Canadian wildfire smoke

kaf kaf kaf .....

This is no joke. We're about 60 miles north of Manhattan and the smoke is blotting out the sun. Very dark out there, you can literally see the smoke just hanging there low, smells like camping (minus all the drinking and food).

We have it all the way here in North Carolina too, not as bad as you folks in New York, but our air quality is in the red with warnings...There's a orange haze in my area of NC, I first noticed that yesterday afternoon, it's much worse today...

Mighty weird out there under a blood red moon. I just threw rocks and howled a little. Should I sacrifice something to it?

Going to be worse today in my area, I smelled it stronger in the air this morning whilst commuting to work...

On May 19, 1780, in an event known as Dark Day, New England was cast into blackness as a result of Ontario wildfires mixed with unfavorable atmospheric conditions. Such was the lack of light, candles were needed in the day to provide illumination. Parts of New Hampshire were covered in ash 6" deep.

I can remember it looking like that after Mount St Helens erupted.

Please turn it off now, thank you.

I went over a 1.5 mile span over the Hudson River today and the visibility went from miles and miles to feet and a few more feet .... not too many..... The smoke literally fills the valley and is worse over the river. Like a thick fog. Automatic headlights on cars are enough because it's dark enough.

We have had poor air quality lately because of the Canadian fires too, nothing like what you all are experiencing but around North Carolina and where we are currently in Tennessee, there's a considerable haze in the air...

Holy Smokes BATMAN!!

Yeah, Central Wisconsin here is bad also.
Over 20 million acres burned so far. Worst there in recorded history, but I am quite sure there were times before where it burned 10 times that amount. With no firefighters back then it would just keep burning until it ran out or nature put it out.

I just took the dog out back at the very first blush of dawn and it looks downright supernatural with all that smoke swirling through the trees. Make me wonder about witches and werewolves. More realistically there's a bear in the neighborhood we're all sort of keeping an eye out for.

Are the actual fires over or do new ones keep igniting?

How long will Canada burn? Smoke will continue to choke NYC and the east coast throughout summer as 281 fires burn 'out of control'

Canadian fires continue to burn and will send smoke over New York City and the east coast throughout the summer - as experts warn firefighting operations could last until September.

Canada is experiencing its worst fire season on record with firefighters coming in from all over the nation to help.

As of Sunday afternoon, there were more than 568 fires active across Canada - 281 of which are classified as 'out of control', the Canadian Agency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) reported.

David Roth, a forecaster with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Prediction Center told MSN that Americans will remain at risk of more smoke filled days ahead until the fires are 'fully out,' with those feeling it more who are closer to the border.

Meanwhile Karine Pelletier of SOPFEU, Quebec’s forest-firefighting agency, told CBS New York that barring many heavy periods of rainfall, the agency expects firefighting operations to last until September.

Here are two photos of Canadian smoke in Harrisburg PA. One is looking at the Capitol building from the Susquehanna River. The other is a boat on the river. My wife and I travelled across the river on Friday. Normally you can look downriver and see the Harrisburg Airport and the cooling towers from Three Mile Island but they couldn’t be seen that day.

We have awful haze and smog today from the Canadian fires, this is the worst day yet...Blotted out the sun big time, I was going to mow the yard tonight but I think I'll wait for a clearer day to work outside...
