Conspiracy theorists are claiming that the truth about singer Avril Lavigne is much more 'complicated' than meets they eye.
According to some fans, the Canadian entertainer died several years ago, and a body-double has been living and singing in her place.
Lavigne, 32, is not actually dead - but that hasn't kept theorists from analyzing her career for signs that she passed away shortly after the release of her debut album in 2002, and that a lookalike named Melissa Vandella has been living as the 'Sk8er Boi' singer ever since.
The rumors originally began swirling on a Brazilian fan site in 2015. One user posted claiming that the pressures of stardom, combined with the death of her grandfather, drove Lavigne to take her own life early in her career.
Following her death, Lavigne was allegedly replaced by a 'New Avril', an actress named Melissa Vandella hired by her management to served as a decoy.
Conspirators cite the notable difference in Avril's public image and musical style following the release of her second album in 2004. Specifically, the singer began dressing more feminine and her music transitioned from rock to a more upbeat blend of pop.
As the theory expanded, other Sk8er Boi truthers began citing evidence found in pictures of Lavigne over the years - claiming that the location of her birthmarks, tattoos, and moles are inconsistent, and that her nose shape and jawline have altered over time.
