Planets that could sustain alien life much rarer than thought

Here is the kicker - the actual list of stars near us.

List of nearest stars and brown dwarfs - Wikipedia

Flare stars, red dwarfs, brown dwarfs, etc. etc.

Over half are flare stars. Periodic scrubbing of any planets is bad.

There are two things to note:
1. There are pitifully few stars that are viable.
2. There are many fewer planets in the nearby star systems. Earth has more planets than all 11 stars (actually 14 since there are a couple of binaries counted as one star) within 10 LY.

Stars within ten light years (spitting distance) should be adequately cataloged.

As far as wishful thinking goes, we want life to be rarer, rather than ubiquitous.

Don't give a rat's ass if life is rare or ubiquitous.

Just want a metric that holds up when examined against our local experience.

We should be in a galactic life hotspot. When you look around for the planets that these estimates claim should be there... They aren't.

No estimate I know of predicts that the Sun would have one more planet (and we aren't counting Pluto) than all the 14 stars within 10 LY.

We really want to know if we should expect company or not, and it doesn't look like anyone is pulling up the driveway.

meh, its still very doubtfull we are alone in the milk way, as doubtfull as the theories that UFOs are extraterrestrial in origin in fact
