Italy in Hell... Britain in weeks? Apocalyptic despatch from TOBIAS JONES in Parma of 'sirens and church bells tolling for the dead'

On Thursday night, Sky News broadcast a shocking new portrait of Italy's unfolding disaster, filming the chaotic scenes taking place inside the Papa Giovanni XXIII hospital in Bergamo, barely 100 miles from where I am in Parma. Patients, many wearing oxygen-rich 'bubble helmets' to help them breathe, were seen clutching their chests as they gasped for air. Beds filled the waiting room, the wards being full. The health system here risks being overwhelmed entirely and my fellow Britons should take note. This is what the NHS could face in a matter of weeks because the surge in UK infections all too closely resembles Italy's, writes TOBIAS JONES. (Pictured left, an intensive care unit in Oglio Po hospital in Cremona; top right, medics stretcher a coronavirus patient to hospital in Milan; bottom right, a doctor holds a tablet so that a patient can talk to his relatives in the ICU room of the Spedali Civili hospital in Brescia, northern Italy; and inset, a newly operational field hospital for coronavirus in Cremona, southeast of Milan.)

Northern Territory joins Tasmania in forcing anyone crossing the border into two-week quarantine after chilling warning entire towns could be shut down over coronavirus - as cases rocket to 1,073

The Northern Territory has joined Tasmania in locking down their borders as the number of COVID-19 cases around the country rocket to 1,073. Prime Minister Scott Morrison banned non-residents from entering the country after 9pm on Friday and advised Australians to reconsider 'non-essential' domestic travel as the country desperately attempts to control the deadly outbreak. But states and territories are now taking matters into their own hands, with Tasmania and the Northern Territory imposing a 14-day quarantine for anyone who crosses their borders.

Time Out from this is very important as I can vouch for but still as important is to take your news from the mainstream only.

It is a desperate situation for us all but I have faith in us prevailing. Seems like a hopeless situation for some maybe but I don't buy that at all. I put my faith squarely in humanity and our capability to overcome this enemy, just like we have done so in the past.

I'm getting a touch of hysteria from my cousins across the pond on here and it saddens me to see it. Have faith in our prevalence in this world so far and combine that with what you think we are capable of when put upon. The unprecedented creates innovation at its best.

Take your head out of it if possible and chuffing the high grade won't help any, pour yourself a stiff one, something I can't do but am thinking about but won't.

Everyone, I am not making light of any of this. Who could?

It is possible to get excessively worked up over it to no good purpose. I read and see the same news as everyone else and am having difficulty matching it up with what's going on outside my door. Things are quiet but there are no troops on the streets, no riots, no trucks picking up bodies. I know full well things can change and maybe they will but @pepe is right - we all need a Time Out. This isn't denial, it's just being practical. Believe me, if I need to go on Red Alert and jettison the pod I will..

What that did and exactly and whatever the hell Finney was doing in there that couldn't be automated always made me wonder ..... but I digress.

We're right in the middle of this s**t and have just hunkered down. In fact, it's almost a vacation. I'm relaxed and have gained weight, finally been getting some decent sleep. Probably drank too much beer and have been painting. We've been walking the dog a lot and, at a distance, have probably had more contact with our neighbors than we have had in years. And are behaving decently - there are elderly folks around here and there's even been toilet paper sharing.

The roads, trains and subways are working. Nobody is being stopped and interrogated. The stores are largely still open with reduced hours and staff; the definition of 'essential' is liberal.

My wife has a phrase I like. "The world will go around just the same without you pushing"
If getting crazy would have helped the problem would already be fixed.

De Blasio’s senior staff in near revolt over his coronavirus response
By Julia Marsh and Nolan Hicks

Bill de Blasio headed to the gym on Monday amid the coronavirus pandemic.

When Mayor de Blasio dragged aides and members of his NYPD security detail to his Brooklyn YMCA Monday morning amidst the coronavirus outbreak, fellow fitness enthusiasts were coughing and sneezing — and a mentally ill person was walking around touching the equipment, a gym source said.

“It’s crazy that he made his staff and detail come with him to the gym and expose them like that,” the source said.

But the incident is just one example of the mayor’s disregard for the health of his staff during the crisis, multiple sources told The Post.

There’s also growing frustration from senior aides, who fault the mayor for dithering instead of making decisions, micromanaging instead of leading, and insisting he knows best instead of listening to others, three sources said.

‘Thank god for Cuomo,’ is a common refrain among the mayor’s staff, made only partly in jest, sources said.

That’s because Gov. Andrew Cuomo has taken the lead on the city’s COVID-19 response — canceling the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, shutting down large venues including Broadway, and even pushing the mayor to close public schools.

But instead of the big picture, the head of the City that Never Sleeps has insisted on proofing all public materials about the city’s COVID-19 response from press releases to ad campaigns, one source said.

Bad rep: De Blasio enjoys one last workout before Cuomo shuts down NY gyms

“Instead of micromanaging his team he should be leading right now,” the source said.

And the mayor has tossed aside advice from staffers along the way. Staff repeatedly warned the mayor that prematurely announcing a possible shelter-in-place order Tuesday would cause unnecessary panic.

“He can’t handle the word ‘No,’ and it runs people down,” the source said.

“He is dismissive of everyone’s opinion around him,” added a second source.

“It’s very much his way or the highway in moments of crisis and he thinks he knows best,” the second source noted.

De Blasio described what a shelter-in-place order would look like for New York City at a City Hall press briefing and even refused to rule out a ban on travel out of the Big Apple.

Hours later Cuomo went on NY1 to reprimand the mayor.

“There’s not going to be any, ‘You must stay in your house,’ rule,” Cuomo said, calling the mayor’s remarks “counterproductive.” The governor explained that he wanted to craft a statewide plan before shutting down non-essential business in the Big Apple.

The governor eventually announced a statewide lockdown Friday, three days later.

Tensions are also frayed between de Blasio and many of his longtime aides.

But his chief of staff Emma Wolfe enjoys a better relationship with the Mayor.

“She is pushing back a lot harder than she normally does with him,” the second source said.

“Emma is an operative to the core and she has a relationship with the governor’s office. They respect her game and her political mind. She is able to forecast in terms of moves the governor’s office is going to make well before the mayor.

“She sees the need to be decisive in a moment like this and he doesn’t so she’s pushed him to get there,” the second source added.

The Post previously reported tensions between the mayor and senior health department officials including the city’s top doctor, Commissioner Oxiris Barbot.

A third source said de Blasio isn’t delegating decisions, which is why so many major announcements have had to be made by the governor.

The staff is “endlessly frustrated” by the mayor’s disregard for their health and micromanagement, the third source confirmed.

“He is a monster to deal with right now,” the second source explained.

“He’s incredibly condescending. He thinks he has a pulse on the emotions and feelings and concerns of everyday New Yorkers better than his staff, which is remarkable for a guy who lives in a mansion on the Upper East Side,” the source said.

Asked for comment, Freddi Goldstein, the mayor’s press secretary, said “this is an unprecedented crisis.”

“We are talking about massive decisions every day like closing schools for 1.1 million kids and closing businesses that give people their livelihoods. None of this is easy. The mayor gives every member of the team a chance to deliberate, but in the end only he can make decisions like this on behalf of 8.6 million New Yorkers,” Goldstein said.

Horrifying moment man gasps and collapses in New York City subway sparking panic amid coronavirus outbreak

Untitled.png

A horrific video shows when a man (right and left) dropped to the floor of a New York City subway train and requires emergency medical treatment. It was not known if the man had the coronavirus, which has gripped the city in fear and required all New Yorkers to stay home. The man 'gasped real loud' before he collapsed, says witness Richard Prado. The man's condition after the fall was not known.

It seems the NYPD will stop you at the 59th Street bridge on your way in, ask you why you're entering and then take your temperature. The answer 'home health aide' is acceptable. By implication they won't let you out either - but I don't know if they've even checking that.

EDIT: this has been going on for over a week now

Snake Plissken isn't dead. He's just old and fat.

It does seem like hoarding, but maybe not.
It's been many years since I had a Mountain Dew.

Blaaargh to Mountain Dew.

You're much closer to Ground Zero than I am. Pandemonium? Boils and blood? Raining toads, cats laying down with dogs, that kind of thing?

Or relatively normal if a little quiet, like up here in Dutchess county?

Does anyone know anyone that has Covid 19?

Hardly any street traffic for one thing.
No paper products whatsoever in Walgreen's.
At the liquor store, customers were not allowed to touch bottles.
Other than that, it's quiet as up where you are.

uhh..... Planet Fitness is only ten bucks a month, I'm just saying. last thing those two blubbasaurs need is cases of soda. Maybe the cost savings of avoiding the soda would permit them to buy actual pants.

And the mullet-pony-tail thing. He played with different styles and one day looked in the mirror and said "damn ! that's it! now it's perfect ...."

We know a couple who decided they were going to a farmer’s market today. Needless to say, those places are normally packed tight with people. This couple were also in the process of building a new house. Of course that all came to a halt and now they are pissed that construction stopped.

It is hard to believe that some humans can’t see the predicament we are all in. They have their blinders on and only are looking at their selfish feelings. It actually makes me feel good I am isolated from others right now.
