Somebody call Robert Bartholomew

Some ex-paracasters may remember that I was hot on this topic a few years ago, and I still am. Robert Bartolomew wrote a number of books on the subject on mass hysteria & emotional contagion and I suspect a few play a role in high strangeness events.

Jeepers! Creepers, Havana Syndrome, and Mass Hysteria

Also Loren Coleman's Twilight Language and the Copycat Effect can be an interesting read although I think Loren takes a rather loose pattern of connecting the dots and shoehorns a working theory into a string of random events. Oh well we'll see this weekend with the release of The Joker.

Wade this is cool - and more there than many would give thought to. Hadn't heard about this and reached for the easy but less likely answer first - I thought the narrative we've heard was the answer. Apparently there is something else to at least consider. Applies to a lot of things.

'Emotional contagion' indeed. This is why people see Slenderman, evil goddamned clowns, probably Mothman etc etc. It likely accounts for a hell of a lot of UFO reports - if not some direct observation a case of 'I saw it too.' You might also call it unintentional embellishment. Right now I'm thinking of the Hudson Valley Wave and yup, that's definitely part of the recipe.

Bugs too. I remember there was an incident mentioned in Ruppelt's book about credentialed scientists being baffled by a weird series of sightings that were later discovered to be bugs and streetlights. That does sounds Klassy but it's what the man said. He was vague about some of the details to protect the identity of the people involved.
