frankly i never really got the gist of mac, at first he seemed to be in the right path, talking about the high strangeness and synchromysticism related to UFOs and the paranormal, then out of nowhere he came to the conclusion that UFOs were a paralel civilization living alongside us, wich not only completely contradicts his earlier research but is also a explanation sillier than ETH, he also stole john keel's ultraterrestrial label for his theory, wich is also weird because mac's ultraterrestrial theory, has 0% to do with the original ultraterrestrial theory

I think this is partly because there is no real research anymore as said earlier. To a large degree that is because it is hard to get any funding (due to the ridicule factor) and the only way to make money in this field is to put out complete garbage and form a cult around yourself.

Even with those that stay honest and serious things don't advance, what happens instead is that people recycle theories from the past as if they are new ideas.

Until anyone can do real research the theories can't really evolve - there is no proof as such, no testing, all that happens is a particular theory comes into vogue, people get their fill of it and then they move onto something else because there is no progress.

Not sure what can be done.

It's one of the reasons I keep checking out every couple of years - it just gets so boring and repetitive. Often it doesn't just feel like we're making no progress, it feels like we are just going backwards.

My hope used to be that some rich billionaire would fund real research into it and make their findings public but I suppose that was as unrealistic as Gene expecting a Bill Gates type to receive his newsletter and send him a million dollars.

We have Bigelow doing his research but like most billionaires he has his own agenda - nobody is quite sure what it is but he certainly isn't revealing much of his research publicly. If he does find anything useful he will likely keep it under wraps and sell it to the military for a tidy sum.

I suppose that is why he is a billionaire and we aren't because if I were in his position I would make it public.

rick hilberg? hmmm, now where have i seen that name before...
You know I wonder if some of those old sightings of MIBs (tall, thin, cadaverous) were actually Steinberg pranking various people under the instructions of Prankster No. 1 - Jim Moseley.
well apparently there was a UFO group in washington during jim moseley's golden age that sent fake MIBs to scare people, i wonder....

Part of the problem is simply that times have changed. In the 50s and 60s, a UFO enthusiast could call up the newspaper that ran a story about someone local seeing a flying saucer, and get the phone number of the witness. People were not afraid of talking about weird experiences. Newspapers haven't done things like that in decades. People like John Keel, with bona fide press credentials, had access to all sorts of things that modern investigators do not. The ridicule factor has been extremely effective, but it wasn't all done intentionally. We didn't have a big reveal in Times Square or the White House lawn, people like Carl Sagan knew which side of the bread had the butter on it and avoided even talking about the subject, let alone admitting to an interest in it. Sagan certainly had an interest, but publicly went along with the ridicule.

Even in the late 60s, little was known about the other planets in our neighborhood. All sorts of things that sound stupid now were considered possible. Who knew for sure even if the Moon was a lifeless rock? Now we have a million "researchers" doing their copy and paste thing with whatever they can dredge up, preferably online somewhere so it's easy. Nobody goes and talks to witnesses. Even that theoretician and wrangler of metadata Jacques Vallee has done his share of interviewing ordinary folks who had visits from weird strangers. What we have lost is the rich texture of real investigations, details that you only find in books or at least long form reports by the people who checked facts, measured distances, and interviewed freaked out people. That sort of report does not fit well into the typical modern attention span.

I liked Mac and followed his blog. Thought he had some good ideas. I'm sure if he were still around, he'd be an established author. He was just getting started. I got the feeling he was a bit uncomfortable with the attention he was getting.

the other part of the problem is that UFO newsletters (FSR,APRO etc) doesn't exist anymore , they were a good way to group togheter good research
menber @Carl Grove wrote several articles for FSR, so i guess he knows more than me about this subject

What is so telling is that here it is, a dozen years or more down the road and Steinberg is supposedly still in the same position financially. He has never gotten himself righted. It would be great if you could ask him face to face about the real facts of his life. Of course you can’t do that because Steinberg is as slippery as a snake.

He has stated that he never goes to any UFO conferences. He knows full well that people would get in his face and confront him. It’s much better to sit in his motel room monitoring his websites or if he gets enough cash from his donors, he and the missus can hit the casino or a restaurant for some real living.

I wonder if he ever reflects on what a wasted life he has lived. Always having to rely on the generosity of others. Perhaps in his warped mind he likes this type of existence. Knowing he is getting over on honest people. Making others pay for his lifestyle.

I love this one. Thank you for posting it here. It's striking to me that:

- Gene 2006 declared asking for donations for personal matters in 2003 was "doing the unthinkable" (as opposed to making the impossible, I guess...). Gene 2018 is asking for donations for "groceries" and every other living expense on a near daily basis, sometimes more than once a day.

- Reading the note, all of the pleading we have become so familiar with was in place, the exact same dynamic of, I just need a little money (well, as much as you can give) to get past this really vague immediate obstacle and then everything will be fine; great, in fact. Please help poor old Gene out. We even see the Gene classic, "get their lives back", a real howler consider the family he's shilling for here seemed to base their lives on stealing from others.

- The rambling story about his in-laws legal and financial problems genuinely make no sense at all to me. And his statements would seem to contradict themselves, at least as I read them. The legal actions are behind them. But no final resolution for maybe 60 days. Also, an unrelated lucrative financial transaction is coming (and was held up how? and for that matter really, why?). But "to get from here to there... is proving to be near impossible". I mean, what? Why'd he even bother writing that babble?

And of course we have the gross misrepresentation of Stephen Beizer's circumstances and omission of his criminal acts. The same whitewashing continues to this day. Certainly Gene has never stopped asking for money, all supposedly stemming from this episode of Beizer legal trouble. And Jared Beizer is referred to as a child, which technically is true - he's the Beizer's son, but to me the wording seems intended to convey the impression he's say under age 10.

He concludes, "Your generosity will not be forgotten" and indeed it would seem it has not been, given that 12 years later the memory of it still motivates Gene to try to live off the goodwill and largesse of others.

I say again, what a creep.

Just talking about Gene or thinking about him magically results in a new begging message:
A Thanksgiving Day Nightmare About Life on the Street!
Hello,

Last night I dreamt that I was homeless, with all my remaining worldly possessions reduced to a few cartons. I had no idea about the fates of Barbara and Teddy Bear.

As of now, the storage facility has put a hold on our stuff. We can’t take anything out until they are paid in full, and they can auction it all off by next month.

The motel has to be paid by 11 AM each day so we can continue to stay here.

Other bills are due, but you get the picture.

I spent the day Sunday on the road with Lyft and Uber. When I returned to the motel, my right leg was numb and I could barely walk. I’ll be back at it today regardless.

Here’s how you can help me now — and the need is urgent.

For PayPal, please go to: Send Money, Pay Online or Set Up a Merchant Account - PayPal, login and use the Send to friends and family option. Enter my email address, gene@technightowl.com, and click or tap Next to continue the transaction.

Here’s another method if you’re not into using PayPal:

If you have an iPhone and iOS 11 or later, you can use Apple Pay Cash. You’d send the payment via the Messages app to: gene@theparacast.com

If you’re not able to send a donation, feel free to forward this message to someone who might assist.

If you have any questions about my living situation, please let me know.

Peace,
Gene

That's your current situation if you are to be believed you pathetic liar.

Strange that. It's almost like you don't care about them.

Lol what garbage. This has been discussed to death. If there ever was stuff in storage it was auctioned long ago.

The motel has to be paid by 11 AM each day so we can continue to stay here.
The obligatory explanation of how motels work.

Other bills are due, but you get the picture.
Standard cut and paste. No other bills are due but he wants you to think there are, however, he realises that his lies are so inept that if he specified something he could get caught out so he keeps it non-specific. Someone telling the truth would not need to do this.

His poor leg. His imaginary driving was so realistic that he imagined an injury to his leg. My heart bleeds. Real people doing real jobs have all sorts of strains and injuries. They just get on with it. This guy pretends he does a job and is now faking injuries in the fake job.

Here’s how you can help me now — and the need is urgent.
More cut and paste....

I guess Steinberg thinks he is the only human who has aches and pains after another day of work. Poor baby! By the way... that was no dream. Your reality is just that. You have all your possessions boxed up ready to be thrown out on the street. Just imagine if you would have been working an honest job all these past years. You might have been talking about actually retiring. Of course, there is no chance of that occurring these days. Oh well.

Starting the week by stretching out his hand and hoping to tug some heartstrings. A nightmare of poor old Gene all alone on Thanksgiving, just him and a 'few cartons' and his numb right leg.

If he hadn't been paying the storage facility as claimed, I'm skeptical he still had access to the space until now.

The thought of Gene sitting by himself with his cartons on Thanksgiving Day or any other day troubles me not at all. He's put a lot of time and energy into attaining that outcome.

He is not alone either but his sociopathic mind reveals the truth. Teddy Bear and Barbara don't even exist for him. It is all about him. I hope someone rescues them as I doubt Gene spends any time or money at all on making sure they are OK.

Does Gene realize that he might get invited to spend Thanksgiving with family or friends had he not burned all his bridges by "borrowing" money from everyone he ever knew and never making any attempt at repayment?

I doubt he understands how real relationships work i.e. the matter of give and take. All he has ever done has take - and the more help he gets, the more demanding he becomes. I can't imagine he has ever done anything altruistically for anyone. It is always about him extracting value from others.

Just look at what he did with his own son. I don't blame him for moving halfway across the world. That way he can be sure Schemey won't be able to use his name for fraudulent purposes.

I really would've expected them to throw their own lock on the door to his space once he was late in paying but, maybe there is a grace period during which you could empty out the space and run away.

So I decided to take a look at my mail archives from 2010 (when I believe that Gene started his begging campaign using Paracast subscribers). Here are some of the first messages I could locate.

I honestly didn't remember that he had had his bank account "hacked" back then as well! I wonder how often he gets "hacked" and how does it keep happening? I have been unable to locate the original newsletter where he says he talked about this.

It's fascinating to see how nothing has really changed in the eight and a half years since.

This first message is from March 10th 2010 - just notice all the similarities:

A SPECIAL UPDATE FROM GENE STEINBERG
(Mailing list information, including unsubscription instructions, is located at the end of this message.)

As I've said previously, I am amazed and humbled at the incredible outpouring of support from you readers and listeners. In all this, I've received only a handful of letters objecting to my decision to ask for donations from my online "family." I expected the reaction to be far more negative.

What's your present situation?

The hijacking of our bank account was the killer. The "pay up or prepare to move" warning has already been received from the rental office. Just as bad, if we don't pay our health insurance bill soon — and it was just raised to nearly $1,400 a month with a high deductible — we lose it. The family's preexisting conditions will make it impossible to get new coverage unless or until that health care bill is passed. Even then, it will take several years to phase in all of the features, during which time we'll be dangerously vulnerable.

Are you losing support because of your appeal for donations?

Perhaps a few. One letter from someone I presumed to be a friend suggested I was "losing it" because I felt it necessary to ask for "handouts." I didn't expect this situation to happen, obviously, and I was put into a situation where I had to ask for help or lose everything I've worked for over the past ten years.

So what really happened? Why are you suddenly so desperate for cash?

I'm sure most of you are aware of my ongoing pleas for donations and loans to help cover serious medical expenses and other issues. Well, we had another disaster in February, and this will come as no surprise to some of you.

Our bank account was hijacked, as explained in a recent newsletter. It was cleaned out. In the end, the money will be recovered, but it will take a while for the authorities to investigate and find out what really happened.

We were already suffering from all those mounting expenses. Now the nightmare has grown even worse, which is why I probably need your help more than ever. And, no, this is not the time to attach blame. Things happen.

Now, a few people have written me wondering whether my recent online appeals for donations were genuine. I suppose with so many Internet scams around, this is to be expected. I've also received a number of letters from people who have donated to our cause and expressed concerns about the doubters.

If you are still able to help, however, your donations are welcomed and deeply appreciated. To be perfectly blunt: The situation has left us with zero cash and we urgently need to cover our expenses. Please send your contribution via PayPal to gene (at) technightowl (dot) com. Or click this direct link. Please write me directly if you wish to use a different payment method, such as a wire transfer to my bank account. If anyone is willing to bankroll the entire sum, I'd be willing to work out a loan arrangement with a reasonable payback plan.

Please Note: If you just discarded the original message, or never saw it, here's a link a blog post that explains what it's all about: http://www.technightowl.com/2010/01/an-urgent-request-from-the-night-owl/.

Peace,
Gene Steinberg

WE'RE MAKING PROGRESS
(Mailing list information, including unsubscription instructions, is located at the end of this message.)

Many of you have asked if these online appeals for donations and loans have had any positive results. The answer is that the incredible support you've demonstrated has helped us begin to make some progress. There are still critical payments due almost immediately, such as that horrendous $1,400 monthly health insurance payment, life insurance, auto insurance, medications (really costly), utilities and, of course, food. We just squeezed a partial rent payment, but we're still behind and we're remaining here with the indulgence of one of the rental office people who became aware of our situation.

Some of you wonder if I should just give up this business and try something else. Well, aside from the fact that getting good paying jobs in the fields in which I'm skilled is difficult if not impossible as the result of the current economic mess, this is, as I've said before, strictly a short-term problem. We will eventually get the money stolen from the bank account, although it will come too late to help deal with the current emergency. Also, a new marketing person will be joining the company soon to help build income and get us back on track.

That doesn't account for much, however, if we can't cover those critical expenses now. If you still feel you can help us, however, your donations are welcomed and deeply appreciated.

A new marketing person then?

7 days later - 23 March 2010 there was this:

UPDATE ON MY PERSONAL NIGHTMARE

(Mailing list information, including unsubscription instructions, is located at the end of this message.)

I continue to hope we are nearing the end of this three-month ordeal, in which our personal finances were devastated from heavy medical expenses and, just as we were making progress, our bank account was hijacked. But there are still critical expenses remaining, bills that we must pay for otherwise we lose our health insurance, power and other critical needs. Oh, in case you're wondering, the newly-ratified health care bill in the U.S., even if it sustains the threatened court challenges, will take several years to be fully implemented. It won't help us now!

That doesn't account for much...(usual spiel)

On the 29th March we got:

AN UPDATE ON OUR SITUATION

As our financial ordeal hits the three month mark, I remain hopeful we're getting close to a resolution. As you know, our personal finances were devastated from heavy medical expenses and, just as we were making progress, our bank account was hijacked by identity thieves. Thanks to your generous donations, we've made a fair amount of progress. But there are still critical expenses remaining, bills that we must pay for otherwise we lose our health insurance, power and other critical needs. That doesn't account for much, however,......

From 3rd April 2010:

EMERGENCY WEEKEND UPDATE!
As the weekend approaches, we are left with major expenses that we must be paid now! As you know, we've made an awful lot of progress, thanks to your help, and a small amount of business income. However, we also have rent, the higher health care payments (after a recent major increase) and loads of other expenses that loom threateningly ahead.

As you know, our personal finances have been buffeted by high medical expenses, and the identity theft incident involving our personal checking account was the killer. What we had managed to begin to save up until then was lost completely!

Thanks to your generous donations, we've made a fair amount of progress. Some of you wonder if I should just give up this business and try something else. Well, aside from the fact that getting good paying jobs in the fields in which I'm skilled is difficult if not impossible as the result of the current economic mess, this is, as I've said before, strictly a short-term problem. Looks like he got lazy with cut and pasting quite early on. These just go on and on and on as we well know. I hadn't realised how frequently he was posting these back then. It wasn't daily but it was every few days, at least once a week. Anyway have a look and see what you think. I have only had a skim of these as I don't have much time right now. Will go through properly later but the similarities with the storylines are just ridiculous. When you lay it out like this the fraudulent nature of it all becomes so obvious.
