Bright stars fading out

As Above So Below
A few days ago my neighbor was out on his back deck and waved for me to come over to him...I approached and we talked a bit about this and that, then he brought up the subject of star gazing...He said he was out around 10 pm this past Monday and Tuesday night enjoying the cooler weather and watching the stars when he said in the West sky he saw a bright star just flicker out completely...

He said it was a brighter star and after a few minutes of looking at the skies he looked back towards the West and the star brightness went out, darkened and did not return...The next night he said the same thing happened towards the North, a brighter star as he watched it dimmed out and did not return, it flickered out...

Well last night I was outside with my dog around 11pm letting him out for the last time before going to bed, I was standing out in my backyard looking at the western stars and right in front of my view a brighter star flickered out, went off and did not return...

Where I live is in the country and do not have light pollution from the ground so the stars are bright and you can see so much of the night sky compared to the city...I have never witnessed this before, but my first thought was it could have been a meteor entering the atmosphere and burned up, but it must have been facing towards me because that object was 'hanging' in position like a star, not moving at all and that's how my neighbor described it...

Any thoughts?...

I saw the same thing the other day although I don't know if they are related. My only logical conclusion is that if was the ISS which looks like a really bright star that fades out.

I've seen the space station at night, the star I witnessed flickering out was brother than the operating lights of the station in my opinion...We may have been seeing a similar event since we both live on the east coast near the same regional area...

I'm going to watch for this again tonight and over the weekend...

It sounds like a fake sky. There were people on AH that claimed they would constantly see moving stars.

The star-like light I saw go out was visible for a few minutes then it just faded out completely...

It is very possible. I will keep my eye out as well. Would be interesting if we both witnessed the same object.

Many times those bright lights that fade out are aircraft landing lights that briefly are pointed at a person while the aircraft is altering course or altitude. I have seen this.
The mystery, is when you see this directly over head, or near so.
This I have seen several times.
The light rapidly fades out the very second it catches my attention.

I just saw this again tonight, about 15 minutes ago, walked outside with my dog to let him do his business and standing on my deck star gazing for a few minutes with a clear night, a star-like light went out, it had a medium brightness, I was facing Southwest and to my left about 45 degrees up it went out...It wasn't blinking or anything, it was lit and just went out...

For what its worth I seen a bright star wink out while I was watching it . I didn't fade it was just not there anymore. Maybe that really slim chance observance where the very last light of a dying star reaches here and then nothing , just blackness where it was. Or then maybe its as Toroid said its a Fake Sky and what you see is a glitch like a pixelated wall in your dreams.

That's the same way I saw it happen twice now, they just went out, no fading away, its like they were switched off, it switched to dark where the star was...

I've witnessed this a couple of times, not really where I live as much but out in areas with less population. I know people on AH used to report seeing similar things too. This thread dates back to 2009:

I just seen a star disappear? - Astronomy and Space

I also found this...

Disappearing stars could be signs of advanced alien life

You said you live out in the country? You have a prime location to keep an eye out :)

A quote from your second link, the article is a good read...

Any celestial phenomenon that defies all natural explanation could potentially be evidence of intelligent technology at work. A healthy star that disappeared suddenly and completely from the night sky would certainly qualify.

Its coming up to 2018 & it seems people still do not know about satellites:(

Or at least consider the possibility

Fascinating

This would line up with what @Toroid mentioned about Fake Sky scenarios for sure. I need to go back and read through the entire thing now :p

Satellites move and their appearance is moving, stars also move but their appearance is stationary...:wink3:

what? are you drunk?;)

Well if someone sees the stars moving about like orbiting satellites after a couple minutes of viewing them or even sees them moving about after gazing at them for a couple minutes might be drunk...

Know all about satellites and what they look like in the night sky when spotted.
What I saw was NOT a satellite and I would gamble my life on that.
I could also say...Its coming up to 2018 & it seems people still do not know that some people do know about satellites:sad8:

Fascinating.
