Beaches across the nation are packed: Thousands ignore social distancing to sunbathe in temperatures of up to 95 degrees and relax on the sand as governors' pleas to stay home fall on deaf ears

From New York to California, people ignored social distancing to hit the beach Saturday as temperatures heated up. Los Angeles braced for a heatwave this weekend which had people keen to get back to the beach as photos show beachgoers sunbathing and relaxing. Meanwhile in New York, a spring day after a week of rain saw people out and about on Coney Island and Long Beach, despite the city being the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. And in Florida, popular beaches like Daytona and Cocoa Beach, continue to allow people to walk, surf, bike or swim, while promoting staying a safe six-foot distance from others. This comes in direct defiance to governors Andrew Cuomo (New York) and Gavin Newsom's (California) strict orders to stay-at-home as coronavirus infection rates continue to rise nationwide. People were seen relaxing on the sand on Tybee Beach in Georgia Saturday. Photos show bikini-clad beachgoers standing at an open food or beverage window.

China lashes out at US, claims country is 'lying through their teeth' on coronavirus; threatens Australia

China's foreign ministry on Tuesday accused the United States of "lying through their teeth" and suggested the country mind its own business as the war of words between the world's two biggest economic powers escalated.

"We advise American politicians to reflect on their own problems and try their best to control the [coronavirus] epidemic as soon as possible instead of continuing to play tricks to deflect blame," spokesman Geng Shuang said.

The comments came on the heels of President Trump suggesting in a press conference on Monday that the U.S. would be seeking "substantial" compensation for China's handling of the global pandemic.

"We are not happy with China," Trump said. "We are not happy with that whole situation because we believe it could have been stopped at the source. It could have been stopped quickly and it wouldn't have spread all over the world."

He added that the United States is considering several options to "hold them accountable."

When asked about a recent editorial in the German newspaper Bild that printed a mockup of a $162 billion bill to China for economic damages, Trump replied, "Germany's looking at things, and we're looking at things, and we're talking about a lot more money than Germany's talking about."

Trump, who has been criticized for downplaying the virus despite early warnings, has largely led the charge against China.

Australia has also been on the receiving end of Beijing's spiral. China's ambassador to Australia warned on Monday that the government's call for an independent international inquiry into the origins of the pandemic could lead to a Chinese boycott of Australian products.

"Maybe the ordinary people will say, 'Why should we drink Australian wine? Eat Australian beef?'" Ambassador Chen Jingye threatened, The Australian Financial Review reported.

Australian's foreign minister Marise Payne hit back, dismissing China's attempt at "economic coercion."

That didn't sit well with China, which prompted Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the Global Times, to tweet: "Let me give a 'coercion' to Australia. As its attitude toward China becomes worse and worse, Chinese companies will definitely reduce economic cooperation with Australia, and the number of Chinese students & visitors going to Australia will also decrease. Time will prove it all."

The Global Times is published by the People's Daily, the official newspaper of China's ruling Communist Party.

Thousands ignore stay-at-home order and cram along banks of the Hudson to watch Thunderbirds and Blue Angels dart across NYC's skies in honor of health care workers battling Covid-19

Pilots from the US Navy teamed up with the Air Force for the dazzling display over the Big Apple Tuesday to pay tribute to the healthcare workers fighting COVID-19 on the frontlines. But pictures show residents in New Jersey and New York ignored warnings to stay home, with huge crowds gathered to watch the flyover in both states. The Blue Angels tweeted Monday, telling people to 'refrain from traveling to see the flyover', writing: 'Residents should observe the flyover from the safety of their home-quarantine. Social distancing should be practiced at all times. Stay home and stay safe!'

In a earlier statement the Air Force and Navy had said they had partnered with local governments and media outlets to 'help ensure spectators follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention social distancing guidelines'. The Thunderbirds said the flyover would be 'a show of national solidarity' and 'collaborative salute from the Navy and Air Force to recognize healthcare workers, first responders, and other essential personnel while standing in solidarity with all Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic'.

Sweden records its deadliest week this century with 2,505 fatalities as it continues to resist coronavirus lockdown

Sweden recorded its deadliest week this century after 2,505 people died in a seven-day period earlier this month. The country has been the focus of global attention after it adopted a softer approach to combating coronavirus which did not involve imposing a full-scale lockdown.

But during the week before Easter - April 6 to 12 - the equivalent of 358 people died each day, according to figures from Statistics Sweden which were reported by media outlet The Local. The overall figure is almost 150 more deaths than in Sweden's second deadliest week in 2000, which saw 2,364 people die during the first week of the year.

The third and fourth highest death tolls since 2000 also occurred this year. There were 2,354 deaths between March 30 and April 5 and 2,310 deaths between April 13 and 19.

Statistician Tomas Johansson, from Statistics Sweden, told The Local: 'It's important to clearly state that these are preliminary statistics, and that the death toll especially for the most recent weeks will be revised upward.' While not all of recorded deaths will be as a result of the virus, it is likely it is responsible for the 'extra' deaths compared to other years.

Sweden's official death toll for coronavirus includes deaths in hospitals, care homes and those which happen elsewhere. This is made possible by the country having a register of deaths. New deaths are added to the Covid-19 count when it is found someone had the virus.

Top ER Doctor Who Treated Virus Patients Dies by Suicide

A top emergency room doctor at a Manhattan hospital that treated many coronavirus patients died by suicide Sunday, her father and the police said. Dr. Lorna M. Breen, medical director of the emergency department at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, died in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she was staying with family, her father said in an interview.

Tyler Hawn, a spokesman for the Charlottesville Police Department, said in an email that officers on Sunday responded to a call seeking medical assistance. “The victim was taken to UVA Hospital for treatment, but later succumbed to self-inflicted injuries,” Hawn said. Breen’s father, Dr. Philip C. Breen, said she had described devastating scenes of the toll the coronavirus took on patients.

“She tried to do her job, and it killed her,” he said.

Philip Breen said his daughter had contracted the coronavirus but had gone back to work after recuperating for about a week and a half. The hospital sent her home again, before her family intervened to bring her to Charlottesville, he said.

Lorna Breen, 49, did not have a history of mental illness, her father said. But he said that when he last spoke with her, she seemed detached, and he could tell something was wrong. She had described to him an onslaught of patients who were dying before they could even be taken out of ambulances.

“She was truly in the trenches of the front line,” he said.

Wow what a jump...

Britain's coronavirus death toll jumps by 3,811 to 26,097 as ministers include fatalities outside of hospitals in daily update for the first time - but the REAL toll is likely to be thousands higher because officials are only including lab-confirmed cases

The Department of Health has for the first time included people who died with the coronavirus in care homes or their own houses in its statistics and, as a result, the total death toll has surged by almost 4,000. However, the official figure is still not high enough to reflect reality. Every other set of statistics being published in Britain suggests that care homes account for significantly more victims than the Government is taking into account. This is because Whitehall won't include anyone who hasn't been tested in its data but, for the majority of the outbreak, has not allowed the routine testing of anyone outside of hospitals.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC), which regulates care homes, says more than 4,000 residents died between April 10 and 24 alone, while the Office for National Statistics puts the total figure higher than 6,000 and its records are already more than 10 days out of date. Records in Scotland today revealed that hospital deaths there now account for just 52 per cent of fatalities – whereas they make up 83 per cent of the total published by Downing Street - which could mean the true number of deaths across the UK is already 43,000.

I'm skeptical, But Here is this News. You will see more of this news in the coming hours. But This Remdesivir Drug seems to be pulling the worst-case scenario people back from the brink. It seems to be working in most cases. And To boot this Article, This very news as even caused the stock market to skyrocket.

Therein lies the problem, Is this a lie to help a flailing economy? Believe it or not, I've been studying this for a little bit, there are even "asinine butthole mascots" out there who are pissed off that the Antiviral Drug is working because with the recession in decline and about to end, that means no more free money from stimulus. Personally Who doesn't like free money? I like people not dying horrible deaths at mass better though.

Fauci praises remdesivir after data shows it speeds recovery

The US government’s leading infectious disease fighter said a new drug developed by Gilead Science had a “clear-cut, significant positive effect” in speeding up recovery in coronavirus victims, giving hope scientists may be able to develop a therapy to combat the pandemic. Anthony Fauci, a leading member of the White House’s coronavirus task force, cautioned the trial results for the antiviral drug remdesivir were not a “knockout”. But he compared it to the early anti-HIV drug AZT, which became the basis of future treatments for that virus. “We think it’s really opening the door to the fact that we now have the capability of treating [Covid-19],” Dr. Fauci said on Wednesday. “And I can guarantee you as more people, more companies, more investigators get involved it will get better and better.” The NIAID findings were announced on the same day a paper in a prestigious medical journal showed a different picture, however. It found remdesivir had failed to help patients in its first randomised clinical trial. The World Health Organization accidentally published results of the more skeptical study last week. The endorsement by Dr. Fauci and Gilead’s own statement that it had been notified of “positive data” from the study run by the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases sent Wall Street sharply higher, with the S&P 500 rising as much 3.1 percent. Shares in Gilead were up more than 6 percent. Gilead originally developed remdesivir as a drug for Ebola, but it was never approved © AFP The NIAID trial, which has yet to be peer-reviewed, showed a 31 per cent improvement in patients taking the drug compared with a placebo, Dr Fauci said, with victims recovering in 11 days on average rather than 15 days for the control group. Some 8 percent of the group taking remdesivir died, compared with 11 percent in the control group. “It is a very important proof of concept because what it is proving is that a drug can block this virus,” Dr Fauci said. The results from a trial in Wuhan, China — first reported by the Financial Times last week, now peer-reviewed and published in The Lancet — showed treatment with remdesivir did not speed recovery or reduce deaths from Covid-19. “Unfortunately, our trial found that while safe and adequately tolerated, remdesivir did not provide significant benefits over placebo,” said Bin Cao, a professor from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital and Capital Medical University in China, who led the research. But the Chinese trial of 237 patients did not finish enrolling, as there were not enough Covid-19 patients to study. Gilead said last week that the summary of the trial that was published early in error included “inappropriate characterizations” and noted that some data suggested there might be a “potential benefit for remdesivir, particularly among patients treated early in the disease”. Dr. Fauci said the NIAID data was announced before it had been fully peer-reviewed because there was an ethical obligation to notify all patients of the positive results so that those in the control group could take advantage of the therapy. “Whenever you have clear-cut evidence that a drug works, you have an ethical obligation to immediately allow the people in the placebo group know so they can have access,” he said. “We would have normally waited several days until the data gets further — dot the Is and cross the Ts . . . But the conclusion will not change.

We're seeing a climb in new cases and deaths again in the US, at least in the last 2 days, but I doubt it's because of the recent crowds going to the beaches and crowds of people protesting the lockdowns...I don't think we would see the fallout from those actions this quickly, but I feel certain we'll see a huge spike in new cases because of those things soon enough...

China lashes out at US, claims country is 'lying through their teeth' on coronavirus; threatens Australia

China's foreign ministry on Tuesday accused the United States of "lying through their teeth" and suggested the country mind its own business as the war of words between the world's two biggest economic powers escalated.

There is nothing wrong with that idea. China should definitely pay some form of compensation for the damage they caused.

We cannot rule out a man-made origin of this coronavirus. There are clear signs of a genetically-engineered viral agent and China’s novel coronavirus appears to satisfy these criteria.
  • A disease caused by an uncommon (unusual, rare, or unique) agent.
  • Lack of an epidemiological explanation, i.e. no clear idea of source.
  • An unusual manifestation and/or geographic distribution, such as race-specificity.
  • Multiple sources of infection.

This was such an alarming statement that I spent a couple of hours today checking it out, and it's not true - virologists discovered that the SARS and MERS coronaviruses induce antibodies that are detectable in the patient's blood for about 24 and 18 months [1], and it's believed that these antibodies confer immunity during that time, but this assumption is untested. It is reasonable to tentatively conclude however that since the patients did recover from the virus, the antibodies played a role in their recovery.
I already responded to this, but see this paper also, from a much more recent study:

http://www.columbia.edu/~jls106/galanti_shaman_ms_supp.pdf

Findings

During the study, 12 individuals tested positive multiple times for the same coronavirus. We found no significant difference between the probability of testing positive at least once and the probability of a recurrence for the beta-coronaviruses HKU1and OC43 at 34 weeks after enrollment/first infection. We also found no significant association between repeat infections and symptom severity but strong association between symptom severity and belonging to the same family.

Interpretation

This study provides evidence that re-infections with the same endemic coronavirus are not atypical in a time window shorter than 1 year and that the genetic basis of innate immune response maybe a greater determinant of infection severity than immune memory acquired after a previous infection.

Now we only have to survive the second wave. Back in 1917 more people died in 2nd wave than in the first.

I guess, open spaces like streets and parks are not the dangerous ones. Real danger are closed spaces, like public transport and offices.

I've been watching Australia more lately, they seemed to have nipped the virus spread fairly well however they are going into Autumn and Winter which they may see a spike in cases coming...Not sure if temperature means a whole lot to this particular virus, time will tell...I agree with you though, a second wave could be extremely deadly, more so than the first wave, like the Spanish flu pandemic over a century ago...

I'm really not believing in the second wave as anything other than the first in a drawn out scenario effected by our altered behaviours and as we lift we spike in the first again. The real second wave comes next flu season they hope and as like other epidemics it will be a lesser version and far easier to deal with.
