One thing I learned last month was that there is something called the Global Health Security index (ghsindex.org), which is a multinational ranking of nations in terms of their pandemic preparedness. Let's have a look at it:

View attachment 9256

Does this bear any relation to how well these nations are responding to this pandemic? South Korea is in ninth place, eight places behind the United States, at number one. Singapore and Taiwan not even in the top 15?

To me it does not appear the US was properly prepared for this pandemic, this country has all but lost the fight to contain the virus and people are not cooperating to stay indoors and away from one another...When I read that military commanders are sealing themselves in Cheyenne Mountain and two of the US Navy's aircraft carriers are grounded because of the coronavirus, those two incidents alone doesn't give me much comfort that the US was prepared for this...

PANIC? - PANIC? - PANIC? - STOP!!!

You will weaken your immune system by excess stress and worry and increase your risk.

Here is a video that should put your mind at ease {if you believe it - I don't}

Still in my study of conspiracy theories I've found there is at least some truth in many of them.

So take this with a grain of salt - still even if it is BS it is still interesting:

Truly amazing! So the US is the best prepared country in the world? That's encouraging... Why is Japan not on the list? For some reason, I would have expected them to be #1.

WTF?...

Furious Cuomo blasts Trump's 'anti-American' idea for a New York quarantine and calls it a 'federal declaration of WAR' in extraordinary outburst after president threatened to cordon off the Tri-state area

'If you start walling off areas all across the country it would just be totally bizarre, counter-productive, anti-American, anti-social,' said Cuomo in an interview with CNN on Saturday. 'This is a civil war kind of discussion,' he said. 'I don't believe that any administration could be serious about physical lockdowns of states.' Trump said earlier on Saturday that he is considering quarantining New York, and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey, in a desperate effort to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Britain's oldest coronavirus victim: 108-year-old great-grandmother who survived two world wars and Spanish flu dies 24 hours after testing positive for infection

Hilda Churchill (right), 108, survived two world wars and the Spanish flu but she tragically passed away on Saturday less than a day after she tested positive for the virus. She had been in isolation at her care home for more than a week but began showing minor symptoms three or four days ago. Her family (left) was hoping she would pull through in time to celebrate her 109th birthday in just a few weeks time on April 5. But Mrs Churchill (inset with her husband in 1929) passed away at Kenyon Lodge care home, in Salford, Greater Manchester, on Saturday morning less than 24 hours after being tested positive for Covid-19.

Illinois baby under the age of ONE dies after testing positive for coronavirus - the youngest person to have died after contracting disease yet

An infant in Illinois under the age of one has died after testing positive for coronavirus. 'There has never been a case of COVID-19 death in an infant,' said Illinois Public Health Director, Dr Ngozi Ezike. The child was among 13 new deaths recorded in Illinois, which now has a coronavirus death toll of 47. During a press conference on Saturday, Governor Jay Pritzker (seen in the inset photo in Chicago on Friday) said: 'Upon hearing it, I admit I was shaken. We should grieve with our family of state employees, with the many people we've already lost to this virus, young and old.' The above image shows a Chicago resident carrying shopping bags in the city on Saturday. Children have made up a small fraction of coronavirus cases worldwide. A letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine by Chinese researchers earlier this month reported the death of a 10-month-old with COVID-19. The infant had a bowel blockage and organ failure, and died four weeks after being hospitalized.

Cat in Belgium first known to test positive for coronavirus: report

A cat in Belgian has tested positive for the coronavirus after catching the potentially deadly bug from an infected owner, officials said Friday. The sick pet in Liège tested positive after showing classic symptoms of COVID-19 — including difficulty breathing — a week after its owner first fell sick, health officials told a press conference, the Brussels Times reports.

8 strains of the coronavirus are circling the globe. Here's what clues they're giving scientists.

At least eight strains of the coronavirus are making their way around the globe, creating a trail of death and disease that scientists are tracking by their genetic footprints.

While much is unknown, hidden in the virus's unique microscopic fragments are clues to the origins of its original strain, how it behaves as it mutates and which strains are turning into conflagrations while others are dying out thanks to quarantine measures.

Huddled in once bustling and now almost empty labs, researchers who oversaw dozens of projects are instead focused on one goal: tracking the current strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that cause the illness COVID-19.

Labs around the world are turning their sequencing machines, most about the size of a desktop printer, to the task of rapidly sequencing the genomes of virus samples taken from people sick with COVID-19. The information is uploaded to a website called NextStrain.org that shows how the virus is migrating and splitting into similar but new subtypes.

While researchers caution they're only seeing the tip of the iceberg, the tiny differences between the virus strains suggest shelter-in-place orders are working in some areas and that no one strain of the virus is more deadly than another. They also say it does not appear the strains will grow more lethal as they evolve.

“The virus mutates so slowly that the virus strains are fundamentally very similar to each other,” said Charles Chiu, a professor of medicine and infectious disease at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

In Iran, false belief a poison fights virus kills hundreds

Standing over the still body of an intubated 5-year-old boy wearing nothing but a plastic diaper, an Iranian health care worker in a hazmat suit and mask begged the public for just one thing: Stop drinking industrial alcohol over fears about the new coronavirus.

The boy, now blind after his parents gave him toxic methanol in the mistaken belief it protects against the virus, is just one of hundreds of victims of an epidemic inside the pandemic now gripping Iran.

Iranian media report nearly 300 people have been killed and more than 1,000 sickened so far by ingesting methanol across the Islamic Republic, where drinking alcohol is banned and where those who do rely on bootleggers. An Iranian doctor helping the country's Health Ministry told The Associated Press on Friday the problem was even greater, giving a death toll of around 480 with 2,850 people sickened.

The poisonings come as fake remedies spread across social media in Iran, where people remain deeply suspicious of the government after it downplayed the crisis for days before it overwhelmed the country.

“Other countries have only one problem, which is the new coronavirus pandemic. But we are fighting on two fronts here,” said Dr. Hossein Hassanian, an adviser to Iran’s Health Ministry who gave the higher figures to the AP. "We have to both cure the people with alcohol poisoning and also fight the coronavirus.”

Alright, so most of you have probably missed this because not a single one of our lying, bought, corrupt fake news outlets will talk about it in these stark terms - but here's what just happened in Washington:

Our totally corrupt POS politicians just voted to put every American citizen into an additional $18,000 of debt, and $16,800 of that debt is part of another gigantic handout to the multi-billion-dollar corporations that control our government...while $1200 of that debt is a one-time payment to the taxpayer. That's $1 for you...and $14 for the corporations - and it's us and our children who have to repay that debt.

They tied the two things together to give themselves political cover for financially raping us all to death: they could've made them into two separate deals - a deal right now to save the working class while we wait out this pandemic, and a separate deal to bolster the corporations. But if they'd done that, everyone would've been asking "why the fuck are the corporations getting 14X the money that the American people are getting?" And there's no good answer to that question, other than "because our entire government is a kleptocracy that works for the corporations and the elites, not the people." So they leveraged our fear and desperation to fuck us over, again, just like they did back in 2007-2009 when the reckless profiteering and fraudulent practices of the banks crashed the global economy and the government bailed them out, instead of us...and then the banks turned around and foreclosed on millions of our homes anyway.

Ever notice how the psychopaths controlling our society preach the virtues of "free-market capitalism," until there's a crisis of some kind - and then it's unlimited socialism for the billionaires and corporations...and rugged individualism and "pull yourself by your bootstraps" for the working class?

That's because our entire society is giant brainwashing project that exploits the people in order to further enrich the aristocrats and their corporations, which is why the wealth inequality in our country now rivals that of Zimbabwe, and all of our infrastructure is neglected and collapsing, and the quality of life is plummeting, and why extravagantly profitable corporations like Amazon and General Electric paid less federal taxes last year than you did.

Here's what should've happened, in a representational Republic (the kind that our Founding Father intended for us) - all of that money should've been set aside to provide monthly payments to the people of this country, and the corporations that spent all of their money on buying back their own stocks instead of accruing a rainy-day fund for a crisis of this magnitude, should be allowed to go bankrupt. And when the crisis is over, new business leaders could buy up their assets and rebuild under new, better, wiser management. That's free-market capitalism. But that's not the system we have: we have socialism for the plutocrats, and capitalism for the working class.

You are not completely right @Thomas R. Morrison, although I am center-left as you are. These corporations are the engine of the economy, they employ millions of people. When gov. is pumping cash into corporations it is saving the engine. Once virus is defeated you just re-start the engine and you start re-building the society. That's much better situation than having no engine at all and starting back from the stone age.

Through history nations lose large part of population and always recover very quickly. Think American Civil War, or WWII when Germany lost 1/6th of it's population, or Soviets lost 15M people, or England lost 40% of population to cholera and recovered in less than a century, Serbia lost 40% of population in WWI etc.

If many people die it's no big deal. Surviving generation will have lots of sex and in no time we'll be back to the per-epidemic numbers. Same thing happened across the Europe and US after WWII. That's what term "baby boomers" stands for. I just wish I am a bit younger so I can help them out with re-population :)

ON THE PLUS SIDE ... Coronavirus is going to do wanders for Global Warming. Price of oil is already down to $10 per barrel from $60+. Less economic activity will help Global Cooling. Maybe this epidemic is Earth's way of saying "Enough is Enough" :)

Rats swarm New Orleans' streets as coronavirus precautions leave them empty

Precautions put in place to slow the rise of coronavirus cases in New Orleans has inadvertently led to a rat problem for the Louisiana city. With restaurants closed save for take-out service, far less food waste is being discarded in the city's alleyways, driving the local rodent population out into the open to search for scraps.

New Orleans' famous Mardi Gras celebration brought thousands of tourists to the city, and medical experts believe it might be a big factor in the city's COVID-19 outbreak. Now with Bourbon Street's famous bars all closed and people social distancing, videos show dozens of rats scurrying through the empty streets.

"I turn the corner, there's about 30 rats at the corner, feasting on something in the middle of the street," one local restauranteur told CBS News' Omar Villafranca. He said he had "never" seen anything like it before.

To control the population, city crews started putting bait in the gutters and placing rat traps throughout the French Quarter neighborhood. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said the rats were going "crazy."

Claudia Regal, head of the local pest control board, expressed concern about the possible infections the rat infestation could spread to the local homeless population.

"There are pathogens in these rodents. Fortunately, we don't see many of the health outcomes. We don't have very many disease cases that are actually related to rodents. But the potential is there," she said during a press conference.

She called it a "difficult time to be a rat" due to the limited availability of food scraps.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is a complete arse, he is completely disconnected from this crisis although he would have you believe he is on top of everything and has New York in his best interest...New York must be quarantined as well as many other cities and states in the US, it is NOT anti-American, it is NOT illegal, but it WILL save lives...We must stop ALL inter-state travel immediately, I cannot believe the ignorance, arrogance, and stupidity of our local, state, and federal officials, we should have shut down the country three weeks ago, but no its better to squabble over who has the better idea and who gets the spotlight for it, my god man...

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is another complete arse, he does NOT have North Carolina in his best interest, given what's occurring in other parts of the country, he waits until we start having deaths in this state to give the stay at home order and even then its not immediate...He gave the order this past Friday but signals it does not commence until Monday (tomorrow) at 5 pm, what the hell, let's give people more time to spread this deadly virus further before shutting down, sounds reasonable eh (end sarcasm)...We already know President Trump is an arse, no need to flog that horse anymore more right now...

Our elected officials across the board, local, state, and federal levels have failed the American people, they have doomed countless lives and do not seem to even care, so its no wonder masses of people still conduct business as usual...Its up to every individual to protect themselves and each other from this calamity, sharing information and updates in this thread and the couple other active threads is doing much more than our elected officials are doing IMO...Rant over, sorry...

New figures offer a glimmer of hope that self-isolating is working as infection rates drop for the second day in a row

The UK coronavirus death toll has risen by 209 in 24 hours from 1,019 to 1,228. There are now 19,522 confirmed cases nationwide, up from 17,089 yesterday. Today's increase is the second biggest Britain has seen so far, but with 51 fewer deaths than yesterday, there could be hopes that the figures are beginning to plateau. The vast majority of cases and deaths were in England, with 190 dead there, aged between 39 and 105. All but four of them, aged between 57 and 87, had underlying health conditions.

Europe Wasn’t Ready for Coronavirus. It May Never Fully Recover.

A month ago, while the coronavirus was invading the Old Continent, we Europeans were busy with much more important matters than ‘a little flu.’ In early March, Spain’s Communist government was focused on passing its aberrant “sexual freedom law.” With a name like that, you might think that we Spaniards have been procreating by pollination for 2000 years. Meanwhile, the Swiss press, strangely enough, seemed intent on overthrowing the Spanish monarchy, as if we hadn’t had enough of church-burning and coldblooded murder at the hands of the Second Republic. And a few days earlier, on March 2nd, the big issue in Switzerland was a referendum to pass a law banning any comments or attitudes against gay-friendly policies. It brings to mind the warning that Gómez Dávila, Colombian intellectual, gave us towards the end of the 20th century: “Despite what they teach us today, easy sex isn’t the solution to all our problems.”

In Sweden, Germany, and half of Europe, the front-page news on March 7th was another issue: (again) Greta Thunberg’s statements about the need to impose measures that reward women over men. It was around those days that the Dutch government announced a bill that would allow the euthanasia of any elderly person “tired of living.” It comes as no surprise that the Netherlands doesn’t seem too concerned about this coronavirus business. The last we heard from Holland is that the official channels are telling people: “Don’t bring weak patients and old people to hospital.” Looks like they’re only interested in saving the lives of young people. I guess they’re more photogenic and look better on postcards of tulip fields.

In Germany, at the beginning of March, the controversy that dominated the nation was whether to erect a huge statue of Lenin in a small North Rhineland town. Interesting. Perhaps it was to scare the virus off. But Scotland is definitely my favorite. As the pandemic began to spread dramatically, the main debate in Scotland was the imperative need for a new government law to provide free tampons and sanitary pads. The issue went beyond Scotland and was the subject of some very intellectually dense op-eds in the broader European press. It was clear that the festival of incompetence and unicorn politics was to go on right up until the last minute before cataclysm.

Everyone wanted to drag out that last drink on the Titanic. Nobody wanted to go to sleep. Neither did the U.N. On March 10, with 118,100 diagnosed and 4,262 dead from coronavirus in Europe, the U.N. held a press conference . . . to commit to the political and economic fight against the climate emergency! Yes, it would appear that the plan is to leave the pangolins a beautiful and temperate planet. Thus, secretary-general Antonio Guterres trumpeted a report at us, saying that climate change acceleration will trigger heat and dengue deaths in Africa, and cause drought and flash floods in countries such as Spain, without explaining how it’s possible to die from thirst and drown at the same time. Of course, we can’t really expect any explanations from an ex-president of the Socialist International who praises the policies of the Cuban regime and now hints that China’s response to the coronavirus is the example to follow. Someone should make it clear to him, however, that China will be the example to follow in a health crisis when it ceases to be a Communist dictatorship, and when the Chinese end their unfortunate preference for meat from exotic jungle animals slaughtered in front of them at wet markets.

In the midst of this festival of frivolity, harsh reality landed in Europe. In just ten days, we discovered that neither the tampon issue, nor the participation of transsexuals in the Olympic Games, nor the climate emergency were real problems, nor emergencies, nor anything of the sort. They were just fictitious problems, the pastimes of a generation that hadn’t known tragedy.

The reactions of politicians in Europe reflect the bewilderment of those who were living in the Matrix and have just been awakened. Most governments in Europe have moved from denial to chaos. But probably the most vile reaction has been that of the Social Communist government in Spain, which encouraged Spaniards to participate massively in the March 8 feminist rallies, the next day hiding reports that the coronavirus was already out of control in the country — something they may well have to answer for in court.
