Matt Hancock urges shops to call the POLICE if people refuse to wear face masks despite top officers branding the £100 fines 'IMPOSSIBLE' to enforce - as retailers warn the rules are the 'last nail in the coffin' for business
Health Secretary Matt Hancock sent out the tough message as the decision to make coverings mandatory, which came after weeks of dithering by ministers, descended into chaos and confusion. Businesses called the plan 'utterly ludicrous' and police said it was ridiculous to expect them to hand out £100 fines to everyone who broke the law in England. The arrangements have exposed deep splits within Boris Johnson's own Cabinet, with Michael Gove having taken to TV studios at the weekend to contradict the PM by insisting masks should not be compulsory.
Mr Gove was pictured in a Pret in London this morning not wearing a mask, in contrast to Mr Johnson who has donned his for a series of photo opportunities. Finally confirming the move - which has already come into effect in Scotland - in the House of Commons this afternoon, Mr Hancock said: 'Should an individual without an exemption refuse to wear a face covering, a shop can refuse them entry and can call the police if people refuse to comply.'
