I liked it too, and there are many who like this show.
At the same time, a lot of "Trek traditionalists" despise it. They post their condemnations on Facebook and IMDB.

I was very saddened to see Icheb die, it never occurred to me that there would be aliens in the Alpha quadrant who would harvest Borg technology from freed drones, even murdering people for their implants, but I wished they didn't kill off Icheb, his character could have played in many future Star Trek series given his age.

What was it about the episode they cried the most?...

Your example is one of them. But in general, they don't like the dark future depicted in the new Treks. They regard them as deviating from Roddenberry's vision.

I don't see it that way, its not a dark future but more of the darker side of things that go on within Federation space which we wouldn't see in a series focused on Star Fleet matters, like Voyager and TNG was...Picard is not a Star Fleet themed series, its more of a 'Firefly' themed series outside of Star Fleet but still within the Federation and very much Star Trek...

Yeah it seems well intentioned in the show but I could take it or leave it, not a big issue with me presently lol...

People have also complained about profanity in Project Blue Book on cable.
The thing is though, when the show is streamed from the History Channel website, the profanity is totally muted.
I wonder why there's a discrepancy?

Speaking of dark futures it was Gene Roddenbury who introduced us to the Borg in TNG series, who became the most feared and one of the most deadly alien species Star Fleet has ever encountered...This dark and dangerous species is what helped make Voyager so popular...

Borg Origins
The creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry, who had a turbulent relationship with TNG, pushed the show’s writers to invent new aliens to cause headaches for Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his crew. None of the alien races introduced in the early seasons made an impression with TNG viewers.

The writing staff came up with an idea for an alien race that functioned like insects. The producers loved the idea, but the special effects required to create giant bugs would have led to a budget blowout; Star Trek was still made on the cheap. They swapped the idea of insects to robotic creatures and The Borg were booted up.

The Borg first appear in the TNG episode ‘Q Who?’ where the Enterprise gets stuck in a mysterious part of the universe inhabited by the cyborg menace. The Borg’s debut became one of the most watched episodes of TNG at the time and they returned several times, including in the epic two-part episode ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ where Captain Picard is abducted and assimilated - Picard is physically transformed into one of these cybernetic monsters. ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ bridged the third and fourth seasons and is often cited as one of the best episodes of Star Trek ever.

I just watched Picard episode six, another great one too, the story built up throughout the show keeping my attention with great writing and acting...I also didn't expect to see a certain character return to Star Trek either and was pleasantly surprised!...

It's a great show, I was talking to Tate about it earlier today, Or, Yesterday I suppose. I see it like this, At this point, Patrick Stewart is basically going through a last Hurrah of sorts. To me, The fact that Picard is actually good is just a fringe benefit. If it was a lot worse than it is, I'd still watch it, It's a direct tie-in to TNG. And To boot this, I ask this somber question, What do you suppose Patrick Stewart will be doing in ten years? Yeah. So, I say that, So I can now Fairly critique it. If I had one Gripe, That Gripe would be the Data Tease, I somehow thought this show was just going to be chucked full of data, And this is where the critique comes in and duly so. People could argue, It's star trek Picard, Not Star trek data, But, yet, Data is such an integral part of the plot narrative. I understand that the pacing of the show is slow in order to introduce new characters and develop its unique essence apart from TNG.

But I ask, Break Down an episode of Picard. All the things we really want from the show are dangled on a string and we get so little of it. For instance, How much Data have we actually gotten? So very little, Seven of nine appeared, HOw much seven of nine did we get? Well, to be honest, I'm pleased with that, The whole mother angle with Echeb that was awesome. But this brings me to the true problem with the writing on the show. Echeb was set up in voyager to be this prodigal person, He had so much potential he was a very deep character, important in star trek lore, To kill him off as they did, It was unnecessary. As a fan. I just simply hate the fact that Echeb was killed off and for what? An ultimatum, TO build Seven of nines character in an admittedly profound way. Still, I'm not down with the Echeb Death. I think A sociopath with no concept of the fanbase is behind this series, I think we are about to see a lot of "Moments" where very important people are just fed to the lions for impact and story development, And Honestly That's not Really Solid writing, That's reaching into the cookie jar. "established cannon" And milking it for Shock and views.

I'm being fair here, Picard is a Spectacle of a show. And I'm hooked, I would watch it if it sucked ten times worse than it does, But, I do see those fractures they show in the into, manifesting into the story. To colloquialize it, They are Fractureing every fairytale in the fanbase. Who will they off next for Shock value?

Beverly crusher? Warf? Star Trek Consequences, I mean Picard, Is good, But it's shaking the table pretty hard...

I don't have CBS on demand and I haven't seen Picard but I only recently discovered Star Trek Continues and Star Trek Phase II.

Star Trek Continues
Star Trek: Phase II

OMG! These shows, available for free on YouTube, are 100% fan-based, not-for-profit productions. Phase II is good but it can be hit-or-miss. Big Trek names like Gene Roddenberry, George Takei, Walter Koenig, and Majel Barrett have contributed.

Star Trek Continues has the look of a real television production or theatrical movie. The cinematography, lighting, sound... everything is amazing! It attracted legitimate stars like Lou Ferrigno.

I highly recommend these eps for weekend binge watching. :)

My personal favorite ep of Star Trek Continues:

To Boldy Go attempts to create closure for the original canon.

Did anyone catch the Kzinti name drop in the latest episode? They were originally a species belonging to Larry Niven's Known Space series. I particularly remember them from the classic sci-fi novel, Ringworld.

They were first written into the Star Trek universe by Niven himself, in the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode, The Time Trap.

I just watched episode 7, this was another brilliant episode and I keep looking forward to the next episode coming, the story is really developing well, and next week, my god are we about to witness
the rebirth in some variation of the Borg hive mind starting with that cube the Romulans have?

It was nice to see some of the Next Generation Enterprise crew, really looking forward to seeing Seven of Nine again next week...

This is long, I know no one will read it. but it's my feelings about this fucked up show called Picard, Hear me out,
You mean Star Trek Apocalypse... They keep killing off really important people :( Echeb and Even Hue? it disgruntles me. Here is why This Show is Patrick Stewarts Show I get that, And In canon, he really was an important Guy,
Even The Q entities have a fascination with his Moral character.

But Echeb and Hue Weren't just nobody throw away characters, The Picard show is taking really drastic steps with canon. We could debate the importance of canon. but if canan wasn't important at all, Then None of star trek would be important. I honestly Don't like that they Didn't Give Seven of Nine her happy ending with Chaktoaty, Now see, This is why that's important If Seven of nine didn't get her chance to live her life out with Chakotay. Then Older Janeway died for literally no reason, Making a lot of star trek voyager inaccurate at best. Worthless to canon, You may as well set fire to voyagers Canon. Echeb, Who was established in Voyager a Character who was in the last two seasons, The main attraction to the show at that point mind you, He was popular, he got a lot of airtime, hell Echeb was so popular, They invented a character, Q's Son, Just to be in an episode all about how Awesome Echeb was. They aren't just Killing people off, Picard is literally burning down the established canon, Making past events completely worthless in context. For shock value.

I like this show, Because it is star trek, And it's tied into TNG. However, This show is doing irreversible damage to the Star Trek franchise. Canon is important, If not to a few. It's important to many, There are star trek conventions for crying out loud. Canan is important because, without canon and established lore, Ron weasely could have just finished off Voldemort by slipping his some of that wacky candy and turning him into a bat or something.. Picard has a complete disregard to the value of canon, And people can say, I'm overthinking this, Well Star trek has a deep canon, It's that way explicitly so people can overthink about it, And they are handling this all wrongly. Picard is like If Michale Bay Metaphorically got to blow star trek up. .... It's fun to watch, But All those unnecessary deaths. And Why? What's the ultimate payoff? Why did Echeb have to die? Why did Hue have to die? Why will seven of nine end up dying later on? So the little twirly dancy chick who's not really data's Daughter but somehow is can be made relevant?

I like that it's star trek, I like that Picard is back. I don't really like the direction or writing.
