The world shuts down: Map shows how a third of the global population - 3BILLION people - are now under coronavirus lockdown

Coronavirus has now hit every continent except Antarctica with cases reported in virtually every country, prompting governments to place a third of the world's population in lockdown. The map shows countries in red which have announced restrictions on the movements of all or most of their citizens around the clock to slow the spread of coronavirus. Those in amber have restricted citizens for only part of the day - such as evening curfews - or in only parts of the country. Countries in green have either light restrictions or no restrictions on movement, though may have enacted other measures such as border closures and international flight bans.

Rwandan man who breached coronavirus lockdown killed by crocodile
crocodile-corona-01.jpg

A man in Rwanda violated lockdown orders amid the coronavirus outbreak to go fishing – but was killed and eaten by an crocodile, according to a report.

He had broken the stay-home rule, he’s among very few people here who are not cooperating with the lockdown to stop the virus,” Alice Kayitesi, mayor of the southern Kamonyi district, told the BBC.

The unidentified man was attacked by the croc on Wednesday in the Nyabarongo river, the news outlet reported.

The African country of some 12 million people has confirmed 40 cases of COVID-19, the highest in the region, though no deaths have been reported.
I guess there is some justice left in the world.

Man, 26, who shared a Snapchat video of himself licking toiletries in Walmart while taunting 'who's scared of coronavirus?' is ARRESTED and charged with making a terrorist threat

Cody Pfister, 26, of Warrenton, Missouri, uploaded the video to Snapchat on March 11 and was charged on Tuesday with 'knowingly causing a false belief or fear that a condition involving danger to life existed.' Warrenton police said they had received complaints from around the world including the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands and said it takes these concerns 'extremely seriously.' Pfister, who has previous convictions for burglary and theft, is the latest to get into trouble with the law in a worrying trend seeing younger generations mocking the deadly virus on social media.

Wednesday has been deadliest day in reported coronavirus deaths in US

More than 200 deaths from Covid-19 were reported Wednesday in the United States -- a new high for fatalities recorded in a single day.

The dramatic spike brought the number of novel coronavirus deaths since the outbreak reached the United States in late January to at least 921. Sunday morning -- less than four days ago -- the nationwide total was 326 deaths, according to CNN data derived from state reports.

US must go into full lock-down. If you don't do it now, you'll pay later 100 times higher price, same as Italy 700+ dead every day.

Kay, I know most people have larger concerns right now, But in the U.S we are all about to get free money.

Coronavirus stimulus payouts: When will I get my check? How much money?

Hmm... I'm wondering if this will cause inflation and actually hurt the economy more.
But, I'm no financial expert. Opinion | This Stimulus Bill Will Not Save the Economy From Collapse

However, there are people out there this could help so I'm just gonna exercise my right to remain silent.
Dejan is right - a complete national lock-down is our only hope of stemming the tide of this thing, and I just explained why that is in this post.

In order to do that, American citizens need to temporarily replace their wage income with government aid. And since we've all paid far more than this sum in taxes over the years - and gotten virtually nothing of benefit in return for those taxes, it's not a lot to ask. And this isn't just about money - money that needs to circulate in order to prevent a complete collapse of the US economy; this is more importantly about making a national lock-down possible so we can have a fighting chance to save millions of American lives from a gruesome death.

And if you read that article you provided (Opinion | This Stimulus Bill Will Not Save the Economy From Collapse), you'd know that the author not only supports the wage relief program that will pay US workers to stay at home right now - he's also advocating for several trillion dollars in spending for major infrastructure projects. His argument isn't that the wage relief program is a bad idea; his argument is that the government needs to spend far more money on long-term stimulus because the bill that just passed is nowhere near enough to prevent another Great Depression. Looking at the numbers, it looks like he's absolutely right.

Don't be so hard on yourself G; what we're going through right now is immeasurably horrific and traumatizing, and if you weren't fraying around the edges then I'd have to wonder if you're even human. But you are, and under 99% of the circumstances in life, that leads you to be a very compassionate and thoughtful guy.

So cut yourself a break; you can always make amends. Simply apologizing to your mother will turn that around 180 degrees, and Roxy has already forgiven you.

Don't beat yourself up; we're all coping with this shitty situation in our own ways - some good, some bad. What counts is what you do next, and the stronger person you'll be once you get through this.

I have been looking at the daily new case graphs for various western countries, after first noticing something in the British reporting of this on Public Health England's dashboard:

Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS

There was a pronounced dip in reported cases on the 22nd of March. It occurs to me that it was a Sunday. So I looked at graphs for other countries and noticed that many of them had Sunday dips (or Saturday dips, as in the US, or both days in the case of Germany), despite the fact that the overall trend is exponentially upwards in each case. So it looks like the authorities in many places are making less of an effort to report cases on Sundays, likely due to staffing issues. This is reminiscent of studies which have shown that there tend to be worse outcomes for those who have surgery on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

I don't wish to sound like I am whinging as I am not directly contributing to the fight against the spread of the virus, and people need time off, even if they are involved with it. It is just an interesting observation, and something to consider when reading reports of new case counts. If a news outlet reports a dip, you might first ask yourself whether it is weekend data, before getting your hopes up about the actual trajectory of the epidemic.

I've noticed something along those lines as well as I have also noticed the infected numbers climbing by over 100,000 every two days, 50,000+ a day worldwide but its beginning to speed up in the past couple days, probably because of its relentless spreading across the US and Canada, and now in Australia more after gaining a foothold in those countries...

This is why I think, sometimes we should have a Sad Emoji as an appreciation option. Though, there isn't a lot of times situations call for it. I feel lately, There have been a lot of instances where it would have been useful.

I agree the 2T stimulus is not enough and also not every American that needs it will get the money promised either, it always happens...It seems like this government thinks it can just rush this virus out the door over soft policies and soft attempts to stop it along with a bit of wishful thinking, they do not realize that they are not in control of this thing, nothing short of a total Nationwide lock down will get this thing under control...

Georgia's hardest-hit hospital says their intensive care units are filled with 'critically ill' coronavirus patients

A southwest Georgia hospital system that's reporting about a fourth of the state's coronavirus deaths now says one hospital has reached capacity in three ICU units. The three intensive care units within the system's hardest-hit hospital in Albany are filled with "critically ill Covid-19 patients," Phoebe Putney Health System said in a news release Wednesday. A fourth ICU was previously opened to care for patients not infected with the virus. The system has reported 12 deaths. At least 47 people have died in the state.

"As this public health crisis in southwest Georgia gets more severe, we have been reaching out to other hospitals in our part of the state," the system's CEO, Scott Steiner, said. "I am pleased that every one of our regional partners we spoke to in the last 24 hours agreed to assist by accepting patient transfers from us." Inside Albany's Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, 35 patients have tested positive. About 90 are awaiting test results

Steiner, the leader of the health system, told CNN last week they began seeing an influx of patients in the second week of March. When that happened, they went through six months' worth of supplies in less than a week, he said.

To help their masks last longer -- a supply which was quickly vanishing -- Steiner said a team of staff members were sewing masks together using surgical sheets. They were hoping to make about 200,000 of those, he said.

Pennsylvania supermarket says coughing 'prank' prompts trashing of $35G in produce, other items

A grocery store in Pennsylvania says it was forced to trash an estimated $35,000 in produce and other items Wednesday after a customer coughed all over them amid growing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

The woman came into Gerrity's Supermarket in Hanover Township around 2:20 p.m. and "proceeded to purposely cough" on the store's fresh produce as well as a small section of its bakery, meat case, and grocery shelves, according to the store's co-owner Joe Fasula.

He described it as a "twisted prank."

"While there is little doubt this woman was doing it as a very twisted prank, we will not take any chances with the health and well-being of our customers," Fasula said. "We estimate the value to be well over $35,000."

Fasula said the mystery cougher isn't believed to be infected and was labeled "a chronic problem in the community" by police. He added that the woman hadn't been in the store before and police were contacted after employees got her out as fast as possible.

The case has been "escalated" to the District Attorney's Office, which will be pursuing criminal charges, he said.

Hanover police later announced in a news release that the suspect was identified and was undergoing a mental health evaluation at a local hospital. Criminal charges will also be filed, per the department.
