CDC finds no safety issues with J&J vaccine after 'adverse' reactions reported

Federal health officials found no safety issues with the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine after a North Carolina vaccination site was temporarily shut down due to a "limited number of adverse reactions."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analyzed the vaccine lot at the PNC Arena clinic in Wake County after 18 people had reactions during the required post-vaccination monitoring period earlier in the day.

Out of more than 2,300 Johnson & Johnson vaccine shots administered, 14 patients suffered "minor reactions" and were "treated on site," according to county officials. Four others were transported to area hospitals for observation and all but one have already been released.

So if they thought it was the heat/warm weather causing lightheadedness then why did they stop?...I think all of these J&J stoppages are political or corporate play attempting to make J&J look bad...Pfizer and Moderna have had much harsher adverse reactions and no one is stopping their vaccination drives...Its ridiculous to stop over a few people feeling lightheaded...What they also fail to mention is the other sites have restarted giving J&J shots...

Georgia site is fourth in US to pause Johnson & Johnson vaccine

A coronavirus vaccine site in Georgia became the fourth US location this week to pause its administration of the Johnson & Johnson jab after concerns over possible adverse reactions, a report said.

Eight people experienced lightheadedness after getting the shot Wednesday at the Cumming Fairgrounds, though health officials believe that could have simply been caused by the hot weather, WSB-TV reported.

"It was a fainting issue," Dave Palmer, North Georgia Health District spokesperson, told the outlet.

"We don’t think it’s anything to do with the vaccine. It’s probably more environmental factors," Palmer said.

Adverse reactions were incurred by less than 2% of the 435 people who received the vaccine at the site, the report said.

"That facility is hard to cool, and we do have fans there, but it was a warmer day," Palmer told the station. "I think the heat may have had some bearing on it. We’re not sure."

The European Union is being ridiculous in my opinion, now they are investigating Johnson & Johnson for blood clot links?...I think these are attempts to diminish and tarnish the vaccine competition, I've read of some very serious reactions to the Pfizer vaccine, where's the alarm bells and investigations?...Same with Moderna, where's the investigations?...Seems the targets are AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson...

I agree, corporate lies, a way to make people avoid the J&J even though side effects tend to be the same as the others as far as I can tell. My grandson got the J&J vaccine and he was feverish for a day. His step mother and dad got Pfizer vaccine and she slept for two days and he was manically cleaning the whole house for two days. I think the step-mother's mother also was hyper for 2 days. My daughter got the pfizer (got the second shot last week) and had no effects. Her friend got the Moderna (scheduled for the second shot this week) and had no effect. Part of the side effects could be psychological and part just how your body reacts to things. My daughter's co-worker got the J&J vaccine and had no side effects.

Chinese officials scramble to deal with revelation that their vaccines might not be effective

China's coronavirus vaccines may not provide the appropriate protection, with the government exploring options to try and boost efficacy as additional vaccines enter clinical trials.

In a rare admission from a normally tight-lipped government, Chinese health officials admitted that the vaccines "don't have very high protective rates."

"It's now under formal consideration whether we should use different vaccines from different technical lines for the immunization process," China Centers for Disease Control director Gao Fu said at a conference Saturday.

Drug companies Sinopharm and Sinovac were the leading producers for China's vaccine efforts, with their products exported to 22 countries including Mexico, Turkey, Indonesia, Brazil and Turkey.

Sinopharm initially reported a 79% efficacy rate, but did not release any trial data for the vaccines. Meanwhile, foreign trials for the Sinovac vaccine have found a wide range of efficacy, with Brazil reporting 50% efficacy for and Turkey reporting over 80% efficacy, the Washington Post reported.

Sinovac spokesperson Liu Peicheng acknowledged varying levels of effectiveness in the company's vaccine, but claimed a number of factors could result in that variation, including the age of people in a study or the virus strain, among other factors.

China is therefore exploring a number of options to boost efficacy and better protect its citizens. One option would see alterations to the dosage regimen, either through increasing the number of doses or increasing the interval between doses to boost effectiveness. The second option would attempt to mix vaccines, which China currently does not recommend, the South China Morning Post reported.

Countries are running clinical trials to see if mixing vaccines proves safe and yields any increased protection. Britain is currently exploring the possibility of mixing its AstraZeneca vaccine with the Pfizer vaccine.

Gao suggested that China explore using mRNA vaccines, which are used by American and European companies but not by China – so far.

Another CDC official said that mRNA vaccines have entered the clinical trial phase, but provided no timeline otherwise.

Health experts say the Chinese vaccines are unlikely to be sold to the United States or Western Europe due to the complexity of the approval process.

'China, Iran, and Russia are laughing at us': US Navy is slammed for adding a mask to the eagle in service branch logo

The change to the Navy logo was spotted by Twitter users on Friday, drawing mockery and accusations that the nation's adversaries would be 'laughing' at the update. The logo, a stylized version of the unofficial Navy emblem that dates back to the 1970s, shows an eagle holding an anchor in its talons. The updated version depicts a blue mask covering the eagle's beak. 'Why desecrate the US Navy logo with a mask? It's a blatant show of weakness. China is laughing..' one Twitter user wrote.

Burbank puts FENCE around restaurant to stop anti-lockdown owner from serving customers after $50,000 in COVID fines and three arrests failed to stop him

The city of Burbank put a chain-link fence (left) around a restaurant whose owners have repeatedly refused county orders to shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. Photos circulating on social media show the fence after it was erected along the perimeter of the Tinhorn Flats Saloon & Grill on Magnolia Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California. Last week, the restaurant co-owner was arrested for a third time after he removed sandbags that the city put in place at the entrance to prevent its reopening.

Lucas Lepejian (right), 20, the son of restaurant owner Baret Lepejian, was taken into custody on Tuesday just days after city crews were seen boarding up the eatery. This was the third time in six days that Lepejian was detained. Lepejian was immediately released with a citation and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date, the Burbank Police Department said. The restaurant has amassed about $50,000 in fines due to its owners repeatedly defying COVID-19 lockdown orders. Lepejian has vowed not to pay the fines.

Some news outlets are still running the same news stories from last week as if those vaccination clinics were still closed when they are not closed and continuing to vaccinate using Johnson & Johnson, very dishonest IMO...

FDA halts use of Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine due to blood-clotting in six women

The FDA is asking states to temporarily halt Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine after six U.S. woman developed a blood-clotting disorder, saying the recommendation comes “out of an abundance of caution,” reports CNBC.

All six cases occurred in women ages 18 to 48, with symptoms developing six to 13 days after they received the vaccine.

“Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare,” the FDA claimed in a joint statement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “COVID-19 vaccine safety is a top priority for the federal government, and we take all reports of health problems following COVID-19 vaccination very seriously.”

A Johnson & Johnson statement tried to claim “no clear causal relationship” between the blood clots and the vaccine.

Johnson & Johnson vaccine pause outrages media across the spectrum: 'This is a moronic step'

Media members across the political spectrum have come together in agreement to bash the decision by the FDA and CDC to recommend a pause in the rollout of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine after six instances of severe blood clots in recipients.

"6 cases. Not 6,000 cases. Not 600 cases. Not 60 cases. 6 cases out of more than 4 million shots delivered. Our public health experts continue to fail us," conservative Marc Thiessen wrote.

FiveThirtyEight founder Nate Silver called the decision "a disaster" that is "going to get people killed" and create more vaccine hesitancy. Media Research Center vice president Dan Gainor quoted Silver’s tweet, adding "I can't disagree with this."

Keith Olbermann, who has proven to be too liberal even for ESPN, had a similar take.

"You would think that of all people the FDA would know about the impossibility of putting the toothpaste back into the tube. This is a moronic step based on six cases. Moronic," Olbermann wrote in perhaps the first time he was on the same page as conservatives such as Theissen and Gainor.

Left-wing former Lincoln Project adviser Kurt Bardella also agreed, "This will fuel anti-vaxxers’ insanity and reinforce vaccination hesitancy. Now even more people will have license to delay getting vaccinated thereby enabling the ongoing spread of this virus and it’s variants."

Many other media members from left, right, and center took to Twitter to pan the decision.

Trump accuses Biden of 'conspiring with Pfizer' to pause J&J shots for 'political reasons' and says the vaccine's reputation is 'permanently challenged'

Donald Trump lashed out at Joe Biden by claiming his administration is conspiring with Pfizer and claims distribution of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine was paused - after it led to rare clotting issues - as a political ploy. 'The people who have already taken the vaccine will be up in arms, and perhaps all of this was done for politics or perhaps it's the FDA's love for Pfizer,' he wrote in an email statement on Tuesday. The Food and Drug Administration recommended Tuesday that states pause distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after receiving reports that six people experienced rare blood clots. At this point, more than 6.8 million one-dose vaccines have been injected.

Brazil's P1 coronavirus variant mutating, may become more dangerous -study

Brazil's P1 coronavirus variant, behind a deadly COVID-19 surge in the Latin American country that has raised international alarm, is mutating in ways that could make it better able to evade antibodies, according to scientists studying the virus.

Research conducted by the public health institute Fiocruz into the variants circulating in Brazil found mutations in the spike region of the virus that is used to enter and infect cells.

Those changes, the scientists said, could make the virus more resistant to vaccines - which target the spike protein - with potentially grave implications for the severity of the outbreak in Latin America's most populous nation.

"We believe it's another escape mechanism the virus is creating to evade the response of antibodies," said Felipe Naveca, one of the authors of the study and part of Fiocruz in the Amazon city of Manaus, where the P1 variant is believed to have originated.

Naveca said the changes appeared to be similar to the mutations seen in the even more aggressive South African variant, against which studies have shown some vaccines have substantially reduced efficacy.

"This is particularly worrying because the virus is continuing to accelerate in its evolution," he added.

Studies have shown the P1 variant to be as much as 2.5 times more contagious than the original coronavirus and more resistant to antibodies.

On Tuesday, France suspended all flights to and from Brazil in a bid to prevent the variant's spread as Latin America's largest economy becomes increasingly isolated.

The variant, which has quickly become dominant in Brazil, is thought to be a large factor behind a massive second wave that has brought the country's death toll to over 350,000 - the second highest in the world behind the United States.

Brazil's outbreak is also increasingly affecting younger people, with hospital data showing that in March more than half of all patients in intensive care were aged 40 or younger. For Ester Sabino, a scientist at the faculty of medicine of the University of Sao Paulo who led the first genome sequencing of the coronavirus in Brazil, the mutations of the P1 variant are not surprising given the fast pace of transmission.

"If you have a high level of transmission, like you have in Brazil at the moment, your risk of new mutations and variants increases," she said.

Fiocruz researchers including Naveca also recently described a novel variant descended from a different lineage to P1, and detected in the northeast of the country, that carried 14 defning mutations including the E484K change first noted in the South African variant (Identification of a new B.1.1.33 SARS-CoV-2 Variant of Interest (VOI) circulating in Brazil with mutation E484K and multiple deletions in the amino (N)-terminal domain of the Spike protein).

So far vaccines, such as those developed by AstraZeneca and China's Sinovac, have proven effective against the P1 Brazilian variant but Sabino said further mutations could put that at risk. "It's a real possibility," she said.

Australia, largely free of COVID-19, in no hurry to reopen borders

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Australia is no hurry to reopen its international borders and risk the country's nearly coronavirus-free lifestyle, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Sunday.

Australia closed its borders to all non-citizens and non-residents in March 2020 and has been permitting only limited international arrivals in recent months, mainly its citizens returning from abroad.

The border closure, together with snap lockdowns, swift contact tracking and high community compliance with health measures, have made Australia one of the world's most successful countries in curbing the pandemic, limiting coronavirus cases to under 29,500 infections and 910 deaths.

"Australia is in no hurry to open those borders, I assure you," Morrison said at a televised briefing.

"I will not be putting at risk the way we are living in this country which is so different to the rest of the world today."

For months now, except for some short snap lockdowns, Australians have been able to dine out, gather nearly freely and stop wearing face masks in most places.

They exchanged their international forays for local trips, with government figures showing big annual increases in intra-state travel in the first months of 2021.

From Monday, Australians and neighbouring New Zealanders will be able to travel between both countries without the need to apply for an exemption or spend time in mandatory quarantine.

New Zealand has had only 2,239 confirmed coronavirus cases and 26 related deaths.

Morrison flagged on Sunday that vaccinated Australians could be able travel overseas "for essential purposes" and return via home quarantine in the second half of the year, but that possibility is only in "planning stages".

Australia recently abandoned a goal to vaccinate nearly all of its 26 million population by the end of 2021 following advice that people under the age of 50 take Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine rather than AstraZeneca's shot.

Otters at Georgia Aquarium test positive for Covid-19

Otters at an aquarium in Atlanta have tested positive for Covid-19 but are expected to make full recoveries.

"They began exhibiting mild respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, runny noses, mild lethargy, and some began coughing," the Georgia Aquarium said in a statement.

The aquarium said the Asian small-clawed otters are doing well.

"Despite following all recommended health and safety protocols, it is suspected the otters may have acquired the infection from an asymptomatic staff member," the aquarium said in the statement, which was posted to Facebook.

Such transmission is rare, and the otters are off exhibit while they recover. The animals do not have direct contact with patrons.

The aquarium did not say how many otters tested positive. Animals, including otters, are not eligible for the Covid-19 vaccines.
