The issue right is that with the current radar technology, the environment often interrupts signals. With the new technology, that will be much less of an issue.

The removal of the background noise has been dubbed quantum illumination.

The method works at extremely low power levels — so low that it can be powered by a battery — and it is resistant to electronic jamming.

“This can give us a real advantage when it comes to stealth aircraft,” said Baugh.

The team’s goal will be to develop “quantum light.” Right now, there is a plan to build a light emitting diode that can produce 1000 times more photons than what is currently available. That will be the key behind the project.
