Florida posts a record spike in infections for the SECOND day and Texas towns begin imposing curfews as five states see their highest daily rise in cases and the US death toll hits 125,000

The US recorded 45,242 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, the largest single-day increase of the pandemic after the number of infections surged in at least five states including Florida, Georgia, Utah, Tennessee and Idaho. Underscoring the worsening spread of the virus, Florida on Saturday morning reported 9,585 new infections in the last 24 hours, marking a record high for a second day, and 24 additional deaths. The US death toll has surpassed 125,000, the highest in the world, with a total of 2.48million confirmed cases.

Florida and Texas joined the small but growing list of those that are either backtracking or putting any further reopenings of their economies on hold because of a comeback by the virus, mostly in the South and West. Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered bars across to close by mid-day and required restaurants to limit indoor seating capacity to 50 per cent Friday, while Florida state officials told bars to immediately stop serving alcohol on their premises. Cities in Harris and Hidalgo counties in Texas have implemented curfews this week in as they try to contain the virus amid a surge in cases.

I expect stupidity and lying from politicians. It is sad to see people congregating at beaches and bars without any mask protection. Do these people, many of them younger, not care about the consequences? This pandemic is not over or lessened by a long shot.

India's coronavirus cases surge past half a million with another record jump of 18,552 infections and 384 new deaths in 24 hours

India's confirmed coronavirus cases crossed half a million on Saturday with another record 24-hour jump of 18,552 infections. The Health Ministry also reported 384 new deaths, raising the total to 15,685. The country has now seen 508,953 confirmed cases of Covid-19, making it the country with the fourth-highest number of cases after the United States, Brazil and Russia.

The surge prompted authorities in the northeastern state of Assam to impose a two-week lockdown in the state capital of Gauhati. About 700 new cases were reported there in just four days.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the rest of Assam will be placed under a night curfew and weekend lockdowns. He urged people to store essential goods and signaled a tighter lockdown where even grocery stores would be closed.

India's capital - Delhi - home to 25 million people, is the country's worst-hit city. Its hospitals are at a breaking point and authorities reaching deep to confront the crisis, converting some hotels into makeshift coronavirus wards.

'For doctors and nurses it is a part of their lives. For us this is a totally new experience and a very difficult one at that,' said Ritu Yadav, operations manager at the five-star Suryaa, as staff in masks rush to deep clean the building. 'We have got training from the hospital on how to wear the PPE and then take it off but this is something I never thought I would have to do when I chose hospitality as my career.'

Home to some of India's most crowded slums, Delhi has around 75,000 cases so far, but the city government predicts this will soar to half a million by the end of July. With newspapers full of reports about patients being turned away from overflowing hospitals, Delhi told the city's hotels earlier this month they would be roped in to provide hospital care.

Nevada governor makes face masks mandatory as coronavirus cases rise

Nevada governor Steve Sisolak has issued a mandatory face mask order, amid rising coronavirus cases across the US. Mr Sisolak announced that from Friday, Nevada residents will have to wear a face mask in public places, and when they are outside and it is impossible to keep a distance of six feet from other people.

During a press conference on Wednesday the governor told reporters: “This is a state that prides itself on the spirit of individualism.”

Mr Sisolak, who is a Democrat, added: “So I’m asking all of us to take our independent spirit and turn that into our individual responsibility to keep the lights on for businesses throughout our state.”

Restaurants in Nevada have been allowed to reopen at 50 per cent capacity since 9 May and casinos, which are the main attraction for its tourism industry, since 4 June, but the governor warned residents that social distancing measures are still in effect.

“As I said last week, we’re not post Covid. We’re still in the middle of the first phase, the first wave of Covid,” Mr Sisolak said. “So please, I cannot emphasise this enough, wear your face covering anytime you leave your house, when you go to a restaurant, and you stop the pharmacy, when you enter a casino. Wear your face covering.”

People who have a medical condition that prevents them from wearing a face mask, homeless people and children between the ages of two and nine are exempt from the new order, according to Eater Las Vegas.

Businesses have also been advised to implement a “no mask, no service” policy, but staff should ask someone if they have a medical condition that exempts from from wearing a face covering before denying them entry.

The Democratic governor claimed that the order is not a political decision, and told reporters: “I don’t know why protecting our health and our neighbours’ lives became a political, partisan, or even philosophical decision. For me it’s none of those. It’s a medical necessity, a human obligation, and is good for business.”

Mr Sisolak added: “Wearing face coverings save lives, period, and end of story.”

The governor’s order comes amid rising coronavirus across the US, with states including Florida, Texas and California recently announcing record daily highs.

Last week, in reaction to the rise in cases in Nevada, where the state has seen a four week upward trend in new daily cases, Mr Sisolak announced that he would be extending Phase Two of the state’s lockdown easing measures until the end of the month.

Under Phase Two measures, certain businesses such as nightclubs are still not allowed to open, and the governor has asked residents to continue following social distancing measures, so that the state can move forward and not go back into lockdown.

CDC adds nausea, diarrhea and congestion to list of common coronavirus symptoms
  • In the pandemic's earliest days, the CDC listed just three coronavirus symptoms: fever, cough and shortness of breath
  • Now, that list has grown to 12 symptoms with the recent addition of three
  • Diarrhea, nausea and congestion or runny nose were added, though it's not completely clear when
  • About a third of patients - especially young ones - may have GI symptoms of COVID-19
  • Approximately half of all new cases in the US are now being diagnosed in younger people

Houston is approaching ICU capacity while LA is nearing a 'critical moment' amid COVID-19 spike as experts warn rural counties in Arkansas and Missouri have seen patients double in a week and US virus cases pass 2.5 MILLION

A staggering 2,507,874 infections have been recorded in America, making up a quarter of the world's almost 10 million cases. The US recorded more than 45,000 new infections Saturday, setting a dismal new daily record for confirmed cases since the outbreak started. Some Mississippi ICUs are now full of COVID-19 patients. Houston ICUs are edging closer to reaching capacity and officials sent an emergency alert to residents bumping up the threat level to 'severe'. LA is said to be approaching a 'critical moment' for the pandemic and officials warned reopening could be put on hold. Experts are warning that rural counties could also be hard hit, after small communities in Arkansas and Missouri have seen their cases double in a week.

Only two US states are reporting a decline in new coronavirus cases

(excerpts)

Where new cases are on the rise

Only two US states are reporting a decline in new coronavirus cases compared to last week: Connecticut and Rhode Island.

The 36 states reporting a rise in cases are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Cases are tracking steady in Delaware, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Hampshire New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota and Virginia.

Record numbers may underestimate cases

This all came as the United States broke another record, reporting the highest number of new cases in a single day Friday with at least 40,173 new infections.

The daunting numbers could be "a tip of the iceberg," Frieden said. A CDC survey suggests the total number of coronavirus infections across the US could actually be six to 24 times greater than reported.

As cases spike, US travelers are "unlikely" to be allowed into the European Union as the bloc begins opening up to international travel, several EU diplomats told CNN.

Officials in parts of the US are now trying to reel in the spread of the virus -- which many experts have said is spiraling out of control -- by making pleas to the country's young population to keep their distance, urging the use of face masks and halting their reopening plans. The US has now hit almost 2.54 million infections and at least 125,747 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The bulk outcome statistics (recovered vs. dead) are not a good way of determining the case fatality rate in a country. Most countries report recoveries sporadically, if at all. There may also be political pressures for reporting recoveries in a country like Brazil.

You're probably right, I would think that this pandemic would be more of an exception and there would be more accurate reporting however other interests could hamper such accuracy, political or social interests maybe...
There may also be political pressures for reporting recoveries in a country like Brazil.

Also political pressures for reporting accurate death counts such as what we have seen China allegedly do, under report deaths, I think many countries have done this...I believe New York also under reported coronavirus deaths in their State when they were going through a huge spike in deaths not long ago...

...

Well, to be fair, I don't think any government in the world has done this.
In my estimation, that's empirical proof that all governments everywhere are totally ineffectual and incompetent, and the charade of leadership and effectual governance has been decisively exposed.

3M was selling the paper N95 respirators that everyone needs, for about $1/each, before the pandemic. So we should be able to produce the 328 million N95 respirators required to protect our citizens...and thereby return to a functioning economy again, for $328 million, and still provide a profit incentive for corporations like 3M to do so, directed under the Defense Authorization Act. Instead, Congress has spent over $2 trillion to bail out businesses that wouldn't need to be bailed out if we spent just $328 million per week (or even per month) on making paper respirators.

That's insane. Instead of solving the problem, our politicians just bankrupted the country in order to give trillions of taxpayer dollars to their campaign-donor buddies, in what appears to be the largest act of political/corporate kleptocracy in the history of human civilization.

Unfortunately I think this may go on for years, its completely out of control in the US in my opinion and there is no plan countrywide to stop this pandemic...Our governments have failed but even the many public citizens have failed, so many are arguing the necessity of wearing face masks and using hand sanitizer in public...Florida is already posting close to 10,000 new cases today, its only 14:22 est...

Which brings me back to a question I've been asking, and so far no good answer:

What actually stopped the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 ???

Whenever I look it up I get answers like 'it just ran its course' or 'infected all susceptible people'.

Another words I've yet to see a good answer - And it may be important because if we knew
what stopped that pandemic - We may be able to figure out a way to stop this one ???

World's dominant strain of coronavirus 'is 10 TIMES more infectious than the one that jumped to humans in China' because it mutated so its vital spike protein doesn't snap as often in the body, scientists say

A mutated version of the coronavirus that has gripped Europe and the West is more infectious because it doesn't break as often while inside the body, a study has found. Researchers at The Scripps Research Institute in Florida say the 'spike protein' that the virus uses to attach to cells in the airways has adapted since January. It used to break off regularly while trying to bind to receptors in people's airways, which it would use to gain entry to the body, but is now more resilient, they say.

A genetic mutation which scientists around the world have been picking up on for months appears to have caused this spike to be less likely to snap, and also to force the coronaviruses to produce more of them to make itself more infectious.

As a result the virus appears to be approximately 10 times more infectious than it was when it first jumped to humans in China at the end of the year, scientists say. The mutated version of the virus, dubbed G614 - a change from D614 - is a tiny change in its genetic make-up that scientists weren't sure what to make of when they found it.

But by May research had found it had become the dominant strain being found in Covid-19 patients across the UK, US, Canada and Italy.

Lead researcher on the Scripps institute's study, Dr Hyeryun Choe, told the Washington Post the mutation seemed to have happened to 'compensate' for the weakness of the spike protein in the past. The Post reported it appeared to have become approximately 10 times more infectious as a result of this change.

More than 200 members of a West Virginia Planet Fitness are urged to quarantine immediately after one patron tested positive for COVID-19 days after working out at the facility

More than two hundred gym members of a West Virginia Planet Fitness are being urged to quarantine after one client tested positive for coronavirus late last week. Officials said the person attended the gym on Fort Pierpont Road, in Morgantown, on Wednesday, June 24, just days before the positive COVID-19 result was returned.

Anyone who was at the Planet Fitness branch from between 9am to 3pm that day has been asked by the Monongalia County Health Department to quarantine themselves at home immediately and monitor any symptoms over the next two weeks.

Health officials estimated that as many as 205 people were in the gym during that time and may have subsequently been exposed to the virus. The individuals in question have been ordered not to leave their homes until at least July 8, unless it’s to seek medical care.
