How is The Coronavirus affecting your life?

Telecommuting for work and school just got a big kick in the pants and I hope that's something that sticks rather than falls by the wayside. If for no other reason think about the impact it'll have on fossil fuel usage. What was once tolerated and in some cases sneered at will hopefully become the new norm.

As a grizzled old telecom guy I couldn't help but think of Cisco Telepresence. You plunk down about $35K and you have a nice theater suite in which you can have video calls to other nice expensive video suites. They are useful but a luxury gadget, almost a status symbol for many organizations. You really have to work to justify it.

Except the shit hit the fan and everyone is using cheap or free stuff and mobile devices to video themselves silly and you can't even go in to the facilities where all that expensive equipment is sitting. If you're a Cisco salesman I wonder exactly what pitch you'll use next time you have to talk to someone about that pile of technology.

Oh, and for interior design folks - kudos to those who have arranged their books, posters, whatever to be seen behind them. Should be a sniglet a term - for that. You know damned well it's given considerable thought. Anderson Cooper broadcasting from home, I must say, looked particularly Vanderbilty.

I suspect this will be worse than the Spanish flu when things are said and done.

I think fifty plus million is way big.

Many things being done, people pulling together and even hybrid breathers being mass produced by an accumulation of car manufacturers. Red and green card system is a great idea for the elder neighbours. Stick it in the window and the rest speaks for itself. They list what the problem is on the red one and it's another little problem solver.

It is starving.

I think the most problem of fear is people accepting that these hard times are really upon us. We have never known a hardship quite like this one, But History has known much hardship. People fear to accept the new normal, People don't want to accept what is to come. But it is here.

I am afraid, But so are others. There is comfort in the words, None of us were promised tomorrow, Many people that fear this Coronavirus were fated to pass away by other means Because Death doesn't stop for anyone or anything.

I am not tying a pretty ribbon around death, I am only expressing, Death has always been with us. Now, It simply possesses a new face to fear.

This is bad. But there will be survivors, And someday, This new face of fear will end, But Death and sorrow will always exist, With new faces to always fear. So then Must we always live in fear?

Like Any other emotion even in the worst times, Fear comes in waves and goes. We do as we have always done, We enjoy the happiness we can find, And we Heed caution, Life is truly at its philosophical core, Not very different than before this virus.

We will be happy, We will be Sad, We will know Fear, We will know Relief. Some day, This threat will end. And Another will Begin.

Quite a lot of video showing bodies being loaded into portable freezers. It occurred to me that morgues generally aren't that large to begin with, even in Hospice facilities. I've been in quite a few so this is direct observation not conjecture.

It does however, make for great content and serves to keep up the skeer.

NYC morgues near capacity, DHS briefing warns

The Department of Homeland Security has been briefed that New York City’s morgues are nearing capacity, according to a department official and a second person familiar with the situation.

Officials were told that morgues in the city are expected to reach capacity next week, per the briefing. A third person familiar with the situation in New York said some of the city’s hospital morgues hit capacity in the past seven days. And a FEMA spokesperson told POLITICO that New York has asked for emergency mortuary assistance. Hawaii and North Carolina have asked for mortuary help as well, and the disaster response agency is currently reviewing the requests, according to the spokesperson.

If the available morgue space in New York City fills up as the number of COVID-19 deaths increases, federal help will be available, a former senior administration official said, noting that the George W. Bush administration sent mortuary assistance in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Department of Health and Human Services oversees the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Teams, which can help set up temporary morgues. The teams operate in response to requests from local authorities.

For now, city officials do not seem especially alarmed. Aja Worthy-Davis, a spokesperson for the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, said concerns about morgue capacity may be unfounded. OCME’s morgues can store up to 900 bodies across all five boroughs, she said.

“We have the ability to expand pretty dramatically,” she said. “If you look back at what we did during 9/11, we have the ability to create mobile stations that allow us to house bodies if we run out of space.”

New York City has not dealt with mass casualties at the rate as Covid-19 in recent memory, however.

“All hospitals within the city tend to have small morgue spaces, so it’s possible that with the capacity of hospitals in New York City, there may be an expectation … that they’ll run out of morgue space,” Worthy-Davis added.

I'm one who thinks that we will be back to near normal sooner than we think. There will be changes, working from home will be one as it helps on so many fronts and a more contact less process where it can be implemented. Cash has had its life cut shorter by this also I think.

I haven't suffered fear with this, had a surreal feel for sure and as you say, the accepting what we are facing has had the time to sink in more now.

There is a big difference between this one and the other one. Spread rate and vehicle is the same but the way it hit was harder than this one. OK in the morning, I'll in the afternoon and dead by the evening was the fear they endured, we don't share that. Young fit men. If that one was to be compared then we would be talking about having problems lighting the pyres.

It turned them blue with an odour of musty hay as they exhaled.

Death I like to consider when the time is right and I don't feel in any great danger with how things are set right now. The vulnerable are shielded and the world has slowed to a pace where it will struggle to move. Shark like. I hated the not knowing what I truly felt but today it feels calmer, this could have rampaged through us in a far more devastating manor.

Our mortality defines us.

When a pet dies I often say they if they lived as long as we do we wouldn't appreciate them the same way. This is why you don't get a parrot as a pet - I bet more than one suffered parrot misfortune for being mouthy while having outlived its owner. ... but I digress.

Death is always there, a companion not a foe.

My island hath become a prison. When the rest of my traveling equipment arrives I'll be abandoning this beast system completely.
I shall wander the hills, the forests and the fields, striving to find my way to the isle named after my ancestor Lewis/Lugus, the great celtic king.
I'd like to build a cozy little hobbit hole in the side of a hill and just live out my days in peaceful isolation, bothering none.

I just came back from the supermarket. I was pleased to see large stacks of boxes in many isles, waiting to be unpacked.

I just came from the store and it was pretty well stocked, but they were out of eggs.

I also went to the grocery store today and pet store, well...actually I went to 9 grocery stores and 2 walmarts today...I stopped at the first grocery closest to my house and purchased about a 2 week supply of food and took that home...Then I decided to venture out and see if I could find toilet paper since the grocery store I was first at this morning didn't have any...I went out about 25 miles northeast and hit every grocery store and walmart along the way, none of them had toilet paper and only one had paper towels...

There was a pet superstore I came across in that drive so I stopped there and stocked up on Kobi's food and bought him some new toys...He was riding with me so he came in the pet store with me and picked out a couple toys he wanted lol...Not a soul in the pet store either, just the woman behind the counter with a plexiglass shield in front of her...Two of the grocery stores had plexiglass shields up at the registers in front of the attendant...The new norm?...

Needless to say, the reason I ventured out on a toilet paper hunt is because I was running low...Three rolls left it's time to get more, ordered some online, won't get that delivery until May 22nd...So after coming up empty on that road trip I texted mom, she has plenty in her garage and hooked me up to get me by for a little while lol...

You should try to order those jumbo toilet paper rolls online. The Plexiglas is also in the store I was at and they removed those rubber stoppers that divide customer groceries because everyone touches them. In the store and at the post office they have markers taped to the floor to denote a six foot distance between people. I felt I was standing on a board game.

I was at work today for a couple hours early in the morning and heard through the grapevine that a temp in another building across the street stopped coming to work 7 days ago because he found out his girl tested positive for Covid-19...So there's a possibility that temp unknowingly exposed many employees in that building...

Also at work today I also was given a paper written and signed by the owner of the company stating the status of the business as an essential business and citing the North Carolina statute covering the status, and it was suggested to keep it in my car and show to any authorities that may pull me over whilst driving to or from work, giving me permission to drive on the road during those travel time periods...North Carolina isn't closing roads or imposing curfews but there may be further restrictions in the near future...

I was up at 2 am this morning at work, will be leaving before noon today, right now up in my office, two people called out from the building across the street with symptoms of Covid-19...I have been severely limiting my time at the Plant, I don't want to be here at all, but only coming in when they absolutely need my expertise...Ugh, trying times...

I won't be leaving my house again until Monday next week, I was asked to come in Monday to work for a little bit that morning and as long as things are not crazy around here I will, but if by Monday the virus is rampant all through this area where I live I will not go anywhere...

Just thinking out loud and I know some won't agree, but I find it both disturbing and distasteful for people to use a crisis such as this to promote and push their religious views upon others...

Nice to be in control of your exposure for a period of time. I feel pretty surrounded. Just up the street is my doctors. Five hundred meters away and they are going to use the small car park as a testing center for those who are suspected to have it or had it. Not just NHS staff but any showing the signs. Not in place yet but my sources are good and from a hospital worker.

Nice.

Yeah and it appears that what @Thomas R. Morrison said about flattening the curve in the rate of new infections will be much needed in the near future, we need to ride this out for about 6 weeks or so I'm guessing, by then the peak death rate will have hopefully passed, but its going to get really ugly though about midway through the next six weeks, its not the time to let our guards down yet...

Unfortunately I think that six weeks is an overly optimistic projection: history shows us that highly infectious pathogens like this one linger within the population for 12-18 months or more. So when the restrictions are lifted after getting through a really nasty outbreak like this one, it comes back and you get another huge and horrible outbreak all over again.

So while I see the light at the end of the tunnel with the current outbreak, I'm very concerned that we'll rush to return to normality and unleash another wave of horror. My hope now is that we'll beat this current widespread outbreak and then maintain enough of our countermeasures to keep it at low levels until a cure is available - and those monoclonal antibodies being developed by Distributed Bio could be just the trick to inoculate the population before a second major outbreak comes around.

I only venture out these days when I need to make a visit to the doctors office. Yesterday was such a day. A fun trip to the urologist. With an enlarged prostate you can imagine what transpired. I ached in the nether regions all day long. My wife has to be my driver until I recover from my spine surgery. Actually I have accumulated more health problems since they have removed my spinal jewelry. I am gritting my teeth most every day.

We have had an additional health problem in our family. My sister-in-law felt intense pain in her side this past weekend. It ended up being a burst appendix. This was extremely bad timing. My brother-in-law had to drop off his wife off at the hospital door. No entry into the hospital these days. My wife and brother-in-law were on edge the past couple of days. The operation was successful but my sister-in-law is still in the hospital by herself. She is alive but she isn’t a happy camper.

Just to think, a few weeks ago all of us could stroll into the hospital, no problems. Not these days. I am trying to help my wife get through these difficult times. She is a person who likes to be busy each and every day. Staying at home is not working out for her. We try to go to our respective corners of the house in order not to annoy each other anymore than possible. I’m sure many of you are running into such problems. Let me know how you are making out.

We are just in the beginning phase of this isolation. We have a long way to go yet. Ouch!!

Well you have my best wishes , that is a lot to be going on with already and a good reminder for those lucky enough to isolate in relative peace to count those blessings.

Every last boring one of them.
