success, instead of worrying if I will have a job tomorrow.

It is an easy sell, because it is an honest sell, and it helps keep everyone in a good standing.

In businesses that does not have severance pay as a policy, they will not negotiate something they do not support, period...

My current position in the company I work for is a professional one, I am the third in the top tier of the company behind the owner and general manager, being the plant operations manager and this company does not offer and will not negotiate severance pay...With that said there are plenty of other perks and benefits that come with my salary position and I am free to restructure this company as I see fit to make it profitable with the full support of the general manager and owner...We do not offer severance pay to hourly employees either and never will, that is what unemployment compensation from the government is for...Simple as that...

Driving under the influence is inexcusable. I hope manslaughter charges are brought against the driver and I hope the driver is convicted and sentenced appropriately.

All this talk about jobs has triggered me to review and reflect on my own life.

There are people I met along the way that impressed me greatly. I owe thanks to so many folks I met through my jobs and career. It made me feel good to be around these people. They taught me a lot about life. There is a true sense of community, aquantences, influences, friends, some who were only in my life for a short while, but had a huge boost in my sense of belonging, my sense of community. Some were longer term and are still friends of the family... some supported me even when I was wrong, and some corrected me where I was failing...

To all of those, I send a big thank you out to the universe.
I remember what you did for me, in just simply being you....
I am very thankful to have worked with or beside you...

You are my friends, even if you did not always know it.

OK. Time for confessions. Have any of US done something a bit out of character in a store to get what you want?

A few years ago. Five days without power after a storm. Went to Home Depot asking about generators knowing full well there weren't any. Nice lady said 'leave me your number and I'll call you when the truck arrives.' Well, to my surprise she did just a little while later. I get there and see one skid of generators - maybe eight of them - with a sullen crowd just gawking at them.

Thought about it for a microsecond and said "oh there's mine" and shoved my way through the crowd, threw it on my shoulder and walked away. The feeding frenzy ensued for the rest. How exactly I did that remains a mystery. I'm no lightweight but that thing is goddamned heavy and I guess I had obnoxious-stoooopid strength and the time. Couldn't do it now.

I have just the slightest hint of embarrassment, but I also have a nice generator .......

What's the weight on the generator? Maybe the need was so great you got super strength like when a car falls on a family member.

About 170 lbs. Apparently my survival instincts were a bit more acute that day than the rest of the crowd. I might've actually bitten anyone who interfered.....

After 14 years, I would expect them to be nice on the way out.

It isn't unreasonable to expect something nice for a bon voyage. Especialy after 14 years.

I think it would be pretty dang impolite to let someone give 14 years of their life to a company without a decent parting gift.

I also think it is sad that people shrug it off like it is no big deal.
To that I say "Harumph".

14 years IS a big deal.

It was to my husband who received such a small amount of money it hurt him badly. I am there for him but please forgive him if he post something that seems off. I am trying to help him as best I can.
Blessed be
Rikki
