Yep - if he is truly without a smartphone, he doesn’t have the Uber or Lyft apps, and now cannot drive for those services.

I imagine he is in a motel with free Internet, so we won’t have to worry he won’t get his podcasts or scamming emails out.

I was fleetingly tempted to call his phone number to see if he was truly disconnected, but didn’t want to chance the old reptile actually answering.

Happy New Year, everyone.

You miss the point. You can't use Uber/Lyft without a cellphone but the reason is not navigation it is the fact that you can't use the app, so you can't accept customers or payment.

I got that, but I would not parse the language in this instance. Although you can use a third party partner app for routing the built in Uber navigation app needs to be working as well:

"When using a third party navigation app, your partner app continues to record trip details to ensure your fare is correct."

So Gene is not technically incorrect even if it is not fully complete

You seem to be making the same point as me and reaching a different conclusion . Gene implied that the reason he could not drive was because he could no longer navigate. He did not mention the apps which is the real reason why he would not be able to drive (- it's like saying you have a car with no engine but saying it doesn't drive because the antenna for the radio was broken). That is basic knowledge which someone who purports to be driving for Uber/Lyft would know. So I'm not sure what you are arguing with me about - your statements so far just support exactly what I'm saying.

Lots of "ifs" with Gene's 2019 kick-off email.

If his smartphone service really is shut off...

If he really was driving enough for Uber and / or Lyft to make a difference to him income-wise...

If he still is in a motel... (which, I think he probably is)

then I'd say he may soon be riding over the falls in that, uh, "barrel of hurt" (?!) he refers to.

Unless the Social Security income alone is enough to pay for a motel room, that is. Which, I would guess they could find some motel where that is feasible. Wouldn't imagine it would leave a lot for anything else though.

His program of passively grasping at cash would seem to have not served him well in his ongoing and never-ending crisis.

It was unclear to me if he really was driving much or at all for Uber / Lyft. That he didn't try to privately bite on the Shadow's offer of paying for (iirc) his storage bill if he'd share his driving records made me think either the storage space was already gone, or he wasn't driving very much, if at all.

Anyway, this development was probably not the best news for Gene or anyone who cares about him. Again though if it's really true.

Nothing he says or (allegedly) does makes any sense. You would think that if he had to prioritise he would prioritise paying his phone bill over his car payments. Similarly you would presume the primary payment he would make sure to pay would be the motel bill - yet he claims he doesn't. It never seems to add up in any logical way. That's why I think it makes sense to assume it is all lies until proven otherwise. 2018 was a record year for begging for him. Sadly, I suspect 2019 will smash that record - the only thing that Schemey changes is his begging frequency.

Dear God! Does Steinberg have one positive thought in his body? It appears not. I took a look for the first time ever at the “junk” that is being sold on the Paracast. First, everything still has former disgruntled co-host Chris O’Brien’s face on everything. Sorry, the artwork is amateurish or cartoonish, take your pick. I can’t imagine who would buy this stuff.

If 2018 was a tough year for Steinberg I have this feeling that 2019 won’t be an improvement for him.

2018 largely sucked but I haven't been online making a nuisance of myself over it.
The guy told me as long as the cell phone wasn't in my hands while I drove I was fine, I could not hold it to use maps or anything, I had to be hands free to use my phone in N.Y. state he said..I was in Buffalo on business back then a few years ago and was calling and everything whilst driving until that kind fellow informed me, better him then a policeman, cheaper too lol...

...

I got pulled over and warned once and the cop was very cool about it - no ticket. I was using a flip phone so that dates it. They're doing the same thing we are anymore and I think you have to be doing something really stupid to get cited. No idea if this is s.o.p or legal but I'd like to look at a driver's phone if there were an accident to see if they were on it at the time.

As I predicted he read what was written here yesterday and changed his story about "navigation" being the reason he couldn't drive. When do we get a writing/editor's fee Gene? You've just proven that we know more about driving for ride sharing companies than you do.

On the brink of disaster!
Hello,

The news isn’t so good.

There has been no progress in restoring my cell phone. Rather than suspending it, the contract was canceled by mistake, which means it’ll take longer to reactivate after payment.

Without a wireless connection with a large data plan, I’m not able to use Lyft and Uber. I lose an important source of income.

As usual the motel has to be paid by 11 AM Arizona time (Mountain) to have a place to stay.

Other bills are due, but these are the most important.

Can you provide some help today?

If you can please follow the usual process:

Login to: Send Money, Pay Online or Set Up a Merchant Account - PayPal, login and use the Send to friends and family option. Enter my email address, gene@technightowl.com, and click or tap Next to continue the transaction.

Thank you for reading and for your past support. Happy New Year.

Peace,
Gene

Assuming this is true (and with Schemey it pays to assume it is not) when you repeatedly don't pay your phone bill the contract being cancelled is not a mistake. It is standard practice - they cut you off on purpose because they don't need customers who don't pay - first time you do it they might just suspend service, but not if you keep doing it.

I'm still sometimes surprised by how gullible this moron thinks we are.

He claims he drives for Uber/Lyft and yet the rest of us seem to understand how the service works better than he does. Now he is trying to school us on how cell phone companies work - something which every person has direct knowledge of - but no, let's not believe our own experience, let's believe the words of a serial scammer who is hoping to profit from this BS.

At this point his claims of being tech expert are just as laughable as his daily emergencies.

Jack Brewer's latest UFO Trail blog post on Gene is a thing to behold. It gives a count and the subject line of his 2018 emails, by month. At least 222 distinct beg emails.

Scammer or no, it's hard for me to think that those emails are the product of a healthy mind.

Maybe if you're going to follow UFO talk or "the paranormal" you just have to accept you'll run into the likes of Gene Steinberg. Jack Brewer says, "This writer continues to assert it relevant that Steinberg claims himself the "gold standard" of paranormal radio, yet his chronic cash solicitations are riddled with contradictions and selective omissions, all taking place within a genre historically known for harboring charlatans." Emphasis mine - and, yeah. Indeed.

I don't think that's any reason not to call out Gene Steinberg's bad behavior though. Certainly it's no reason not to marvel at it, to question the inconsistencies and point out the lies and exaggerations... and to hope he doesn't take advantage of anyone else, as he has so clearly done in the past.
