22 Retailers Closing Stores

Its really asinine to keep filling party balloons with helium given we are running out fast with no solution yet...The moon should be mined for helium, or asteroids...

...
They could be using the helium for unacknowledged purposes.
How is helium made?
If you put helium in a balloon and let go of the balloon, the balloon rises until it pops. When it pops, the helium that escapes has no reason to stop -- it just keeps going and leaks out into space. Therefore, there is very little helium in the atmosphere at any given time.

The helium that is in the atmosphere comes from alpha particles emitted by radioactive decay (see How Nuclear Radiation Works for details on alpha decay). In places that have a lot of uranium ore, natural gas tends to contain high concentrations of helium (up to 7 percent). This makes sense, since the decay of uranium emits lots of alpha particles and a natural gas pocket tends to be a sealed container underground.

Helium is cryogenically distilled out of natural gas to produce the helium we put in balloons.

Years ago people were pointing and shrieking at Walmart because that business model ate the lunch of Bradlees, Caldor, Barkers, Jamesway and others. Yeah, Sam Walton nailed Mrs.B but good, nudge nudge wink wink. Somehow vestiges of Sears, Macys and JC Penney remain. When I look at their stores locally I wonder why. And stores like Target and Kohls have grown up since and sort of reinvented it all.

Now a new business model is eating their lunch. In the past couple of years I have been dealing with Amazon and have nothing but good experiences to report. I also use them for streaming all sports of good stuff - Man n the High Castle and The Tick, among others.

I've also seen a number of small cottage businesses grow via eBay, as well as deal with a number of online retailers that go under an eBay pseudonym which offer slightly different pricing.

This is capitalism, a narrow form of evolution and survival of the fittest, at work.

In the 'technology and job losses' thread the idea that you have to keep your skills current to be employable was accepted. In this thread I say retailers need to be proactive and keep their business models current.

One example just from today. Looking for some DIY crapola. Got Lowes, Home Depot and Ace Hardware stores nearby. They all have websites I can surf, do online orders etc. But HD provides a mobile app that's just cool, real slickey-fish. It'll tell me exactly where to go in what store to find what I want - necessary because you can never find anyone actually working there that'll be able to help - show me reviews, product manuals, give me ordering options. For those who thought optical character recognition was cool, you should have a look at the optical object recognition bits built into this app. Example, you're looking for a weird electrical connector or plumbing part just hold it in the palm of your hand and let the app take a look at it. It's sifting through an enormous database including all of HD's items and looking for a match.

It's slow and the hit rate is not the best - yet - but when you take a step back and think about what's really going on it's impressive. By itself this app won't make me a die hard HD lover, but like Amazon it's about convenience and general utility and in the end it'll probably allow money to flow from my pocket to theirs more often.

Pier 1 Imports plans to close 57 stores, more possible
Pier 1 Imports is increasing the number of stores expected to shutter this year.

The Texas-based home goods retailer said Wednesday it was looking to close 57 stores in the fiscal year, up a dozen from the April estimate of 45 stores.

“We are in active discussions with our landlords” interim CEO Cheryl Bachelder said during the company’s quarterly earnings call with analysts. “Where we have not seen landlord participation, we have begun our store closing program as we said we would." USA TODAY

I wouldn’t read too much into the Toys R Us story. There are supposed to be 2-3 reopened stores. WalMart ate Toys R Us’s lunch a long time ago.

A local jewelry store has billboard signs up. The store (Higashi) is closing for good. The jewelry is going for 19 cents on the dollar. Stock up while you can.

Fratty and out of touch.
Best Buy might not survive when the next recession hits. The only product line where the retailer still dominates is TVs. Computers and accessory sales have been lost to Amazon and Walmart. Movies, music, and video games have all migrated to virtual sales on the internet instead of physical sales.

Greedy lawyers are getting more money than those who lost their jobs because of bankruptcy...

View attachment 7306

33,000 Toys 'R' Us workers are set to receive a $2 million severance package. A Virginia judge approved a settlement for all the employees who were laid off meaning each will get about $60 apiece.
