Minneapolis neighborhood that vowed not to call police in wake of Floyd death is already being tested by 300-strong homeless encampment

A progressive Minneapolis neighborhood that pledged not to call the police in the wake of the death of George Floyd is now dealing with a 300-strong homeless encampment in a local park, according to reports.

Traffic has reportedly increased in the neighborhood around Powderhorn Park, as drug dealers seek to meet their clientele displaced during the civil unrest, rioting and looting following Floyd’s death at the end of May. At least one person overdosed inside the park and was brought out by an ambulance. Prostitution has also been reported in the area.

Latest Seattle CHOP shooting kills 16-year-old boy, critically wounds 14-year-old boy

A 16-year-old boy has died and a 14-year-old boy has been hospitalized in critical condition Monday following the latest shooting at the Seattle area known as the Capitol Hill Organized Protest, or CHOP, police revealed.

Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best said it marked the second death of an African-American victim in the area. The first death associated with the CHOP came June 20 when 19-year-old Horace Lorenzo Anderson was shot and killed.

Monday marked the fourth shooting linked to the CHOP zone.

"It's very unfortunate that we have another murder in this area identified as the CHOP," Best said Monday. She elaborated that they were African-American victims "at a place where they claim to be working for Black Lives Matter but they're gone. They're dead now. And, we've had multiple other incidents -- assaults, rapes, robbery, shootings -- so this is something that's going to need to change."

Officials initially said the victims of the latest shooting were "men" before clarifying their ages.

Trump vows to track down and jail for ten years two masked 'anarchists' filmed throwing red paint on NYC's George Washington statue in Washington Square Park - as police union say de Blasio is 'surrendering the city to lawless'

New York City's famous George Washington Monument in Washington Square Park was defaced with red paint on Monday as protesters gathered further downtown outside City Hall ahead of a controversial vote that could slash the city's police budget by $1billion - 16 percent of its total - despite escalating crime and chaos. In the latest symbol of police defiance and unruliness across the city, the vandals tossed red paint at the famous George Washington monument on Monday then fled the scene, leaving city workers to try to power wash it off.

President Trump tweeted on Tuesday: 'We are tracking down the two Anarchists who threw paint on the magnificent George Washington Statue in Manhattan. We have them on tape. They will be prosecuted and face 10 years in Prison based on the Monuments and Statues Act. Turn yourselves in now!' At City Hall, protesters who have set up an Occupy City Hall camp clashed with police on Tuesday morning.

The protesters have been there now for a week and are refusing to leave until the NYPD budget is cut by at least $1billion - something that is likely to happen on Tuesday. Mayor Bill de Blasio has reached an agreement with the city council that divests $1billion from the NYPD and cancels the hiring of 1,163 cops. Some Democrats say it is a step in the right direction and that the police force - like others across the country - needs to be stripped of its power and resources to combat systemic racism and excessive use of force.

Media narrative of peaceful Seattle CHOP zone turned upside down as mayor sends in police to stop violence

As protesters and armed anarchists seized control last month of a swath of Seattle's downtown that includes a police station, dubbing it Capitol Hill Organized Protest, the local and mainstream media largely echoed elected leaders by insisting it was a peaceful protest – until people started getting killed.

The spin by the Seattle Times and national outlets that covered it belied the violent and dangerous origin of the area that began on June 8, when Seattle police abandoned their own station and allowed self-described anarchists to create a "police-free" zone. On Wednesday, police went back in and finished clearing out the area, after multiple shootings, an alleged rape and at least two murders.

“CHOP violently seized six blocks of downtown Seattle, guarded the area they stole with semi-automatic rifles and appointed a leader who called himself a warlord and the media spun it as a fun time with ‘free snacks,’” Washington Times columnist Tim Young told Fox News.

“That's as insane as saying Boko Haram was just trying to start a dating service when they kidnapped nearly 300 women in Nigeria a few years ago,” Young added. “And those liberal outlets probably still can't figure out why people call them fake news.”

Since it was established, there have been at least four shootings, two of which left a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old dead in separate incidents. Seattle police made more than a dozen arrests after Mayor Jenny Durkan declared the gathering an unlawful assembly – a far cry from how it was originally portrayed by the media and by Durkan herself.

The mayor responded to criticism of her leadership by President Trump by tweeting that he should not be "so afraid of democracy."

“The CHOP has become lawless and brutal,” Police Chief Carmen Best said Wednesday in a written statement. “Four shootings – two fatal – robberies, assaults, violence and countless property crimes have occurred in this several block area.”

The Seattle Times was perhaps the most egregious when it came to celebrating the cop-free area. The paper boasted about free snacks and pleasant smells inside the zone, called CHAZ at the time, on June 1.

Liberal writers, activists sign open letter calling to end 'cancel culture'

Liberal writers, professors and activists have come together and signed an open letter in the hopes of ending "cancel culture."

"Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, New York Times opinion editor Bari Weiss and political activist Noam Chomsky are a few of more than 100 names attached to the piece titled "A Letter on Justice and Open Debate" that was published Tuesday in Harper's Magazine.

"Our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial," the letter begins. "Powerful protests for racial and social justice are leading to overdue demands for police reform, along with wider calls for greater equality and inclusion across our society, not least in higher education, journalism, philanthropy, and the arts."

"But this needed reckoning has also intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments that tend to weaken our norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favor of ideological conformity. As we applaud the first development, we also raise our voices against the second."

While the letter calls President Trump a "real threat to democracy," it also warns that the resistance should not "harden into its own brand of dogma or coercion," insisting that an "intolerant climate" has plagued both sides of the aisle.

"The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted," the letter explains. "While we have come to expect this on the radical right, censoriousness is also spreading more widely in our culture: an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty. We uphold the value of robust and even caustic counter-speech from all quarters. But it is now all too common to hear calls for swift and severe retribution in response to perceived transgressions of speech and thought."

"More troubling still, institutional leaders, in a spirit of panicked damage control, are delivering hasty and disproportionate punishments instead of considered reforms. [...] We are already paying the price in greater risk aversion among writers, artists, and journalists who fear for their livelihoods if they depart from the consensus, or even lack sufficient zeal in agreement."

The letter goes on to say that the "stifling atmosphere" that restricts public debate "invariably hurts those who lack power and makes everyone less capable of democratic participation."

"We need to preserve the possibility of good-faith disagreement without dire professional consequences," the letter says. "If we won’t defend the very thing on which our work depends, we shouldn’t expect the public or the state to defend it for us."

Other signatures attached to the letter include New York Times columnists David Brooks and Michelle Goldberg, CNN host Fareed Zakaria, The Atlantic writer David Frum, "The Handmaid's Tale" author Margaret Atwood and feminist icon Gloria Steinem.

Rowling has been under fire by the viral mob in recent weeks for defending the concept of biological sex, which critics have deemed transphobic.

Meanwhile, Weiss drew ire among her colleagues after she claimed that a "civil war" has taken place within The New York Times following the uproar sparked after the newspaper published an op-ed written by Sen. Tom Cotton that led to the removal of its editorial page editor James Bennet. It was also reported that during an internal town hall meeting, a Times employee had asked if Weiss was going to be fired over the incident.

I am getting rather fed up with this ongoing spasm of stupidity in Britain over the death of George Floyd in the US. The left in Britain it seems is entirely dependent on the American left for its ideas and it swallows them uncritically as soon as their modish comrades across the pond come up with a new one, or parrots them in their protest at some outrage that occurred over there. Thus we are constantly bombarded with Amerocentric talking points and dubious academic theories as to what is wrong in our society.

The left in this country has a constant preoccupation with the internal affairs of the US, and there seems to be among them either a delusion that they are actually a part of that country, or at least a strong wish that was so. They revel in American societal difficulties, and would be lost without them, or if they faced up to the reality that we are two distinct and separate countries, geographically, culturally, and legally, each with our own histories.

That is an interesting perspective, as over here the left are always accused of taking their orders from Europe!

NYPD Chief of Department and three other cops are beaten bloody by protesters wielding sticks on Brooklyn Bridge - and Bill de Blasio stays silent

At least four officers - including the city's highest ranking uniformed cop, Chief of Department Terence Monahan - were hurt and 37 demonstrators were arrested, police said. In footage of the incident tweeted by the NYPD Wednesday, a protester is seen swinging a long object down at the heads of a group of officers from a pedestrian walkway as they attempt to arrest someone on the other side of a fence at 10am. Police photos of the aftermath showed a lieutenant with a bloodied face, a detective holding a bandage to his head, and a bicycle officer helping a fellow officer dress a head wound. Their injuries are said to be serious. Monahan meanwhile, who is seen the video dressed in a white shirt, suffered a fractured his finger in the scuffle and other minor injuries, officials said.

In some of these places, I am wondering if the police have built up a long simmering pot of grudges within the populace which is starting to boil over. This is the same agency that used to practice "stop and frisk", random searches on people for drugs and weapons for merely showing their faces in public. Don't get me wrong, I don't condone violence against anyone at any time. This stuff just doesn't happen in a vacuum, and NYPD has a long history of bad behavior.

We're on the same page.

I had been thinking monitor lizards but they're too slow. Best to keep them roaming the perimeter at night - that's what they're good at.

Caught part of Chisum on TV recently and a good cattle stampede through town might be the way to go. There would probably be less cleanup than CHAZ or CHOP or whatever, and just like a virus two thousand pounds of stupid angry beef-on-the-hoof doesn't care what color you are, age, politics, any of that.

I understand the need to hold certain professions to a higher standard and absolutely there needs to be discussion about how to do that. Discussion, not media frenzy. Not beer summit.

Defund the police. Oh yeah. Great idea. Cut off your nose to spite your face. Throw the baby out with the bath water.

Have a look at the story and the video. Tell me your as****e wouldn't be puckered if you had to confront this intimidating lunatic. I'm surprised she gave him that much latitude and that she fired a single shot. Lots of bystanders. She didn't shoot him in the back multiple times as he ran away, or as he sat on his couch eating ice cream. Let's just be careful we don't fling s**t on officers like this one when we have our national debate.
